Burns Celidh

On January 25th the school had a Burns Ceildh down in the Ramsay hall. P7 said Address to a Haggis by Robert Burns. They carried the haggis down the stairs round the front of the stage and back up And Jacob cut the haggis.

After lunch we took a mini bus over to the Ramsey hall because there was a village Ceildh and Port Ellen primary school was invited. P7 said Address to a Haggis, P6 said Scots Wa Hae, P5 and P4 said Auld Lang Syne, P3 said Street Talk and P1 and P2 said Wee Willie Winky.

Brody did auld Lang Syne on the tin whistle and Hannah did scots Wa Hae on the tin whistle. We got water and short bread and the adults got pancakes, Irnbru, scones and cakes.

Over all it was a really good day.

ENDEAVOUR FAIR

On 19/06/23 We had a Endeavour fair. For the Endeavour fair we had to set up our targets and make one big aim its like a independent topic that we do on our own. Also it has to be something that we have not done before. The whole school do an endeavor but p5/6/7 get judged and you win a trophy the winner this year was Iona Kirkpatrick. To make an Endeavour it takes about 6 weeks to complete it. here are some good examples of Endeavour. Mya Munro who won the endeavor cup last year for doing sewing. Iona did history on Islay for he Endeavour. another good example was Finlay Addison who did football training for the whole school. Also Our parents got to come in and see the projects and it was set up for Monday many people came to see our things. In my opinion it was really fun.

Health and Wellbeing Afternoon

In school we had a health and wellbeing afternoon On Thursday 18th May so people could stay more healthy and parents and people from the community came into school. We also got to go round the school doing different activities:

Coast guard,
Mrs Harrison showed us how many sugar cubes were in drinks,
Miss Tate got us to do orienteering
There was MYFOS,
we got to get a baby massage.

My favorite was the coast guard because we got taught how to tie knots, we got to wear life jackets and we got to lift someone in the stretcher. They also taught us about water safety and what to do if we find someone in the water and the said “we need to call 999 and ask for the coast guard”. We got a wee bag with stuff to do with the coast guard. As we were leaving the different stations the teachers told us where to go next.

When we were done, we had to go back into the hall and reassemble with our group. Before Mrs Mcdonald came in we got pencils and a toothbrush. I really enjoyed the afternoon.

PYROGRAPHY ENDEAVOUR

WHAT IS ENDEAVOUR?

Endeavour is when you think of something that you like doing which mine is pyrography. Everyone in p5/6/7 is doing Endeavour.

WHAT IS PYROGRAPHY?

Pyrography is when you get a soldering iron and burn art or writing on a bit of wood. Also, I’m planning on making chopping boards, coasters and ornaments for your Christmas tree or your house. Like last year I’m going to make a website but I’m going to make a website but this year I am going to sell some of my stuff on there and the rest at the Endeavour fair.

How I’m doing pyrography?

Firstly, I cut bits of wood the day before and put them on a heater to dry. Then I find an image I want to use, then trace it on to tracing paper, and then go over it again quite hard to get led on it. When you have done that put the side you just did and put it on the wood and shade the other side. It should be on the wood. I normally go over it again to make sure I can see the lines. As I’m waiting for the soldering iron to heat up I find bits on the wood that are going to be easy to do or hard to do and how I’m going to do it. When you are doing it pull the soldering iron towards you to make it easier.

Achievements?

What I plan to achieve is make items to sell at the fair and to get better at pyrography I want to make a website to sell some of my stuff on I want to make coasters, chopping boards and decorations.

P5/6/7 Swimming Trips

Every Wednesday P5/6/7 go to the swimming pool to get lessons with Miss Northcote. There are 3 different swimming groups. Group 1 are people who know how to swim but don’t go to dolphins. Group 2 are the people who know how to swim well and go to dolphins. Group 3 are people who are not confident swimmers or don’t know how to swim.

In the 1st group we practicing different strokes like front crawl, back-stroke butterfly and sculling. In group 2 they practiced breast-stroke and back-stroke. Group 3 practiced front crawl and back-stroke. Living on an island it is very important to learn how to swim.

Rock pooling

On Wednesday 7th of September p5/6/7 went rock pooling over the Ard to the Swan’s pool for our classification topic.

We caught sea creatures; so we caught multiple crabs, a jelly fish, some shrimp, fish, and a huge fish skeleton.

After that we got seaweeds and the animals we found and identified them using classification keys because we kept them in trays with water in them. The multiple seaweeds were all different colours, shapes and sizes.

After we let them go and walked back over the Ard and went back to school.

P7 TRIP

As part of their transition activities, P7 went on the bus to Bowmore to do orienteering with other P7s.

The course was in the high school playground and the football pitch. You would get a map and a compass to find a thing that snips your map and it makes a shape.

At the end we were talking and playing on the grass and then went on the bus and went back to the school.

Our Glenastle Distillery

In school we have been making distillery’s. My distillery group was called Glenastle. The different jobs are; manager which is William; casks and ageing which is Jack; Jacob is the still man and Teddy is the malting and peat. Our distillery its sited on Glenastle because there is 2 locks for water and the bottle is like a triangle shape so it can be packaged easy. The disadvantages is the roads are dirt tracks and the ground is not level so you have to level it or the distillery will be squint. We designed our own drinks and made the distilleries as models. We will be presenting to parents so they can see what we have learned.

BREAKFAST CLUB

Every Thursday our school does breakfast. We have lots of yummy food like scrambled eggs and sausages and pancakes. We use my honey fresh from my bee hives. Sometimes we have cereal. It is very healthy and we get to chat as we eat. Thanks to all the staff who do breakfast club!

Arkdefo

On Wednesday p5/6/7 & p2/3/4 had a google meet with Arkdefo to show us how they make their items of clothing with denim. They came on because p5/6/7 made bags from old clothes we brought in. We had asked them questions about how they made the clothes and if they hand sewed anything. All of there stuff is machine sewed.

All of there fabric they go to peoples houses and ask if they have any denim or they go to charity shops for denim or you could post them. Some the they make the pattern and then stick it to cardboard.

Cutting skills

In school we were cutting different foods. One of them was potatoes and we were watching videos of the different cuts which were the bridge and the claw grip and peeling. Be careful because peeler is sharp! Some people made chips by cutting the potatoes in a an angle and we also made mash potatoes so we used a peeler and peeled the potatoes and then used the bridge grip to cut them in two.
