YMTS (Youth Music Theatre Scotland) Fife Projects

YMTS (Youth Music Theatre Scotland) are now based here in Fife and work with Fife Cultural Trust delivering music theatre for young people through the ON creative programme throughout Fife.  We have weekly classes leading to Trinity Guildhall exams and holiday production projects in every school break –  the most expensive in 2013 was £180 for a 3 week production project of Phantom of the Opera(Scottish Youth Premier) last summer.  We are completely open access with no audition to join – we cast from within the course participants. Our practitioner base is drawn from local, national and international teaching artists.

We will have a full ON Fest summer programme for 2014 available from mid February, and our opportunities for young people in Fife to take part in the Fringe soon after.  Applications open now for our Easter ‘HONK!’ and ‘Into the Woods’ projects at Adam Smith Theatre.

Millennium Youth Camp 2014

Applications for the fifth international Millennium Youth Camp have begun.

The 2014 Millennium Youth Camp will be held during 3–11 June 2014 in the Greater Helsinki area in Finland. The one week camp takes place in Finland every summer and is organised by the Technology Academy Finland, the Finnish Science Education Centre LUMA (University of Helsinki) and Aalto University.

The camp offers young people from across Europe, aged between 16-19, who are interested in mathematics, the natural sciences and technology, an opportunity to learn more about Finnish expertise and top level research in these areas.  It’s also a great opportunity to meet other young people who share similar interests.

The Big Strum!

Fife Council Youth Music Initiative is currently running a pilot project using the ukulele to teach singing and musicianship skills to primary teachers and their pupils.

The project, involving over 60 teachers from 35 primary schools, is being led by Ann Rae, primary music specialist and ukulele enthusiast who has led twilights for participating staff throughout the session.

To celebrate all that has been achieved by children and their teachers during the year, all schools involved in the project are being invited to attend one of three “Big Strums” – held during the day on Monday 17th June, in the Rothes Halls, Glenrothes. Children will enjoy a packed hour of singing and playing, supported by their teachers.

Each of the three Big Strum sessions will accommodate just under 600 young ukulele players at a time – surely a first for Fife, if not Scotland! – with support by Fife Youth Music Initiative through transport subsidies for schools.

Adding to the excitement will be a multi-media presentation including use of cameras relaying live pictures to a large screen, in partnership with the Creative Industries Department from Adam Smith College.

Pictured, are young ukulele players from Denend Primary School who are all looking forward to the event!
