Livingstone’s Legacy: Equality and Education
A national art competition has been launched to mark the bi-centenary of David Livingstone’s birth. The competition is open to primary and secondary schools in Scotland who are invited to submit entries byFriday 31 January 2014.
Winners will be announced by the Minister for External Affairs and International Development, Humza Yousef, on Friday 7 March and winning entries will be displayed at a public exhibition at the Edinburgh Storytelling Centre from 8 -15 March 2014 alongside artwork by young people from Malawi.
The competition is being co-ordinated by The Open University in Scotland and the Scotland Malawi Partnership. Further details of the competition including links to Curriculum for Excellence can be found at www.tinyurl.com/LivingstoneArt.
National Galleries of Scotland would like to invite teachers and educators for a guided tour of The Nation//Live exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery on Wednesday 22 January 2014 @ 5.15 – 7pm.
The Nation//Live has been developed with communities across Scotland in conjunction with contemporary artists and filmmakers, exploring key moments in Scotland’s history through artworks from the national collection. The project was split into five regional encounters: Work in Clydebank, Union in Inverness, Faith on the Isle of Skye, Civil War in Dumfries and Galloway and Roots with migrants living across Scotland. NGS would like explore how the outcomes from this project could be of use to teachers of art, citizenship and history.

What is the My Place Photography Competition?
Now in their ninth year the Scottish Civic Trust My Place Photography Competition is a heritage photographic competition for young people in Scotland of school age. It is aimed at encouraging young people to explore their built environments in a creative way using photography as means of investigation and creative expression.
The My Place Photography Competition is part of Scotland’s contribution to European Heritage Days, and links into the International Heritage Photographic Experience run out of Barcelona and to the Council of Europe.
The awards are supported by the Scottish Government, The Lighthouse and Architecture + Design Scotland
Who can enter?
All young people in Scotland are eligible to enter.
Entrants should be of either primary school age or secondary school age.
Entries should be made by a group leader or teacher on behalf of their students.
All entries are recognised with a certificate and will be placed in an online gallery, displayed in a public exhibition at The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Design and Architecture.
Two winners will be selected by a panel of judges and these will go on to represent Scotland in a worldwide exhibition and catalogue.

The International Children’s Painting Competition on the Environment is an international contest, with regional and overall winners, for young people aged 6 to 14 organised by one of the United Nations agencies. It invites children to produce a painting on the theme of ‘Food Waste’ and saving the planet. The Think.Eat.Save website is designed to help inform their thinking around supply, waste and food security issues

The Economic and Social Research Council is running a ‘Young people’s Photographic competition’ (deadline 9th December ) which challenges young people aged between 14 and 18 to produce a picture on the theme of “Where do I belong” – thinking about dimensions such as community, family, friends, country, beliefs, etc. Full details on their website.
Time To Shine, Scotland’s arts strategy for young people aged 0–25, was launched on 8 November by Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs and Janet Archer, Chief Executive, Creative Scotland.
The strategy – which is centred around the three key themes of creating and sustaining engagement; nurturing potential and talent; and developing infrastructure and support – sets out a vision and key recommendations to enable Scotland’s children and young people to flourish and achieve, in and through the arts and creativity.

Join us on Tuesday 5 November (4.00-4.45 pm) to learn more about how William Mitchell and his design team at 4cDesign effectively utilised science, technology, engineering, maths, art and design skills to create the Queen’s Baton and how you and your learners can be involved on 26 November (10.00 – 11.00 am) by considering your own baton design for your school or centre.

2 day workshop title ‘Idea and sketchbook development’ at the Off the Rails Arthouse in Ladybank, Fife onMondays October 7th and 14th, 9.00am – 3.00pm.
One of the most important aspects of a students’ portfolio is demonstrating their potential and their commitment to art outside of the classroom. Working on self motivated ideas is a really important indication of this potential and commitment.
For this reason and following the success of our first workshop in July, Portfolio Oomph is running a second‘Ideas and sketchbook development workshop’ at Off the Rails Arthouse in Ladybank especially for school pupils wanting to apply to art college this year.
Participants will learn how to generate and explore individual ideas through the creative process in your sketchbook. Looking at research, development and introducing you to some exciting new artists. Ideal for those students applying to art college next year or those who want to add to their higher or advanced higher portfolio. A sketchbook and some materials will be provided.
Portfolio Oomph was established in 2012 by artist and lecturer Julie Read who has worked at F.E and H.E. for 17 years and has interviewed 100s of candidates for Edinburgh College of Art first year.
