St. Joseph’s Pupils Just Keep on Winning!

Staff and pupils of St. Joseph’s Primary school in Helensburgh were delighted to welcome John Evitt of Missio to school this week, not least because he brought with him a wonderful surprise for P6 pupil Charlotte O’Hara. Way back in November of last year, John visited the school to announce the lunch of an International Competition ‘Missionary Children World Competition’ to mark 170 years of Missio in this, the Year of Faith. Missio launched this drawing competition which was open to all primary school pupils in Scotland.

Primary Schools Maths Challenge

JLB achieve Silver & Bronze awards at Primary Schools Maths Challenge.
On Friday 14th June, Sasha Barclay, P7 at John Logie Baird Primary, went to Glasgow University to be presented with a Silver Certificate for the Primary Schools Maths Challenge.
Mia Blakey, Courtney Sutherland, Stephanie McCully, Nadiyah Hassan, Alex Guy and Olivia Blenkinsop all recieved a bronze certificate for their hard work and high scores.

SPORTS DAY AT KILCREGGAN PRIMARY

Kilcreggan Primary School held its Sports Day this afternoon. The weather stayed fine and spirits were high. Parents and friends had a great afternoon with parents taking part in a race at the end of the day. The pupils were arranged into teams and progressed around a number of activities with points added up as they went along. The final two races were a relay and an obstacle course.

St Joseph’s Scoops the Double!

Two pupils from St Joseph’s Primary School in Helensburgh won both available prizes from the primary section of the Helensburgh Garelochside’s Rotary Club ‘Helensburgh Young Photographer 2013’ competition recently. All children who took part in the competition were invited to the Rosslea Hotel on the evening of Monday 10 June where the winners were announced. A number of the St Joseph’s children and their parents attended and were delighted to see Charlotte O’Hara of P6 take the runner-up prize with Hannah Thomson of P7 lifting the winning plaque. Both girls and their parents were delighted!

Snapberry Project

Lochgilphead High School have had two exciting developments for their Snapberry project in recent weeks.

Kilmartin House Museum has asked to display and sell a selection of the students’ images from the last five years. The photos are on display at the Museum and monies raised will help the students support the work of Lochgilphead’s ARMS centre. Continue reading Snapberry Project

Rothesay Primary winners dine with style.

On Friday 7th June, Primary 6 of Rothesay Primary School were in for a treat when we were served a delicious lunch made by the wonderful school kitchen at the joint campus. We had won a menu competition as part of the eatBute festival last month/ the competition was judged by Jeremy Lee, presented of the Great British Menu. Let The Battle Begin!

It was no ordinary Sports Day at Sandbank Primary as this year the children took part in a Highland Games competing in their Clans. The opening ceremony got the Games off to a great start. Led by pipers, the Clans waved their banners as they sang and marched to Highland Cathedral.
Then it was off to the competitions which included various running and jumping events, hammer throwing, shot put and of course tossing the caber!

GARELOCHHEAD PRIMARY SCHOOL – Awesome Ardroy Adventures!!

Last week pupils from Garelochhead Primary went to Ardroy Outdoor Education centre, Lochgoilhhead for a residential trip.

Working towards their ‘John Muir’ award, they focussed on the adventurous discovery and exploration of wild places, and actively conserved areas of woodland.
Other outdoor activities included gorge walking, abseiling, night orienteering and negotiating their way through a labyrinth.

Duke of Edinburgh

Three pupils from Campbeltown Grammar School recently completed an overnight camp in preparation for the completion of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) Award. Jo Chinn, Liam MacCallum and Alice Morton hiked part of the Kintyre Way and camped overnight at Bordadubh. They experienced every kind of weather – snow, sun and gales on their hike!

Barcaldine Pupils pass Cycling Proficiency Test

Congratulations to pupils of Barcaldine Primary School for passing their recent Cycling Proficiency Tests. The children and instructor have battled through all kinds of weather every Wednesday afternoon to practise and it all paid off last week when all the children sat both their theory and practical tests. The children were presented in class with their certificates and badges.

Well done girls and boys!!

Cottage Kindergarten

The Cottage Kindergarten, Helensburgh has been nominated for an award in the Numeracy Across Learning category of this year’s Scottish Education Awards.

Helen Baynham (Manager) has advised that they are very excited and are taking three staff and two of their pre-school children to the awards ceremony on Monday 10th June at the Hilton in Glasgow.

JUNIOR SALTIRE AWARDS FINALISTS

Primary 6/7 at Port Ellen were learning about renewable energy and wave power and decided that we would make wave power devices for the Junior Saltire Awards. These awards are open to schools around Scotland who want to design and build their own wave powered electricity generating devices. As we already have lots of Marine renewables on Islay, with the Limpet in Portnahaven and the new tidal generator planned for the sound of Jura, we thought we should have a go.

LOCHGILPHEAD HIGH SCHOOL – BADMINTON SCOTLAND SCHOOL OF THE MONTH

On Thursday the 2nd May, John Shearer of Badminton Scotland came to the Joint Campus to present the High School with the ‘School of the Month’ award for April 2013. Jillian Gibson, Active Schools Co-ordinator, nominated the High School largely due to the success of the after school club which ‘is the most popular club currently running at the school, with over 30 pupils attending each week.’

“Lochgilphead Brass Band”

Argyll Brass is a band started up by Mr Tarn in January last year. The band is made up of primary 7’s to S5’s: Fiona cupples, Matthew Tanner, Gavin Johnson, Amy Lockhart, Eilish Malcolm, Carys Macpherson,Sean Doogan, Fergus Langlands, Sam Barker, Hollie MacGregor,Eden Mikula, Alister Cupples, Sinead Pow and Freya Corner and pupils from other schools. Lochgilphead Young Enterprise Team

Over the last year, Lochgilphead High School’s Young Enterprise team has created T-shirts designed by themselves, and have excelled in selling the product to fellow school pupils and peers. The team was automatically entered in the area finals which took place on the 23 of April at Inveraray, directly competing against other schools.

Miss Boyd receives a Blue Peter Badge

It is not unusual for teaching and support staff to receive letters of praise and thanks from the pupils at St Joseph’s in Helensburgh – the ethos and pastoral care is almost palpable and many who visit us often comment as much. Everyone’s a winner and the children greatly appreciate the staff. However, so impressed with her teacher was Isobel in P7 that she wrote to Blue Peter to ask for Miss Boyd to be given a Blue Peter badge because, as Isobel said, ‘Miss Boyd is just great!’.
