School News
A reminder that the deadline for ordering school uniform is Wednesday 9th May. Due to lack of space to store uniforms please make sure you order what you need for the school year ahead, as we are unable to guarantee that any orders placed after the deadline will be met. A sample of the school clothing is available for you to view in the entrance hall at the main door at the school. Please come in to check the sizes you require, as we cannot guarantee that exchanges will be made when your order arrives.
Some Class News
Primary 1
We have been thinking about some of the ways we can look after the world ‘putting our rubbish in the bin’. We talked about what might happen if it doesn’t go in the bin and where it might end up.
Oona “It might hurt the animals in the sea”.
We have been looking at our daffodils that we planted in January.
Miya-Lilly- “They’re flowers now”.
Clay- “Some are still small”.
We’ve enjoyed getting outside and playing. We’ve had animals in the water tray. Zoe- “We’re keeping them safe there”.
Primary 1/2
This week we went under the sea in our Zoo topic. We have enjoyed learning about the zones in the ocean and the animals that live in each zone. We also know lots of facts about the Blue Whale.
Primary 2
We have been looking at the extreme weather we have in Castle Douglas. We have designed posters to tell everyone about it.
We have been using the Beat Bears in Music to help us keep in time with the music. We are also using the Bears to help us learn to read music.
Struan – “It is fun using the bears.”
Georgie – “We are good at reading the bears.”
Darci – “We need to work on getting the time right.”
Coby – “They are helping us to remember the pattern.”
Primary 2/3
In P.E we have started practising on Circus skills this week. We were balancing and working with partners. We wrote to the council to say we would be putting on a circus event for our families.
In Music we are learning a song about a circus. We have sorted ourselves into circus groups – Acrobats, Clowns, Animals and Animal Trainers.
Primary 3
This week P3 have been learning about time in maths. We have been learning how to show, read and write anologue and digital times in words and then we were learning to convert anologue times to digital times.
Freya – “I found it a bit tricky at first but it’s getting much easier now”
Lexi – “I was a bit mixed up with quarter to and quarter past but Miss McCall helped me and now I can tell the difference!”
Kianna – “I have been learning to tell the time in five minute intervals”
We were also learning all about acrostic poems. We chose a subject and wrote our own acrostic poem!
Kelvin – “We got to choose a subject and write a poem about it. I choose shoes”
Freya – “I tried to make my poem funny”
Saffron – “I wrote my poem about friendship”
Lewis – “An acrostic poem is when you write a word down the way and the write things about that word across the way”
Isla McF. – “Each line has to start with the letters of the word going down the way”
We have started learning about the different parts of the body.
We have also started our new topis – The Romans. We explored the different kinds of Roman houses. We made models of a Roman house using different construction materials and drew a labelled picture of a Roman house.
Amelia – “The rich Roman’s houses in the countryside were called a villa”
Callum – “The poor Roman’s lived in flats called insulae. The poorer you were the higher up in the flats you lived”
Fraser – “We built a Roman house out of blocks. We built a villa. It had a swimming pool”
Kacie – “Rich Roman’s houses had a swimming pool. They filled it up with rain water”
In ICT we were using google to help us find information. We had to find some facts about the Romans.
Callum learned – “The Roman roads were straight to make journeys quicker and shorter”
Isla learned that “The rich Romans would have running water”
Primary 3/4
P3/4 have had a very busy week with lots of visitors to the classroom. We had a visit from Stella to talk to us about healthy eating/living.
“We got to make a healthy plate” – Lhlyaijana.
On Thursday we were very lucky to get a delivery of chick eggs who are going to have our class to care for and watch hatch. We also had a visit from Angela from Tesco’s who came into let us try lots of different foods and milk.
Tika said she loved the papaya and mango yogurt.
Shea said “I didn’t like the green milk”.
Murray – “I didn’t like the plain yogurt” and Alannah said she liked the pickled onion cheese.
Elle took part in a gymnastic show.
Primary 4
We introduced volleyball in PE and have started learning the volley technique. We worked in pairs to practice our skills, remembering to bend our knees, keep the ball above our head and push it gently with diamond shape fingers.
In maths we have been working out the total of several items and how much change we should receive. We played active games with friends and explored receipts brought in from home.
This week in topic we have been learning about the skeleton. We investigated x-rays, learned and labelled the bones, created our own hidden skeleton and played bones bingo! Mr Tyson taught us some first aid so that we know how to react in unsafe situations and the actions we can take to help someone in an emergency. We now know Dr ABC, basic CPR and how to make bandages and slings.
Georgia, Josh and Barney have moved up to swimming club. Emma has moved up to green at swimming. Anna, Skye, Ruby and Georgia are preparing for their upcoming grade 1 ballet exam. Yvie has learned the Serpentine in canter at horse riding.
Primary 4/5
This week we have started our class novel ‘Gangsta Granny’ by David Walliams. We have been writing our own set of instructions just like Ben from the book.
We have also started SuperScot in P.E. We have been working hard to achieve top scores.
Amy- ” It has been fun writing my own set of instructions on how to pretend to go to sleep”.
Rosie-” Gangsta Granny is so funny! I liked the way that Ben described his Granny. She must stink of cabbage!”
Primary 5
This week on Tuesday we went on a hill walk trip for our topic Mary Queen of Scots. We walked from Carsphairn to Polmaddy. Mr. Tyson showed us how to read a map. It was good fun. I think we all enjoyed it. There is more information on what we learned on our photograph captions.
Primary 5/6
This week we have been learning about 12 and 24 hour time. We have been converting 12 hour time to 24 hour and visa versa. We are also preparing for our Assembly next Friday on Healthy Living.
Primary 6
On Monday, Primary 6 had a very exciting day! We went on a class trip to Glasgow Science Centre with Dalbeattie Primary 6. We shared a bus to Glasgow and spent the day doing a lot of fun activities. We watched, “A Beautiful Planet”, at the iMax cinema and then flew through space in the Planetarium! We then had a great time exploring the three levels of different activities.

“I don’t usually enjoy 3D cinemas but I loved the iMax film!” (Mia) “I liked the hamster wheel in the workshop!” (Bob)
“I enjoyed controlling the robotic arm and picking up a tennis ball.” (Katherine)
“I enjoyed the slanted room.It made me feel quite dizzy, though!”(Daniel G)
“I liked the optical illusions- they were cool!” (Hayden)
Primary 6/7
We took part in a job fair with Mrs. Hart. We had the opportunity to speak to people with different jobs such as a pilot,vet, joiner, DJ and lots more.
In language we have began work on a class talk.
We started our new class novel – ‘Billionaire Boy’ and found out our new topic is called ‘The Apprentice’.
In topic we have been learning and developing debating skills. Our subject was – “should America have dropped Atomic Bombs on Japan in WW2?”.
In Maths we have continued money skills and have been discussing profit/loss and discounts.
Primary 7
“The job fair was great. I really enjoyed talking to the Fibre Glass Manager as I didn’t know much about his job before” – Taylor.
“The dances we are learning in the show club are very energetic” – George.
“In Art we were learning how to shade cups” – Becky.
“To get 25% of something you need to divide by 4” – Rhianna.
“I’m feeling nervous but excited for lunch at the high school this week”- Lily.
“The doctor, at the job fair, let us look in other people’s ear with his equipment” – Harry.
“The mini wind turbines were difficult and fiddly to make” – Owen.
