FAOL Science: Forces/ Balloon Cars

We have been successful learners today and explored forces using push toys and balloons. We observed how the different toys didn’t move unless a force was applied to them, then created our own moving cars using Mobilo. We added balloons to see if they would move using the force of air.

FAOL: Science – Ice Cream in a Bag

Successful Learners    Confident Individuals

The Moonbeams have had lots of fun learning with ice this week.

First for our science experiment, the children mixed some ingredients with milk and shook in a bag with another bag of ice and salt to create some delicious ice cream which they all enjoyed tasting.

Then carrying on with our ice theme, the children have been learning about Penguins as part of our Edinburgh Zoo theme. We learned that Penguins spend most of their time in the ice cold water and that they are able to cope with the cold temperatures as they are well insulated with layers of fat.

The Moonbeams dipped their hands in the ice cold water and decided it was very cold. They then dipped their hands in the water again but this time they  were covered in lard. The children were able to say that it did not feel as cold.

FAOL – SCIENCE

*Successful Learners* *Confident Individuals*

This week we have been learning more about where our food comes from. We looked closely at where Milk comes from and created our own experiment to experience ‘Milking a Cow’.

After ‘Milking the Cow’, we followed a simple recipe to make Ice-cream in a Bag. We explored the ice and talked about hot & cold. We mixed the ice in a big bag with salt & then placed a smaller bag of milk inside it and shook it around to watch the milk turn into ice-cream. We found it was much harder for the chocolate milk to turn to ice-cream!

And for the best part…

FAOL Sciences – Percussion Instruments

The Snowdrops have been exploring the different ways we can make sounds using percussion instruments.  We decided to make our own percussion instruments using recycled milk cartons and Scottish foods.  We bought some Scottish oats, lentils, peas and macaroni on our outing to Tesco.  Everyone made effective contributions – choosing and filling our own containers.  After sealing our bottles, the Snowdrops found we could make lots of noise by shaking them.  Lots of successful learning and great fun to shake when we sing ‘Ye canny shuv your granny off a bus’!
