Barcaldine Primary school children were invited along to Sutherland’s Grove on Tuesday afternoon to help plant Coastal Red Woods trees.
The weather was a bit wet to start but it soon dried up and the children along with Forestry Commission Scotland Craftsmen’s Peter MacArthur and Rory Maclean spent a couple of hours planting trees.
Barcaldine Primary School recently went along to Tesco in Oban to take part in their Farm to Food workshop.
The school children were met by Nicola Robertson who was wearing a lovely, bright yellow apron – certainly a beacon to follow because Tesco is huge!
Barcaldine Primary School hosted a Visions, Values and Aims Day whilst tying it in with Fairtrade.
We invited parents and guardians of the children as well as members of the local community so that they could come together and discuss the visions, values and aims of Barcaldine Primary School. The children partnered up with adults and voiced their opinions alongside their parents. Barcaldine Primary School’s interdisciplinary topic for this term is The Victorians.
After all our research into the Victorian era it seemed a good idea to go long to visit the Victorian School in Scotland Street, Glasgow. The children got a chance to walk around the museum and see where the children went to class, where they played and even noticed the outside loo – thank goodness we had modern ones inside the museum! The pupils from Barcaldine Primary School were invited to attend the ‘Raising Attainment’ Conference on Monday 10th March 2014. The very enthusiastic class were delighted to have been asked to display the work they have been doing with their iPads in the classroom and how technology has become part of every lesson they have. The pupils were asked lots of questions by the visitors to their stall and they were able to answer very confidently and clearly. Maggie Irving held a workshop and the pupils were delighted to have been asked to assist her. They showed a number of people who attended the workshop how they could use iPads to promote literacy learning and how much they enjoy learning in this way.
At Barcaldine Primary School recently the P6/7 children very kindly (with the help of the staff) cooked several Chinese recipes one lovely Friday afternoon. On the day we got to sample prawn crackers and egg fried rice with chicken chow mein, sweet & sour chicken and chicken curry. Everybody got to try it all and there was definitely a difference of opinion as there was no clear winner! Thank you too to Annie who brought in birthday cake so we were all rolled out the school that day!!!
P7 Pupil council members from 3 schools in the Oban area have formed committee and are now in the process of organising a day of Burns for children in the local area.
Children from Barcaldine, Rockfield and Kilninver have followed the same basic format as last year. They have been involved in the practical tasks that setting up an event for 200 children involves including booking a theatre group, hiring the venue, ordering medals, designing certificates and making rosettes for the event.
A huge thank you to everyne who supported the pupils in Barcaldine during their Nativity performance of ‘A Christmas Code’ in St. Modan’s Church last week. Parents, Grandparents and friends really enjoyed watching the children’s peformance and we raised £50 for Breast Cancer UK.
Our plum tree had its very first harvest this year. There was loads and we were unsure what to do with our plums! It was decided that we would try to make plum jam for an event that we planned to participate in. Unfortunately the event was cancelled due to the weather conditions but that didn’t matter because our jam was a resounding success – much to the astonishment of staff!! The children all helped by picking, cleaning, cutting and cooking the plums and one Friday morning we had the pleasure of tasting our successful jam. Toast all round for playtime snack – yum yum!!!
Shinty Medal
Fergus Taylor came in showing off yet another medal!!
Fergus has recently joined the newly formed Shinty Team in Appin and last Sunday 22nd September he joined the rest of his team mates to participate in the Shinty Tournament at Mossfield Park in Oban.

Smiling faces all round this morning when three boys arrived with their medals to school this morning. Well done to Ewan MacPherson and Fergus and Callan Taylor for participating in The Dalriada Tournament on Sunday 29th September. The boys from Barcaldine Primary School travelled to the Isle of Mull yesterday as part of the Taynuilt’s Rugby team – Etive Vikings. The boys played very well and got 1st place.

Over the last few months Sam Harrison of Open Ground has been working with several schools on making outdoor films. The project involved children exploring their own habitat and then when back in the classroom decide how to make and produce their own film. Sam Harrison joined each school for two days when one day was spent exploring their own landscapes and then acting out their ideas. When Sam Harrison came back for his second visit, schools then had an idea of where their film was going and all Sam had to do was film it. Continue reading Barcaldine & Ardchattan win an Oscar!
Our topic for this term was Australia and it seemed fitting that we finish off the term with an Aussie day!! We were all prepared with our Aussie style hats (corks and all!!), green and yellow colours, several boomerangs as well as a didgeridoo.
Parent Council members kindly offered to make us our lunch – Australian style!! We had a variety of meats cooking on the BBQ with salads and rolls to go along with them. We finished off our lunch with ice-cream cones with an Australian flag instead of a flake!!

There was dancing in the streets of Bonawe on Monday when Argyll’s newest Samba Band made their debut public performance!
After six weeks of hard work and fun with Samba instructor Stephen MacNally, the twelve Primary 5, 6 and 7 pupils of Ardchattan and Barcaldine Primary Schools had become adept players of the suerdo drum, tambourim, agogo bells and shaker.

Mrs Morrison was delighted (and embarrassed) yesterday when she was presented with a lovely bouquet of flowers and cards for her retirement. The North Lorn Schools Co-op Head Teachers (Strath of Appin, Lismore and Ardchattan) yesterday thanked her for all your support and contribution to the smooth running of all our combined activities that we have all taken part in.
Mrs Morrison, Head Teacher is retiring from Barcaldine Primary School this summer.
We wish her well in all her new endeavours!!
Fergus Taylor of Barcaldine Primary School came in smiling from ear to ear this morning. He was showing everyone his medal and trophy that he got from the Taynuilt Rugby Club’s Fun night on Wednesday evening.

Barcaldine Primary School children were full of questions for the two Malawian Rice Farmers when they visited the area recently. These farmers are here to promote Kilombero rice to become a Fairtrade product.
Barcaldine Primary have recently started working towards becoming a Fairtrade School and this easily tied in with our learning on how to achieve that.
Barcaldine Primary School came 1st in Scotland in this year’s Big Pedal 2013.
Big Pedal is a virtual cycle that follows a different Sustrans route across the 15 days of the competition. The giant inter-school cycling competition ran from the 28th February until 20th March this year and Barcaldine Primary School came 1st in Scotland and 2nd overall in Britain in the Small Schools category.
Congratulations to pupils of Barcaldine Primary School for passing their recent Cycling Proficiency Tests. The children and instructor have battled through all kinds of weather every Wednesday afternoon to practise and it all paid off last week when all the children sat both their theory and practical tests. The children were presented in class with their certificates and badges.

Barcaldine Primary School went along to Sutherland’s Grove to take part in the National Clean Up Scotland initiative. The children enjoyed the glorious weather to delve into the forest in search of rubbish! We were very pleased with our fairly empty black bags – the forest was very clean!! We did manage to find one peculiar piece of rubbish as one pupil seems to do every year – a rolled piece of tin!
