Luing’s third green flag proudly hoisted.
Over the past two years all the pupils of Luing Primary have been working very hard towards their third green flag. They investigated the subjects: – waste minimisation, litter and water.
Three conservation aware P7 pupils from Lochnell were delighted to receive their Snow Leopard adoption pack from WWF on behalf of Lochnell School. While reading a copy of the National Geographic kids magazine the trio were shocked to discover that Snow Leopards are listed as endangered and a threatened species. After sharing the facts about the Snow Leopard with their class the pupils decided to help the Conservation Programme by raising money to adopt a Snow Leopard.
Thanks to all those who came along to our Fairtrade Tea Party at the school on Friday. There was lovely tea and coffee and some great banana loaf, curtesy of Anne MacKenzie, along with a few other fairtrade nibbles. We are very proud to say that £45.53 was raised on the day which has been passed to the Oban and Lorn Fairtrade Steering Group.
Dalintober Primary School received a second Green Flag from Eco-Schools Scotland for their work on sustainable education and making eco links within the community.
The school has been very lucky to have been granted an allotment site by ACHA in New Parliament Place and the Eco-Group and Committee have spent a lot of time and effort in working on the allotment and growing their own produce. This has been made even more enjoyable with the help of Mr Chris Holden and Mr Ryan Malone from Campbeltown Community Organic Garden.

Primary 1 and Primary 2/1 turned their classrooms into Tartan Tearooms as part of JLB’s Burns Day celebrations. This enterprise involved the children writing a list of everything they would need to run a tearoom in their classes, making posters to advertise the event and making tickets to sell to everyone in the school. The uptake of tickets was very positive and almost every child and many adults in our school visited the Tartan Tearooms. Continue reading Tartan Tearooms at John Logie Baird Primary

Primary seven pupils at Rothesay Primary School stood up in front of seven fierce dragons on Friday in the school’s own version of the Dragon’s Den TV series.
Pitches for a series of fantastic inventions were put before the seven Dragons, who had the unenviable task of choosing between the spider-catching Zapatron, a heated sofa and a jacket that charges your mobile phone as you walk, to name just a few. The Dragons comprised a combination of current and retired Bute businessmen, plus the minister of Ardbeg Baptist Church. Continue reading P7 Dragons’ Den event in Rothesay Primary

Great excitement and extra magic engulfed Dunoon Primary School today as all pupils and staff were enchanted by the thought of raising much needed school funds through having a Harry Potter Day at school. Everyone made a huge effort to come to school as a character from one of the famous JK Rowling novels.
Both XL Groups in 3rd year at Oban High School have recently worked together in planning and organising a Coffee Morning for the welcoming of our American visitors. As this is the 20th year of the Oban/Laurinburg exchange they wanted to make it special. The group worked together in ensuring that the Americans first impression of Oban High School was as warm and friendly as possible.
Dalintober Primary Schools’ Eco-Group and Committee planned a brilliant Green Day recently to raise funds for our Eco-School projects, with the help of Mrs McSporran and Miss Brown. We all had to wear green. Each class made a product for a stall and there was a cake raffle for a lovely cake made by one of our dinner ladies, Mrs McLatchie. The dinner ladies also made a special lunch including green custard!
Seeing a gap in the market, Primary 3 & 4, along with their teacher Mrs Carmichael, from Tobermory High School decided to embark on an enterprising interdisciplinary project and write their very own Mull & Iona Activity Book. This was designed for locals as well as visiting children to buy when they come to the Island. The full colour book is very informative and contains lots of fun activities for children to enjoy. It tells the reader many facts about the island they are visiting, including the history and wildlife of Mull as well as key events going on throughout the year. This term in P5/6/7 we have been using our investigation time to research different careers. We grouped up and chose a career to investigate; these included actress, dancer, helicopter pilot, firefighter, paleontologist, nurse and vet to name a few. We found information from the internet, from various books in our school library and some of us even interviewed people who have that job. All this was to hold a Careers Fair for the whole school; this was when we set up stalls around the hall and presented our information in the form of posters and leaflets, and handed out a few stickers and badges as well. In S1, pupils’ placements varied from the Fire and Rescue Service to Scottish Water, and included hotel work, fish farming, agriculture, office work and Mundells. In S2, pupils worked with cars, Cal Mac, shops, primary schools, catering and hair-dressing – to name but a few. Continue reading Tarbert Academy S1/2 Work Experience/Enterprise Project
The children at Kilmartin Primary School recently helped raise money for the Blytheswood Trust by taking their £20 Enterprise challenge. The Trust gave the P.5-7 class £20 and challenged them to turn that into a profit.
The children thought of many interesting ideas but finally decided to bake and sell flapjacks to the other children in school. They had to use their maths skills to find out how much it would cost to make the flapjacks and then calculate what price they could sell them for to ensure a good profit. Continue reading Kilmartin P.S. Take the Blytheswood Trust Challenge!
