Inveraray Eco Success

Inveraray Primary School was the first school in Argyll and Bute to gain Green Flag status as an Eco School back in 2003. We are pleased to share the good news that we have once again retained our Green Flag status through our Crofting and Kenyan Connections work which includes the whole school and the nursery.

Barcaldine Primary Virtual Games Winners

Barcaldine Primary School children took part alongside other rural schools in a virtual games competition organised through Active Schools.

Over a 5 week period the children, who had been split into two separate age categories (P1-3 & P6-7), did the same games each week. In the final week, each game earned the children points for their achievements.

Our P1-3 children received third place in the competition.

Road Safety Calendar Competition winner announced

lochnell-road-safety-competition-tara-heritage-crabb-2017-winnerThe whole of Lochnell Primary School were in attendance for an award presentation on Tuesday of this week when Tara Heritage-Crabb was announced as the winner of the 2017 Road Safety Calendar Competition. Tara, a P5 pupil, was very surprised but thrilled to be this year’s winner. Her brightly coloured picture, bearing the message ‘Wait till the red goes green’ was selected as the header for the 2017 calendar. Judging was again incredibly difficult for the Road Safety Unit who received 1,673 entries from 43 of our schools.

5th Green Flag!

rhu-5th-green-flagRhu Primary School remain ‘Evergreen’, as we celebrate our 5th Green Flag. Christmas came early as the pupils received the joyous news. We were congratulated on our achievements in the topics of Biodiversity and Food in the Environment. We were also commended on our on-going beach cleans, which we have extended to the play park and Ardenconnel Woods. Eco Scotland were particularly impressed by our work on anti-dog fouling which was greatly appreciated by our local residents. The pupils are busily making plans to celebrate this great achievement in the New Year and we look forward to sharing this soon.

2016 Argyll and Bute Writing Competition

CAST is happy to announce that the following young writers have won prizes in the 2016 Argyll and Bute Writing Competition, supported by Scottish Book Trust.

First – Mischief – Anna McCulloch, age 10, Lochgoilhead Primary School
Second – The Artist’s studio – Calum Ellis, P7, Dalintober, Primary School
Third – Bubble trouble – Bel van den Groenendaal, Age 10, Arinagour Primary School

Once again decisions were difficult to make, the standard of writing was superb – imagination abounds! Thanks to everyone who participated and congratulations to the winners.

Rookie Lifeguard Awards for St Columba’s Swimmers!

st-columbas-lifegaurd-award-nov-2016Some of the P7 and P6 pupils in St Columba’s Primary School, Oban, have managed to achieve the Rookie Lifeguard Bronze Award during their swimming lessons in school. With the help of fundraising by the Parent Council, all pupils from P3-P7 have an eight week swimming block every year to ensure that as many pupils as possible are competent swimmers by the time they leave primary school. Of course, none of this would be possible without the help and support of Atlantis Leisure.

Digital Leaders at St Columba’s

st-columbas-digital-award-2016Some of the pupils in St Columba’s, have been awarded the title of Digital Leaders. The school works in partnership with iTeach, an education company who supports staff and pupils to embed the use of technology into their curriculum, who have helped to train some of the pupils to ensure that they can, amongst a wide range of things, troubleshoot and create video tutorials to support other pupils and staff. Every child in the school has their own iPad that is used to support them in all areas of the curriculum and to ensure that the children in St Columba’s have the very highest standard of digital skills possible.

Minard PS Win CRNS School Challenge

minard-crns-4-conference-2016This month Minard Primary fought off stiff competition from across Scotland to win a national competition for its innovative ways of making waste go for further.
Instead of using traditional recycling methods for disposing of waste paper, pupils at Minard Primary School have been turning it into recycled paper briquettes which can then be used in the community as fuel. As a result of this ingenious idea, Minard Primary was crowned the winner of the Community Resources Network Scotland (CRNS) School Challenge Competition.

Hallowe’en at Strachur Primary and Pre-5 Auto

strachur-halloween-4-nov-2016Well we had a ball last week for Hallowe’en at school. Everyone dressed up as you can see from our pictures. Prizes were awarded to Finlay (Ghostbuster), Sophie (clown), Leo (the Joker), Morven (zombie bride), Hamish (a pumpkin) and Alleah (Spidergirl). Staff were dressed up too – even Mr Campbell our chanter tutor!

Salen Primary Star Jumper

keira-trophy-480x640P7 pupil, Keira Munro, proudly shows her shield. Keira and Toby won the O’Donnell Shield at the Pony Club Working Hunter Show for having the most points over all. Well done, Keira. You were up against older and more experienced competitors. Keira had previously managed to achieve a 2nd and two 3rds for show jumping at the Salen Show in August. GOLD SCHOOL SPORT AWARD FLAG STILL FLYING AT ARINAGOUR PRIMARY ON COLL

The award is recognition of our school’s achievements in putting physical education and sport at the heart of the school. We are committed to ensuring that there are opportunities for every pupil to engage in physical education, school sport and ultimately go on to enjoy life long participation in sport and physical activity.

Science Shed Opening and School Fair

image2Excitement was in the air at Lochdonhead Primary on Mull when the official opening took place of the school’s outdoor science laboratory by Michael Russell MSP. The laboratory was created using the £1,000 prize money that the school received as a result of winning last year’s “Our Environment” competition. Argyll and Bute Council’s Policy Lead for Education, Councillor Rory Colville said: “This is a wonderful initiative and the pupils of Lochdonhead Primary School are very worthy winners. Inverness 10k

Salen PS Inverness 10k June 30th 2016SPS Runners
Ellen and Gemma MacRae of Salen Primary School raised £570 for Cancer Research UK by running the Inverness 10k. Well done girls! You ran an amazing distance and collected a phenomenal amount of money.

They are so keen on running and sports. They also achieved a 1st and 2nd place at the Tiree Fitness Kids Event.

Isaac’s Design Success

Strachur PS Isaac fringe compLast year Isaac McAlinden from Strachur Primary entered a competition, along with the rest of his P6/7 class, to design the front cover of this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival programme. His design was shortlisted and displayed in ‘Our Dynamic Earth’ in Edinburgh over the summer. We love his design, what do you think?
