Primary 7s at St. Mun’s Show Off Their Inventions

St Muns STEM  1The pupils of St. Mun’s Primary have just completed their designs ahead of the deadline for the Scottish Engineering Leaders Award for STEM 2014/15. The Awards challenged Primary and Secondary school pupils across Scotland to research and interview inspiring engineers, providing them with a fantastic opportunity to engage with real engineers who could convey the importance of STEM in their daily working lives.

Oban High’s XL Group

OHS XL Club 1Pupils from Oban High’s XL Group have been working in the Community Garden at Glencruitten run by H2O. They have been building planters to help disabled people access planting and benches for people to sit and admire the gardens. They have been working towards their Community Project for XL and their Dynamic Youth Awards for helping others in the community.

Rothesay Joint Campus raise £1320.62 for Comic Relief

RJC Red Nose Day 13Everyone at Rothesay Joint Campus took part in a host of events on Friday to raise money for Red Nose Day. In the Primary, P6-7 and P7 organised various activities including ‘red nose and spoon’ races, beat the goalie, face painting, hair/nail salon, dress-up karaoke, cupcake decorating, ‘red nose’ treasure hunts, sponge the teacher and a power hoop challenge. Red noses were sold throughout the school.

Holocaust Memorial Day at Tobermory High School

Tobemrory Holocaust Memorial Day 2Holocaust Memorial Day took place on Tuesday 27 January. This world-wide event remembers not only the victims of the Holocaust but commemorates those killed in the genocides in Bosnia, Cambodia, Rwanda and Darfur.

S3 worked in RME to plan a memorial in Tobermory High School. The gym was transformed by displays, lights, music and candles to become a temporary Holocaust Memorial. Display boards gave information on the genocides and Holocaust. Continue reading Holocaust Memorial Day at Tobermory High School

Tobermory on Trial!

Tobermory Trial 2As part of their learning on Crime and Punishment, S3 Social Subjects pupils from Tobermory, recently took part in a mock trial. The canteen was set up like an authentic court room and everyone in the class had a role to play; from prosecution and defence lawyers, to the usher and court clerk. We even had our own court artists and a representative from the press. In the end, and after some convincing arguments, the defendant was found “not guilty” by the jury.

Kelvingrove visit from Rothesay academy Art dept

Rothesay Joint Campus Kelvingrove group photo 1Rothesay Academy Pupils Visit Kelvingrove Art Gallery On Monday the 19th of January S3 and S4 Art and Design students from Rothesay Academy visited the Kelvingrove Art Galleries in Glasgow. It was a fantastic day out taking in the splendour of one of Glasgow’s most magnificent and best loved buildings bathed, as it was, in glorious winter sunshine!

Dalintober P5 Oxfam ‘Bring and Buy’ Sale

P5 pupils at Dalintober PS held their annual Oxfam ‘Bring and Buy’ Sale last week and raised over £300. The class sold goods and acted as personal shoppers for the younger children. One of the highlights was the nail bar that parent helpers and Campbeltown Grammar School pupils helped with.

Rich World, Poor World at Tobermory High School.

S1/2 spent the day considering the topic of”Rich World, Poor World” in their latest RME conference. Over the morning they looked at some of the issues facing those in the world today. They started by dividing the world’s wealth between them (some had a lot more than others) and considered some of the factors which determine whether or not you have enough to eat. The group explored human rights and made a quilt to illustrate them . Paper chains were created to show what barriers there are for some and how these could be broken.

ROTARY CLUB YOUNG MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR

On the evening of Thursday 4th December, Bute Rotary Club held its “Young Musician of the Year” competition. We are delighted that two pupils from Rothesay Academy won their respective categories. S3 pupil, Layla Templeton won the vocal section after performing two well-known songs: “Ae fond kiss” and Abba’s “Thank you for the Music”. Meanwhile S5 pupil, Michael Sweeney won the instrumental category for saxophone. Michael’s chosen pieces were “Myopic Mice” and “Strimpellata”. We wish both our musicians well for the next stage of the contest.

World Aids Day

Pupils at Lochgilphead High School were exceptionally fortunate to welcome Katrina Mitchell from Waverley Care into school to provide HIV awareness sessions on December 1st, World Aids Day.
Katrina is a very experienced trainer and facilitator who has been involved in developing materials relating to Sexual Health and Awareness that are used across Argyll and Bute. ALL SET FOR STRASBOURG!

Following a competitive selection process, S6 Rothesay Academy School Captain, Marjorie Hogarth has gained a place on the prestigious Euroscola visit to Strasbourg and the European Parliament in March 2015. Marjorie will spend a week in Strasbourg and will have the opportunity to attend multilingual presentations in the parliament building alongside students from other European countries. In addition to attending debates, the students will have the opportunity to vote on European issues and gain a deeper insight into topical issues. For Marjorie who has been offered a place at university to study French this is a wonderful opportunity to develop her language skills and prepare for her future studies.

Tobermory High School celebrated Book Week Scotland

Tobermory High School celebrated Book Week Scotland with a range of quirky, paper-related, activities. S1 used old books to create a stylish ‘Dress for a Booklover.’ Meanwhile, over the course of the week, the decking area was transformed to a wintry Narnia. Students tried their hands at origami and cake frosting, and primary pupils joined the Lady in the Green Kirtle for a storytelling session. Back in class, S6 students took some of their favourite books into primary. They talked about what they liked to read when they were in P7, and demonstrated that no-one is too old to enjoy a story, especially when it involves audience participation!

ROBERT’S CAP CALL FOR SCOTLAND

Dunoon Grammar School pupil Robert Miller receives a call-up to the Scotland National Disabilities Senior Squad. Dunoon Grammar School’s Robert Miller is preparing himself to take on this best footballers in the world, having gained his first ever call-up to Scotland’s National Disability Senior Squad. Robert, who had previously played for the Development Squad received the all-important letter on November 7 informing him of his inclusion in the senior squad. Charity boxes from Lochgilphead.

Lochgilphead High School 5/6 PDA gave 19 shoe boxes to charity. They chose a variety of age groups and collected items to fill the shoe boxes. Well done to Lorne Harvey, Nicola Ellis, Ben McGlyn, Lewis King, David Hatton and special thanks to Ewen White, Margaret Morrison from NHS Highland and Raymond Flanagan from Youth Services for their help. Maths Guest Speaker Visit

As part of Dunoon Grammar School’s aim to improve attainment and to promote mathematics as a subject that provides enjoyment, a guest speaker, Professor Adam McBride OBE visited Dunoon Grammar School today in order to give a series of talks to selected S1, S3 and Senior pupils. Professor McBride, having taught at the University of Strathclyde for over forty years, has recently retired but still visits schools around the country. He has given countless lectures and masterclasses to pupils from P6 upwards. In 1999 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and was awarded an OBE for services to the understanding of mathematics in schools. Today’s talks generated interest and involvement from pupils and were well received.  Problems that have remained unsolved in the maths community were explained along with the importance of maths in everyday life and possible future careers.

Scottish Cup winner Kara Called Up for West of Scotland.

Kara Chalmers an S2 pupil from DGS has been chosen to play for the West of Scotland U15 girls football team. Kara, who is a member of the U13s Celtic side that achieved Scottish Cup success earlier this month, has been playing football for three years and was delighted with the call up to the West of Scotland squad. Kara who plays right midfield for ‘The Hoops’ was surprised when her dad received an email informing him of Kara’s inclusion in the squad – a squad that is mainly made of girls from the greater Glasgow area and who are a year older than Kara.
Kara stated: “I skimmed over the email and at first thought I had not been included in the West of Scotland squad. I was then exstatic when my dad pointed out that infact I was part of the squad! I’m just ready to get playing!”

Pupils in Dunoon Grammar School are celebrating the success of a song released to commemorate the centenary of World War 1. (see below to hear the fabulous song)
Arlene MacKechnie (15) and Abigail Pryde (17) from the Argyll and Bute school published a version of Eric Bogle’s iconic song ‘No Mans Land’ on Social Media on Remembrance Day, 11 November, 2014 – a version of the song that Eric himself has described as ‘truly truthful and emotive’.

DGS FUN RUN FUND TO BE USED TO HONOUR KARRA

On Thursday 25th September 2014, over 700 pupils and staff of Dunoon Grammar School participated in the Karra Downie charity fun run. Pupils across the school collected sponsors, Alana Scott, Claire Black, Caitie & Sam Esler and Lee Sharp all raised the most amount of money and will be receiving a medal for their efforts.

All the money raised was collected to make an exceptional total of over £9,500.
