Linking education and employment outcomes

We are delighted to confirm that Andy Creamer, Deputy Head Teacher from Menzieshill High School, will be presenting at Learning through Technology 2014. Andy will speak about the LEEO project on Linking Education and Employment Outcomes; discussing the work students have undertaken with partner schools in Florida and ongoing collaboration with industry and employer mentors.

Learning Through Technology 2014 will be an unmissable event for all of Scotland’s lecturers. Now in its third year, LTT is a unique opportunity to explore the effective use of technology to enhance the learning experience and examine ongoing developments in policy, resource and practice.

Technology is a vital education resource with the potential to increase engagement, widen participation and inspire creativity in the classroom. You will explore how it can be used to best effect with examples of innovative practice from an impressive array of leading thinkers and practitioners. The event will also present am ideal forum for knowledge exchange and networking with educators from across Scotland.

Refugee Week Scotland 2014

Community Celebrations Grant Application
Deadline: 3^rd March – 5pm

At the Scottish Refugee Council we have been busy organising a very exciting programme for Refugee Week Scotland 2014! It will run from 16^th – 22^nd June in venues across the country, and we’d love for as many organisations as possible to get involved this year. The 2014 theme is ‘Welcome’, so we want you to have a think about how ‘welcome’ is shown in your community.

The SRC are awarding grants of £100 – £450 to help small community organisations to organise your own events as part of Refugee Week Scotland 2014. We strongly encourage you to apply and to spread the word to any other organisations or community groups that you think may be interested!

There are two files attached below – an Application Form and Grant Application Guidance Notes. Please read them both before applying! Receiving the grant from the SRC is unfortunately not guaranteed, so to make sure you are in the best position for acceptance, we urge you to read through these Guidance Notes thoroughly. We are looking for ideas that explore the theme – ‘Welcome’ – and discuss all the different things that this word can mean. For example, your activity could:

– Explore how welcome is shown in your community

– Encourage people to share their experiences of how welcome they have been made to feel here

– Encourage people to share experiences of how they have welcomed life in Scotland

Most importantly, you must demonstrate how your event will appeal to other communities and general public, and how you plan to involve them! The Community Celebration Events are the first step towards wide-scale understanding and integration among asylum seeker, refugee and local communities across the whole of Scotland. We want to know how your event will help this become a reality!

The deadline for submission is Monday 3^rd March, 5pm. Please send all completed applications to arts@scottishrefugeecouncil.org.uk

Into Film in Fife

Into Film is a new film education charity, bringing together FILMCLUB and First Light, gives 5-19 year olds a chance to experience film and the moving image creatively and critically, as well as learning about the film industry and careers within it. In or out of school Into Film cultivates their interest, and provide teachers and youth leaders with the tools and training to support engagement at all levels.

The film education programme includes learning resources, CPD and training, film clubs, filmmaking film festivals, industry interactions, youth engagement and more. Hidden Stories’ Animation Competition

Red Kite Animation and Edinburgh Museums & Galleries present an exciting animation competition designed to celebrate Edinburgh’s rich heritage and the art of animation.

Budding animators are invited to submit short animated films of 1-3 minutes, based upon either a real or imagined backstory to an object of their choice, housed in one of Edinburgh Museums & Galleries, including the City Art Centre, Museum of Childhood, Laursiton Castle and the Museums Store.

Submissions from any groups or individuals are invited for anyone living or studying in Scotland in the following three competition categories :

School boy promotes Red Cross resilience campaign through interactive Lego animation

A 14 year old school boy has produced Lego animations to promote the British Red Cross’ resilience campaign. Using a basic webcam and laptop, the interactive film was crafted in his tiny bedroom studio, bringing together an interest in amateur film-making and a life-long enthusiasm for Lego. The ‘Disaster Island’ film has now gone live on the British Red Cross website with the aim of helping the organisation to demonstrate the importance of resilience – the ability to withstand and recover from disasters at home and abroad.

From Flags to Flanders Fields

WW1 had a profound effect on the British population and communications played a vital role in both civilian and military life. With no radio, television or internet and few telephones in private homes, the public relied on newspapers for general information and telegrams for urgent, special messages. The military required rapid, secure communications in battle conditions which resulted in some major developments in technology. Imagine living at the time of WW1 and have a go at signalling with flags, lamps and Morse – and much more!

I am Unique!

What is happening in the amazing and rapidly changing world of DNA and genetics? What better way to learn about this fascinating and exciting area of science than to get hands-on with DNA extraction. In this workshop, learners create a unique necklace, containing their very own extracted DNA, to take home with them. Complementing our “I am unique” workshop, a mini-loan box is available to continue with the learning in your classroom. Introduce your inspired scientists to Dundee’s most inspiring scientists, learn about inheritance and explore more about DNA, its structure and why it matters!

Our extraordinary universe: amazing invisible light

Monday 17^th – Friday 21^st March

In this workshop, learners can participate in one or more investigative activities around visible and invisible electromagnetic radiation, making use of the hand-held infrared camera, laser optics kits, spectroscopes and ultraviolet sources. Through this, learners will develop their understanding of the properties of electromagnetic radiations, including visible light. How can we make use of visible and invisible light, and what difference does it make to us? How does gathering information across the EM spectrum from space impact on our lives?

For learners in third and fourth level or studying for qualifications in Physics in National 4 or 5.

Primary curriculum conversation day – Friday 7 March

Education Scotland is holding a conversation day focused on the primary curriculum on Friday 7 March in Duloch Primary School, Dunfermline. This event is aimed at school leaders. We are keen to take stock of how the curriculum is developing in primary schools and hear school leaders’ views and experiences.

The purpose of the day is to:
• consider how the curriculum is developing in the primary sector, particularly in relation to the raised expectations; and
• identify areas that require further support and what that support needs to look like.

There will be opportunities to hear from a variety of colleagues as to how they are taking forward curriculum development at a strategic level in their schools as well as time for discussion.
