Mental Health Week Scotland

Mental Health Week Scotland was a huge success at New Cumnock Primary School. We were fortunate to have had visiting specialists come and deliver sessions throughout the week to support this:

Pauline Auld from PA Dance Academy delivered dance sessions; Sharon McQuillan from ShapeShift Fitness Studio delivered Yoga & Mediation sessions; Gina Scott from Bunnylove brought her petting zoo; and James McDonald (Paddy), East Ayrshire’s Countryside Development Officer delivered learning activities in the Wildlife Garden, as well as land art and river dipping.

As well as this, the children took part in food preparation activities, nature walks to Knockshinnoch Lagoons, Art activities, class games, kindness activities, a movie session and a picnic in the playground afternoon.

During this time, the children have truly excelled, demonstrating a great understanding and engagement with the themes and activities presented. They enthusiastically participated in a variety of activities designed to support good mental health, showing a remarkable ability to connect with and benefit from each experience. Their proactive approach to learning strategies for self-help was particularly impressive, as they not only absorbed the information but also applied it in meaningful ways. The children’s ability to reflect on their mental well-being and that of their peers was evident, as they shared insights and supported each another throughout the week. Their exceeding expectations in this area is a testament to their maturity, empathy, and commitment to personal growth. We are incredibly proud of the children’s achievements during Mental Health Week Scotland and look forward to seeing them continue to thrive in all aspects of their learning journey.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped support or deliver these wonderful experiences for the children: parent helpers, visiting specialists and the hard work and dedication of all the school staff who continually strive to give our children a diverse variety of enriching learning experiences.

Sports Day 14/5/26

Sports Day will be held next Thursday, 14th May 2026. Parents/carers are invited to join us for 10am at the Glens Park.

Children are encouraged to come wearing their House Team colours on Thursday. Please do not worry if they don’t have any items in their colour, there is no need to buy anything new, sports gear will suffice.

A wee reminder of colours:
Bracken 💛
Heather ❤️
Pine 💚
Thistle 💙

This year, on Sports Day, we are also asking our pupils to bring in a food/drink item in their house colour.

Our Parent Council will use these to make 4 House Hampers which we will be raffled off.

Raffle tickets will be on sale at Sports Day for £1 per strip. Please ensure you bring cash for this and look our for our Parent Helpers at their table.

The raffle will be drawn and winners announced at our Summer Fayre on Saturday 6th June.

Thank you again for your continued support.

Swimming Lessons 2026

We are delighted to share with you that due to a successful funding application from our Parent Council to the New Cumnock Development Trust, every child in our school will receive a 5 week block of swimming at our local swimming pool, commencing on Monday 25th May 2026. Lessons will take place on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday over the 5 week block.

In addition to this, each child will receive a voucher for a free swim to use in the summer holidays. (Please note anyone attending without a voucher would be required to pay for entry and booking prior to entry would also be required.).

Please see the timetable below of when your child’s class will attend.

On your child’s swimming days they must bring in a bag:

  • A towel
  • Swimsuit/shorts
  • Goggles (if they wish to use them)

Parent helpers to support the walking to and from the pool have been arranged.

We ask that if any parents/carers of our Primary 1 pupils wish to come to the pool to support with the changing of their OWN CHILD ONLY prior to or after the lesson is finished, please see the timings below. Parents/carers in attendance are asked to use the coloured changing rooms next to the pool rather than the communal changing rooms. The class teacher will also be on hand to support with the changing of our infant classes within the changing rooms.

Please note that there will not be any phone calls made home for missing swimming bags, as we are sure you can appreciate how busy our office is. Any child who does not have the appropriate kit will sit pool side with their class teacher during the 30 minute lesson.

A huge thank you again to the New Cumnock Development Trust for their generous donation, we know our families will be extremely grateful of their child receiving the opportunity of lessons at no cost to them. ❤

Benedetti Foundation Workshop 12/3/26

Today our P5/6, P6 and P7 classes were fortunate enough to take part in a music workshop with Callum and Lucy from the Benedetti Foundation.

We took part in learning about different beats and rhythms and listening carefully to patterns of sounds which were made. We had to identify the different instruments which were used and some of us even had turns at leading the rest of the classes. Everyone loved it and participated extremely well!

World Book Day 2026

We had lots of fun celebrating World Book Day this year, from dressing up as book characters or in our comfy pjs ready for a bedtime story, taking part in activities in class, joining live lessons and visiting the Book Fair.

Thank you for your support in purchasing from our Book Fair. Your purchases will contribute to funds towards our school which will enable us to buy more books for our school and class libraries.

Welby Breakfast 17/2/26

A huge thank you to Yvonne and her team from Welby Breakfast for coming to visit us at school. We are extremely grateful to our local Premier store for nominating us to receive a visit.
