Divided City by Theresa Breslin: New Musical Version for Primary Schools

Join Theresa Breslin and Elly Goodman of the Citizens Theatre as they offer a unique insight into the history of bringing this iconic book to the stage. Pupils and teachers will get the chance to ask Theresa and Elly questions about the play and the book and to find out more about this ground-breaking project. The Citizens Theatre has now staged three large scale musical theatre productions of Theresa Breslin’s Divided City, adapted for the stage by Martin Travers with an original score and songs by Claire McKenzie. Due to the success of our Commonwealth Games CPD in 2013 we have decided to add an extra date – Tuesday 29 April 2014.

This CPD Training Day is open to nursery, primary and secondary school teachers and is designed to provide you with a fun and creative session to adapt for your own classroom.

Explore three different aspects of the Commonwealth Games through dance:

– Ready, Set, Go! (creative dance tasks)

The Travelling Gallery’s Spring 2014 exhibition, I HEART SCOTLAND, is a solo show and takes a refreshing look at how contemporary artist Rachel Maclean, has chosen to explore her ideas about Scottish national identity.

Issues around power, culture, politics and history are raised together with romanticism and folktales – all through Rachel’s ingenious use of costume performance, digital photography, film and installation.

By means of dark humour and remarkable technical skills, Rachel offers insightful and shrewd observations on these and other significant themes, creating a complex and surreal vision of modern Scotland in what is certainly an important year for people to ponder its future.

The I HEART SCOTLAND exhibition includes work that was commissioned, published and produced by Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop for her very successful exhibition there during the 2013 Edinburgh Art Festival.

So far, touring mainly to Secondary schools, we have visited venues accross Angus, Edinburgh, Midlothian and the Highlands where the installation has stimulated lots of discussion and created quite a buzz of excitement amongst pupils and teachers alike. THIS LAND – 2013 Autumn Tour

To coincide with the Year of Natural Scotland, the Autumn 2013 exhibition in the Travelling Gallery brought together the work of a range International artists, both well-extablished and up-and-coming; chosen for their fascination with aspects of the Scottish landscape. The gallery contained a collection of artworks to captivate, resonate and inform –  initiating lots of observations and discussion from all different ages and abilities. There were 5 main artists exhibiting: Henry Coombes,  Andy Holden,  Hannah Imlach,Michael Reisch and Iain Sarjeant. The exhibition was accompanied by a complementary programme, which included the Beta Band music video ‘ Inner Meet Me’ by John Maclean and ‘ Wish You Were Here’, a series of 16 postcards by Francis Davies as well as a selection of artist books and sketchbooks by recent graduates.

Areas visited by the gallery with THIS LAND included Shetland, South Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, Lewis, Harris and the Uists and the Highlands.

An Audience with Graham Smith

The journey of ‘technology’ as it meets weather … as it meets art!

Join Fife Contemporary Art & Craft for the screening of ‘Six Years of Mondays’, a documentary artwork about a man called Graham
Smith living in Lochgelly, Fife, who has been making timelapse recordings of the view from his bedroom window everyday from 6am to 6pm since 2006. Graham will share his journey; from his interest in the local Scottish Weather, his technological background and how this led to the creation of www.fifeweather.co.uk, the UK’s only mobile weather lab (www.weatherevents.net), the timelapse recordings and Youtube channel.
Learn how Graham’s recordings were the basis of a commissioned piece of work by artists Thomson and Craighead (www.thomson-craighead.net) as part of Fife Contemporary Art & Craft’s ‘Weather Project’, which took place in Levenmouth and resulted in the creation of ‘Six Years of Mondays’ short video.
Fife Contemporary Art & Craft will share how the short video work takes us through a visualisation of six years of Mondays where each ‘year’ is soundtracked differently offering a range of contexts from which this contemplative landscape can be viewed. There will be a chance to ask questions at the end of the event with both Graham Smith and Fife Contemporary Art & Craft.

Tron Participation run a host of schemes for schools and pupils to get involved in;

Tron Skillshops
Drama classes for pupils P1 – S6. Weekly workshops held at the Tron Theatre for participants to explore the art of theatre making.

Tron Ambassadors
The Tron Ambassadors scheme gives S4-S6 school pupils the chance to be behind the scenes of a
working theatre. It enables them to make a deeper connection with the Tron Theatre and
gain a better understanding of the industry.

We are recruiting new Ambassadors for the 2014/15 term.

Tron Ambassadors will –

•Meet 1-2 times per month at the Tron Theatre (after school weekday meetings)
•Take part in tasks and challenges out with allocated Ambassador meetings
•Keep in contact via email with Tron Drama Officer on related tasks and challenges
•Take part in a variety of theatre workshops/master classes
•Attend Tron Shows
• Host Tweet Meets within the Tron Theatre linked to Tron productions
• Promote the Tron to friends and family
• Blog, tweet and post about the Ambassadors scheme, Tron shows and events
•Work as a team to create a Front of House event at Tron Skillshops show

This scheme allows Tron Participation to work closely with 2-3 schools each academic year and share our expertise. We work with schools within Glasgow and the surrounding local authorities.
The Partner schools programme is a mix of in school workshops, theatre trips and back stage tours. The partnership is hosted via Glow allowing us to keep in touch.

Get Scotland Dancing (GSD) was created by a Scottish Government policy in 2010 and is one of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Legacy programmes. It is also part of Culture 2014, the national strand of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme. It is free to join and school/youth groups can register at getscotlanddancing.org. Being part of the online community means you can find out what’s going on in your area and make connections with other dance groups and teachers who could help develop your work.

‘Weather to Whether’

Fife Contemporary Art & Craft (FCA&C) are delighted to announce the ‘Weather to Whether’ event in partnership with Bright Green Hydrogen, who operates the Hydrogen Office project in Methil.

The event is aimed at S2/S3 pupils and will showcase FCA&C’s‘Weather Project’, which took place in the Levenmouth area, as well as visual displays/working models of power from the weather and hydrogen and energy storage by Bright Green Hydrogen (see programme below).

We are delighted to be able to offer a travel subsidy for this event, supported by Fife Cultural Trust’s Seedcorn Transport Scheme (details and form below).

FCT SEEDCORN TRANSPORT SCHEME

The maximum amount you can apply for is £250 per school towards transport costs to attend this event.  Once you have confirmed your booking at the event through FCA&C, please complete the attached Seedcorn Transport Scheme Application Form and return it to the address at the bottom of the form.  This fund is administered by FCT Cultural Partnerships and they will confirm your award and advise how to claim the monies for your school.

Blue Blocks, Going to the Zoo and an orchestral Work-In-Progress

We’ve got a busy office here at Starcatchers HQ – with our Creative Skills and Expecting Something projects going full speed ahead, and productions of Hup, A Small Story, Blue Block Studio and Yellow Valley all touring over the next few months. For more details, and to marvel at how Starcatchers staff are keeping their sanity (lots of biscuits is the key!), read on! 

Blue Block Studio

Development of Blue Block Studio, our innovative programme of creative play and storytelling for babies and young children, which will be visiting 10 communities across Scotland as part of the     Culture 2014 programme celebrating the Commonwealth Games, is well under way! We’re very excited that some venues are now on sale and others will be joining them very soon.

Blue Block Studio is a space specially designed for babies under 24 months. It is a creative place for babies and their adults to listen, to explore, to build, to watch, to lie down, to look and to touch.  See www.starcatchers.org.uk/things-to-do/blue-block-studio to check which community we’ll be visiting near you!

A Small Story

Dates for the Scottish tour of ‘a small story/ eine kleine gesichte’ our co-production with Berlin-based Theater o.N, are now on our website at www.starcatchers.org.uk/things-to-do/small-storyeine-kleine-geschichte-scotland with most venues now available to book!

The show is for children aged 2 and over and is all about the small stories which make up big stories life – love, marriage, babies, friendships, everything! It has been made by Andy Manley and Ania Michaelis with design by Fred Pommerehn and music by Danny Krass.

Creative Skills Programme

Our Creative Skills Programme is in full swing! Early years practitioners in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Fife, Inverclyde and South Lanarkshire took part in a What is Creativity? session with Heather at the start of the year and have begun practical sessions delivered by Early Years artists. Sessions have been well attended with early years practitioners from a variety of settings, and early feedback is positive with a high percentage of participants having already started using skills and techniques they’ve learned in the sessions in their own practice.

The HNC Childcare students at Glasgow Kelvin College and Dumfries and Galloway College also continued their training, with music sessions led by Greg Sinclair. The students seem to have carried the same enthusiasm from last year’s sessions into the new year – long may it continue!

Expecting Something

We’re more than halfway through our second block of Expecting Something, our project with the Family Nurse Partnership Edinburgh and Lothians. In this block lead artist Sacha Kyle has been looking at the concept of there social and connected mother and baby, and our young mothers, babies and mothers-to-be, have been enjoying relaxing music and movement with various visiting artists. Our mums, their partners, friends or family are also looking forward to the last couple of sessions in this block, where we’ll be going on trips to Edinburgh Botanic Gardens and Edinburgh Zoo! All together now “We’re going to the zoo, zoo, zoo, How about you, you, you…”

Nickum

We’re getting closer and closer to the culmination of our Nickum project, in conjunction with the RSNO, and nursery and family centre venues in Aberdeen are now confirmed for the mini-tour of the work-in-progress Hup. Abi and Hazel, our lead artists, along with musicians Liz Lloyd and Andrew Huggan have only had one week of intensive rehearsals but already Hup is coming together and enthralled the 0-24 month audiences who saw shadings at Out of the Blue, Leith and Ashgrove Family Centre, Aberdeen.
