Three senior physics students at Dunoon Grammar School enjoyed success in the first round of the West of Scotland Physics Education Group competition.
S5 pupils Rowan Oxland, Peter Swift and Scott Morton worked on a number of University standard physics experiments before putting their knowledge to the test in a series of quiz style tasks.

Barcaldine Primary School have won a total of 11 firsts, 11 seconds and 9 third prizes at two local horticultural shows at Benderloch and Connel, over the past weekends. They put on fine displays of vegetables, flowers, baking, arts and crafts. The pupils are delighted to be the first primary school to win the Duncan MacPherson Trophy for a selection of mixed vegetables. Many thanks to Marion Fisher for all her hard work gardening with us.
Today we were handing out commonwealth passport medals at Cardross Primary for pupils who completed lots of Commonwealth sports.
After months of sowing, weeding, transplanting, weeding, watering and weeding (!) Rothesay Primary were delighted to have some fine produce for the Rothesay Horticultural Society Show. We carefully choose our best fruit and veg and got them ready for the show bench. We entered two varieties of tomato, black grapes, peppers, yellow courgette, runner beans, peas, curly kale, pears, rhubarb, onions, carrots and a whopping marrow!
Dervaig Primary pupils successfully grew onions and peas in their raised beds area this year and were delighted to win a 1st for the peas and a 3rd for the onions at the Tobermory Horticultural Show on Saturday 23 August 2014. The pupils are now looking forward to making a large pot of soup with the rest of their produce. They also won a 1st and 2nd in the photographic category, and a 3rd for a commonwealth painting.
Each year the Trust for Sustainable Living organises a global essay competition, which this year invited schoolchildren to outline their ideas for sustainable living and the steps needed for societies to achieve them. This year 73 countries participated and essays were received from 1,094 children. We had several finalists from Port Ellen and in July Asher travelled down to Oxford to attend the international schools debate, which was attended by children from 23 countries.

The competition is open to all primary schools within Argyll & Bute and entries are invited from second level pupils. 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners will receive books and the winner’s school will receive £250 worth of various early, first and second level books. Click HERE for the information PDF.
As part of the Scottish Government’s Legacy Gift initiative, Education Scotland was allocated 1000 Games tickets to distribute to children and young people who had engaged with the Game On Scotland programme, as part of the Commonwealth Games.
Schools were invited to apply for tickets by completing a survey about activities held in conjunction with the Game On website and Commonwealth Games, to be put in the ballot for a chance to win 10 tickets for sporting Games tickets.

Congratulations to Cardross Primary school who won the ‘judges choice award’ at this year’s UK Kodu Kup final. Cardross is the first Scottish school to be invited to the UK final and they certainly represented Scotland well! The pupils competed against 11 other schools from across the UK at Microsoft’s HQ in Reading.
To give a sense of the scale of their achievement, Microsoft estimates that 380,000 students have used Kodu in the UK this year. Microsoft said “…the quality of the 160 games that were entered into the competition was outstanding and your games were voted the best by our judging panel.”
Cardross primary were delighted to scoop the Christian aid trophies in both football and netball this year. Both teams faced stiff competition from Colgrain and their respective finals. The events were well organised and the pupils enjoyed taking part. Well done to all involved!
Kintyre Care Home, Campbeltown recently held their Open Day and asked Pre-5 to P3 pupils to design posters depicting a sporting event. Fraser from P2/1 in Dalintober’s drawing of Wimbledon won a prize. Pictured with Fraser are some of the staff and residents from Kintyre Care Home.
When our P1-3 pupils at Strone Primary School attended the Scottish Book Trust Awards in Glasgow earlier this year, our school was entered into a competition to win an original illustration from one of the nominated books, and to our surprise and excitement we won! Here are some of our P1-4 class showing off the prize. The illustration is by Ben Cort, from the book Jumblebum by Chae Strathie, one of the pupils’ favourite reads.
South Kintyre primary schools’ annual Primary 7 relay took place yesterday at Campbeltown Grammar School Sports Day. Teams from Dalintober PS and Castlehill PS participated and Dalintober ‘A’ team were delighted to come first, with their ‘B’ team coming a very close third, behind Castlehill ‘A’.
On Thursday 19th June we held our very own Commonwealth Games in fantastic sunshine at Grahams Point, hugely supported by our parents, carers, families and the local community. The four house teams each chose a Commonwealth country and made flags, decorated t-shirts, and made food to represent their country, which added to the carnival atmosphere. The winning team were Trinidad and Tobago and all the pupils received a medal for their efforts on the day.

Joint sports day at Minard
The children at Minard and Furnace Primaries enjoyed a lovely afternoon of sporting activities at Minard Primary school on Wednesday the 18th. Organised by our PE teacher, Mrs Floyd, the children were split into four teams and took part in a variety of events including ‘Jimmygymnastics’ ‘water archery’ and the space hopper relay!
On the 4th of June some of the learning centre pupils of Dunoon Grammar school went to Scottish Disability Sports Athletics event at Grangemouth. We won 4 medals, 3 bronze medals and 1 gold medal. After a long day running we were all really sleepy, some of us had a sleep on the bus! We met lots of other kids from different schools in Scotland.

Pupils at Cardross Primary School were delighted to learn that 2 groups of budding computer programmers have been selected to attend the Scottish Kodu Kup final next week. The final 10 teams will meet at West College Scotland, Paisley Campus on Monday 16th July. The finalists will have the opportunity to work on their games before presenting their game and concept to the panel of judges.

The Rolls Royce Science Project, ‘If You Go Down In The Woods Today’, has definitely inspired a number of children in the school. None more so than 3 Primary 7s, Leonie Cuddahy, Ewan McIntosh and Scott Stewart, who decided to write to Blue Peter and tell them what they had been up to over the course of the last year.
Successful Scent-Citizens
‘Scent-Citizens’, a social enterprise business run by P4/5 in Port Ellen Primary School, has been presented with a Social Enterprise Academy Award by John Swinney, Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth.
Ben, Kelci and Rebecca, P7 pupils at John Logie Baird Primary recently collected their prize for the annual Schools Maths Challenge run by Strathclyde University. The pupils all received a Silver Certificate and mug for their high scores in the problem solving challenge at Strathclyde University. The event also had their brains working – the had many challenges to complete which were very thought provoking – even for the adults present!
