Members of the Dalintober PS & ELC community enjoyed a very successful and busy Coffee Evening, organised by the school’s PTA. The event included a baking stall, raffles, a nail bar, ‘Hit the Target’ and refreshments. A fantastic sum of £1150 was raised on the evening. Thank you to all involved. Grandparents’ Day at Rothesay Primary Pre5
The boys and girls at Rothesay Primary Pre5 were delighted to welcome lots of grannies, grandpas, papas, grans, pops, nans and nanas to our nursery recently. As you can see, all our visitors were keen to join in the fun from painting to play dough to singing and dancing! They thought our nursery was a great place to learn and make new friends. DALINTOBER ELC, P1 AND P2 CHILDREN SPONSOR GAMBIA CHILDREN
Dalintober ELC, P1 and P2 children are going to be busy over the coming year raising funds for 3 children they have sponsored from Gambia. To start us off we had a fundraising event of ‘Beat the Goalie’ and we will be participating in monthly ‘Fun Friday’ events to raise money for Falou, Alasanna and Fatoumata who attend Jarrol Nursery in Gambia. We will continue to work in partnership with CGS4 Gambia and look forward to hearing updates on the children’s progress throughout the year. Green Fingers at Colgrain!
On Saturday 10th September, the Colgrain Community came together to spruce up the grounds of our school. Parents, children and staff worked together to tidy our willow archway, fix our bottle greenhouse, clean our pirate ship and much more! Everything is looking FANTASTIC! Salen Primary School Committees 2016-2017
At the beginning of the school year we held our elections for Sports Committee, Pupil Council and Eco-committee. The pupils have launched themselves into performing their duties and look forward to a successful year.
Eco brambling
The Eco-committee, Gill and Caroline harvested some brambles which will be used to make jam. Later in the week the whole school will get to sample the jam. We can’t wait.
An unusual helper popped up in the shape of 11 year old tortoise, Humphrey. He lives near the school and loves company.
Castlehill Primary 6 Beach Clean
Primary 6 from Castlehill Primary School took part in a beach clean with Wayne Dixon and his dog Koda.
Wayne is currently walking the coast of Britain picking litter as he goes. He hopes to complete his journey over the next 3 years.
Primary 6 worked extremely hard and in only one hour collected 16 large bin bags of rubbish, along with crates, welly boots, clothing and even a picnic bench and table!
Medieval Historians and Firemen at Furnace Primary School
Medieval Historians and Firemen – what do they have in common? Furnace Primary children have had active learning sessions from both in the last week. Why? We have been learning about different types of careers as part of our “World of Work” topic and were visited by Dr Steve Marritt from the University of Glasgow Medieval History department (complete with armour) and we visited Lochgilphead Fire Station where we had a tour from David Gilmour the Community Safety Officer.

Rosie is smart. Rosie came to our school at lunchtime. We think she is a Black Grouse.
First, she came across the football pitch. Then she jumped on the gate. After that she came and lined up with us. We hope she will come back tomorrow.

Coding at Minard and Furnace Primaries
Pupils at Minard and Furnace Primaries were very fortunate last week to have developed their coding skills through two mini-technology days led by Steven Simpson of Argyll & Bute Council. The technology days came about as a result of pupil feedback saying they were really keen to learn more about coding. Steven came along to both primaries armed with Raspberry Pi, Lego We Do 2.0 (programmable lego) and ‘Flying Spiders’ (drones). Steven also showed us how to make mini-film trailers using Ipads.

Harvest Time At St Andrew’s
Primary 3/4/5 at St Andrew’s Rothesay, have had a very busy start to Autumn. Last week, they worked on the school allotment and were amazed at the range of vegetables that had grown over the summer months: carrots, potatoes, beetroot, parsnips and the most enormous cabbages they had ever seen!

Show and Tell
Ruaridh Dalgleish of Salen Primary School captivated his classmates with a most enjoyable topic at Show and Tell. His puppy, Arlo, a Spaniel/Labrador cross, popped in to Mrs MacLean’s classroom patio accompanied by Ruaridh’s mum. The pupils enjoyed hearing all about how to care for a puppy and many speculated as to what size Arlo will be when fully grown. We can’t wait to see which guestimates are the closest.

Bookworms
Here are some of the free books Salen Primary School has received as a result of parents and pupils ordering books from Scholastic. Thank you everyone. The fiction library is looking very healthy and our keen readers are once again furnished with new material.
Marching Back to School in Style
Pupils at Kilcreggan Primary had a warm welcome back to school at the start of term. Piper Harvey Ferguson piped the pupils into school on the first day back. Primary Seven pupils led the children and staff into the building while parents watched . Primary 1 pupils were the last to enter giving parents big smiles and cheerful waves as they went.
Inverness 10k
SPS Runners
Ellen and Gemma MacRae of Salen Primary School raised £570 for Cancer Research UK by running the Inverness 10k. Well done girls! You ran an amazing distance and collected a phenomenal amount of money.
They are so keen on running and sports. They also achieved a 1st and 2nd place at the Tiree Fitness Kids Event.
Autumn Education Programmes at Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute
Root Camp is a not-for-profit social enterprise committed to changing the consumer habits of young adults in the UK. They work with 14-21 year olds, spending a week in a rural environment, dividing time between cooking in a professional kitchen and hands on experience in the fields – planting, harvesting, foraging and fishing.

Isaac’s Design Success
Last year Isaac McAlinden from Strachur Primary entered a competition, along with the rest of his P6/7 class, to design the front cover of this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival programme. His design was shortlisted and displayed in ‘Our Dynamic Earth’ in Edinburgh over the summer. We love his design, what do you think?

First Harvest from Strachur Polytunnel
Pupils have been busy picking perfect potatoes, enormous cabbage and delicious cherry tomatoes from our polytunnel – all the hard work has paid off! Thank you to Mr Burke for his expertise and commitment to our school. Also thank you Mrs Speirs in the kitchen for preparing the vegetables to serve in the lunch hall.
