On Tuesday 1st April, Primary 4 visited Drumlanrig Castle.
We were met by Ian the tour guide who gave us an exciting tour of the castle both inside and out.
Drumlanrig is the most haunted castle in the whole of Scotland and we were fascinated to hear of the many ghosts living there.
Two of particular interest was the yellow monkey who was originally kept as a pet. However, he was a naughty monkey and hard to control. So the family locked him in a room where he starved to death. It is said that he waits at the top of the stairs to ambush. He will not intentionally hurt you; he is simply looking to steal any food you might have.
The second ghost is that of a young princess. When she was 16, her father tried to force her to marry his best friend who was over 70 years old! She refused and was beheaded in the castles courtyard. Her head rolled along the ground and fell in to the castle well. Late at night she is often seen wandering around the castle grounds attempting to summon her head from the well. Her father was so petrified by the thought of her getting her head back and seeking revenge that he had a metal guard fitted over the well to prevent the head from escaping.
