Primary 3

Primary 3 – Term 4

Literacy

Reading – this term we are going to build upon our reading for information skills to take notes under given headings then use these notes to create non-fiction texts.  We will listen for information, read for information, highlight important parts, take notes then use our notes to create informative texts.  This will be in the context of minibeasts.

As always, we will continue to use Bug Club in school to support our ability to read fluently and with expression.  The focus of this will be improving our reading comprehension and aiming for accuracy in our responses.  Children should continue to aim for 2 20minute sessions of Bug Club reading as part of their home learning.

Writing – In conjunction with reading, we will use the information we have gained from reading to create our own information texts.  These will link to our IDL and include diagrams, fact files and reports.

We will also continue to write personal texts weekly.  Through this we will learn how to use a range of punctuation in our writing and be encouraged to use writer’s strategies to engage the reader.

Spelling – this term we are going to learn spelling rules such as how to change a word to the past tense or to change a word from singular to plural.  We will also have the opportunities to reinforce and practice key word spelling.

Numeracy and Maths

In numeracy we are going to focus on subtraction and division again.  We will build upon what we learned in term 2 and use this to progress further.  We are going to develop written and mental strategies including an empty number line and vertical subtraction.  We will continue to practice and reinforce our knowledge of number bonds, doubles, halves, rounding and skip counting.

In maths we are going to learn about fractions.  We will learn to identify and understand the concept of half and a quarter, progressing onto fifths and thirds.  We will learn how to find a fraction of an amount and link this to division.

We will also learn about 2D shapes, 3D objects and symmetry.  We will identify the features of these and have the opportunity to create our own symmetrical pictures and shapes.

Health and Wellbeing

PE – In physical education our two themes will be ‘hockey skills’ and ‘athletics’.  We will develop our skills in each of these areas and have the opportunity to use these in games.  We hope to take PE outdoors for athletics as we practice run, jump and throw.

During our health and wellbeing sessions we are going to focus on ‘our bodies’ and learn the correct names for our body parts.  We will focus on the importance of looking after our bodies and keeping them private.

We will also learn about safe places to play in our local area and consider how we can risk assess if an area is safe or dangerous for us to play in.

Interdisciplinary Learning

This term, our IDL is about minibeasts.  We will have opportunities to go outdoors and set pit fall traps.  We will use magnifying glasses to look closely at minibeasts and classify them.  We will investigate their habitats and where they fit on the food train.  We will learn information about insects and minibeasts through our literacy also.

Expressive Arts

Music – Mrs Hill will continue to deliver weekly music input to us.  This term we will continue our term 3 work and learn how to play different notes and simple tunes on our ocarinas.

Religious and Moral Education

We are going to learn about a range of Places of Worship.  We will compare and contrast these and discover what is similar and different about them.  We will also think about where is special to us in our lives.
