Free digital animation workshop for schools

2014 marks the centenary of pioneering Scottish artist, filmmaker and musician, Norman McLaren. Born in Stirling in 1914, McLaren was a rising star of the British Amateur Film Scene of the 1930s when he immigrated to Canada at the bequest of fellow Scot John Grierson, the founder of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). Under the NFB’s patronage McLaren produced a staggering body of innovative and exciting animated film which still feels incredibly contemporary today. The NFB also celebrates its 75th Anniversary in 2014, and we are proud to celebrate Scotland’s connections with this highly regarded national cultural institution during the year Scotland hosts the Commonwealth Games.

As part of the McLaren2014 programme, we are excited to be offering schools a free digital animation workshop. This workshop will introduce the techniques of McLaren and the fundamentals of animation to young people through an intensive but fun education experience. A highly skilled animator will guide the children as they create their animated films using the McLaren Workshop app created by the National Film Board of Canada.

We aim to organise workshops in schools and venues across Scotland from December 2013 to August 2014. Click below to download a document that will give you more details about the content of the workshop, the curriculum outcome and more specifications (age group, capacity, resources provided, etc.). Please note that these workshops are free of charge.

Teachers who are interested can contact us at mclaren2014@cmi-scotland.co.uk. They would simply need to send us their contact details and give us a first and second choice for when they would like the workshop to take place. We would then be in touch with them to discuss further details.

Please also note that FILMCLUB have confirmed the rights for the complete McLaren collection: http://www.filmclub.org/film/17876/norman-mclaren-the-master-s-collection-disc-1. Focus on Creativity and Health and wellbeing in schools

At this year’s Scottish Learning Festival, Education Scotland has launched two reports in the Curriculum Impact series that is designed to present a subject-by-subject picture of how children and young people are experiencing learning in different areas of the 3-18 curriculum across the country.

These reports focus on creativity, and health and wellbeing. The reports have been compiled with input from a range of stakeholders following independent inspection activities in schools and other learning environments.  They identify emerging innovative and thought-provoking practice, while highlighting important areas for development.
