parking around the school

We would like to advise you that the school and Parent Council have been working with a local Councillor, the local police and community wardens to address problems with parking and driving in the school locale at the start and end of school days.  You may have noticed that both community wardens and local police have been in attendance more frequently.  In order to further support safe use of the nearby roads, we have been notified of a ‘Ring and Report’ Line which anyone in the school community can ring if problems are noted.  The idea is that, if possible, the community wardens will react immediately and come to the site – the number is 0800-013-0076.  Contacting the local police is of course another option.

Last day of term

We have been asked by the school kitchen to make you aware that only soup and sandwiches will be available for lunch on the last day of term – Friday 21st December 2018.

We would also like to remind you that we extend a very warm welcome to all to join us at Orchardhill Parish Church to celebrate with the children and staff at our Church Service on Friday 21st December 2018 at 1:15pm.  If your child normally has a home lunch it would be appreciated if they could remain in school on that particular Friday.  If this is not possible please advise your child’s class teacher and we would advise you that the lunch break will be from 11:50am and they must return by 12:40pm at the very latest as the children will be leaving early to walk to the church.  As P1 and P2 pupils will be hosting the service they will be having an earlier lunch break (along with House Captains, Vice Captains and musicians) from 11:00am until 11:50am as they will be leaving for the church by 12 noon.

All pupils will return to school after the service.  Primary pupils will be dismissed at the earlier time of 2:30pm but the afternoon nursery pupils will not be dismissed until 4:00pm (although you may take your nursery child earlier should you so wish).

We would remind you that the school is closed to pupils from Monday 24th December 2018 until Sunday 6th January 2019 and will resume as normal on Monday 7th January 2019.

May we again take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and happy holiday.

Hopscotch Theatre

You may have noticed from the parental calendar that Hopscotch Theatre will be visiting the school during the morning of Wednesday 12th December 2018 to entertain the pupils.

There will be two performances in our Gym Hall and in view of the timings it will unfortunately not be possible for the school kitchen to serve tuck at break time that day.

We wanted to give you advance warning and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Changes to tuck

As you may be aware the school kitchen offer a healthy snack to pupils at break everyday with cupcakes and cookies only available one day a week on Wednesdays.  To cope with the popularity of these items the school kitchen is now splitting the availability of cupcakes and cookies as undernoted:

P1-P3 pupils – cupcakes and cookies available on Wednesdays at break (Upper School pupils will only be able to purchase a healthy snack)
P4-P7 pupils – cupcakes and cookies available on Thursdays at break (Lower School pupils will only be able to purchase a healthy snack)

water bottles

Could we please remind you to provide a water bottle for your child in order for them to keep hydrated and as children also need to have a drink during PE lessons.

Although water fountains are available in school we are finding that many pupils do not bring a suitable container.

Sports Clubs P1 – P3

We are the Sports Committee. We want to help everyone get more active and play more sport. To do this we need information about what clubs P1-3 are going to outside of school.

If you have some time could you fill in this short questionnaire (5 minutes or less!) to tell us about your child’s clubs. This will help us plan clubs for Term 2 and see which clubs in Giffnock are really popular.

Christmas Fayre

Preparations are nearly complete and we are looking forward to welcoming you all to our annual Christmas Fayre on Saturday 24th November 2018.

Again we would invite pupils to wear something ‘festive’ on Friday 23rd November and our amazing class teachers will be collecting voluntary donations for our Red Stall that day.

All donations are very much appreciated but your help is also necessary to ensure these events continue to run. If you are able to spare some time on the 24th between 12 and 3 pm then please contact us at giffnockpc@hotmail.co.uk.

All money raised goes towards every child in the school.

Many thanks.

Recycle old pens and pencils with the eco committee

We are now registered as a BIC school and nursery.

We would love you to donate dried up pens (felt tips, whiteboard pens, biros) and pencils that may be too short to use or broken.

We can recycle them and collect points which can then be turned into charitable donations for charities of our choice.

Click on the link to find out more.

Please send your donations into school with your child who will give it to their class teacher to be passed on to Miss Emo who is co-ordinating this intiative.

Thanks for your help,

Giffnock Eco Committee

Scottish Sun Free Books for schools

As you are aware Giffnock Primary School have registered with the Scottish Sun for Free Books for Schools.  We have had a great response and we thank you for your support so far.

We understand that this coming Tuesday 13th November the Sun Newspaper will be running a bonus token day which would help us on reaching the required target.  Please hand any  tokens into our school office.

Parent council Christmas fayre

The Parent Council is looking forward to welcoming you to your Christmas Fair on Saturday, 24th November from 12-3pm and we need your help in order to make this event a huge success!  The more you raise, the more equipment, books and technology the school can buy.

You can help us in the following ways:

  • donations of toys, books or teddies that are looking for a new home
  • an item for the Christmas hampers

This year each class will create a festive hamper that will be raffled off at the Fair and we need your help.  Please remember items must be non-perishable food items and any alcohol will need to be handed to the Parent Council hub – see below – as pupils can’t bring alcohol to school.

The Parent Council hub will collect ALL donations in the playground on Thursday, 8th, Friday 9th &  Monday, 12th November at school drop off and collection times or sent in school bags (non-alcoholic).

Raffle tickets will be sent home with your child shortly for sale. Please sell as many as you can!

If you can help out on the day, please email giffnockpc@homail.co.uk and we’ll get in touch.

Please follow us on Facebook and twitter for further information on the Fayre and other community events and thanks again for your continued support.

Children in need Pudsey biscuits

We have been asked by the school kitchen to advise you that the kitchen will be selling Pudsey shortbread biscuits for Children In Need on Friday 16th November.  The biscuits will cost 35p (10p going to Children in Need).  On this occasion in order to allow the charity donation to be made, biscuits will be sold on a CASH ONLY basis and NOT through ParentPay.  The kitchen will only be able to sell one biscuit per child to ensure that no one will miss out.  The kitchen have asked if you could try to ensure that your child brings the exact money as they will have a limited amount of change.

Giffnock Primary School Book Fair

Giffnock Primary School Book Fair

Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 November 2018

Dear Parent / Guardian

Travelling Book Fair

We always want to encourage children to enjoy reading for pleasure and that’s why we’re holding a Book Fair on our parent/teacher evenings this Wednesday and Thursday.

The Travelling Book Company Fair will be held in the Library and there are hundreds of exciting titles to browse through with your child. We get commission from every book that is bought and this commission enables us to buy new books for the library, for class topics and for class reading.

The Travelling Book Company brings a fantastic range of great children’s books right into the school for the children to explore. The range contains a balanced mix of fiction, non-fiction and activity titles, carefully put together so that there will be something for everyone. On the shelves you will find humour, action, drama, intrigue and mystery!

Children will be given a leaflet on Tuesday which gives an idea of the range and price of books, but there are lots more to see on the night!

We hope that you and your child will enjoy the leaflet and looking at the books on Wednesday or Thursday.

Happy reading!
