Primary 5 Term 4 Overview

Literacy

Reading – Bug Club is just one of the ways that we have been practicing our reading and comprehension skills. We are aiming to improve our bug club scores by reading texts carefully and ensuring we understand what we are reading. In term 4, we are really focusing on providing detailed answers in our reading questions.

Writing – During this term we are focusing on character and setting writing. We are learning how to use descriptive language to describe different characters and settings. In this term, we are going to participate in different practical activities for our topic ‘Plants’. We are going to learn how to write up different science experiments from our plants topic.

Spelling – In this term, we are focusing on learning all our key words confidently. Each week we are going to complete a different spelling task in the class to help us learn our key words.

Numeracy and Mathematics

During this term, we are focusing on division and multiplication. The pupils will be using and sharing different strategies to help solve division problems. We are continuing to practice our times tables reaching the 8 times table. Pupils will practice their times tables in class and at home.

In outer maths, we are learning about 2D and 3D shapes, Symmetry and Area and Volume. Pupils will carry out practical activities to help learn the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. Pupils will explore the mathematical language used to describe shapes. In term 4, we are exploring symmetry where we are able to explore lines of symmetry in different shapes and objects through practical activities.

Health and Wellbeing

PE – In Physical Education we are focusing on tennis in term 4. The class will learn different tennis shots, strategies and tactics. Pupils will use their knowledge of the different skills in tennis and apply them into game like situations. We are also focusing on athletics in term 4. The pupils will be able to participate in a range of activities including: hurdles, long jump, high jump and sprinting.

During our health and wellbeing sessions we are going to focus on ‘Parenthood’. The pupils will explore the role of a parent/carer and the skills, commitment and qualities the role requires.

Interdisciplinary Learning

During this term, our topics are ‘Plants’ and ‘Animals and Habitats’. We will learn about different plants and the main parts of plants. We will explore the process of germination and pollination. The pupils will research the different uses of plants in our everyday life. In our topic of ‘Animals and Habitats’ the pupils will look at different wild animals, where they live, what they eat and their survival rates. The pupils will be able to research different animals that are endangered and learn how we can help endangered species.

 

Expressive Arts

Primary 5 will continue with the ‘Strings Project’. We will continue to attend a music class every Monday afternoon. During this class, we will learn how to play an instrument of our choice. The instrument choices are: violin, viola and double bass.

We will create different artwork that relates to our plants topic. The pupils will be able to use a range of materials to create a variety of artwork.
