Hi from P7b 27.1.17

It has been another busy but exciting week in P7b!

In maths we have been working particularly hard on factions. The focus this week has been how to calculate a fraction of an amount. We have found this challenging at times but also enjoyable. As part of our number talks we have been focusing on dividing and multiplying by 10 and 100, including with decimals.

We are proud of ourselves for working hard to learn and recite a Scot’s poem. It was difficult learning the Scot’s language but we persevered and recited our poems for our peers. A particular well done to Shay Hamilton, Iain Haywood and Finlay MacDonald who represented our class at the P4-7 competition. We are proud of you!

We were lucky enough to welcome Jacob and Erin’s Grandad into our class this week. He grew up in London during WW2 and shared many of his experiences with us. It was so interesting to see how different, but similar in ways, his childhood was compared to ours.

Today we handed in our WW2 personal projects. We have worked incredibly hard on these and cannot wait to present them to our peers next week.

Well done to P7a for an excellent assembly on perseverance today!

Bon weekend!

From P7b and Miss Brown

P7b 13/1/17

This week we have spent time analysing our Scot’s poems. We have been looking up words and phrases that we are not sure of the meaning of and putting time into learning our poems.

In PE we have started a block gymnastics. With Mr Muldoon we have been doing balances and different types of rolls. With Miss Brown we have been working together to do partner and group balances.

At home we have been working incredibly hard on our WW2 personal projects. These are due on Friday 27th January.

In maths, we had a little maths assessment on mental multiplication and division to help us see how much progress we have made.

Our value of the month is perseverance and we took part in a reflective spaces workshop with Darren. This allowed us to reflect on this value and think about times where we have had to show perseverance. We took part in activities such as puzzles, building a card stack and writing letters to a friend to encourage them to not give up and try their best.

As part of our WW2 topic, we have been making gas masks and learning more about rationing. We have also been exploring how Jewish people were treated during WW2 and what laws were made that impacted their lives.

Bon weekend.

A week in P7b 9/12/16

We have been working incredibly hard on our assembly. We were split into five different groups; the video group, Sainsbury’s advert group, the Christmas story group, the powerpoint group and the Love potion group. Miss Brown gave us the responsibility to write and lead our own assembly. It was therefore our job to write scripts, make the powerpoint and create a video.

In maths we are coming to the end of multiplication and are looking forward to starting division. We reflected on how confident we now feel with multiplying larger numbers and what strategies we can use. We have also been learning about world time zones and calculating durations. In addition to this, we have been doing number talks which are helping us feel more confident with calculating calculations mentally. Please ask us more about this!

As part of our World War 2 topic we got a visit from Maureen Liddell from West Lothian Library services. She brought in WW2 items and photos. She spoke to us about how the evacuees felt and what life was like for them during that time.

In P.E Mr Mauldoon taught us how to play 5 second Dodgeball and elimanator for our warm up this week.

We are really looking forward to next week as we will be having Christmas lunch with our buddies and are going to the cinema.

Bye for now,

P7b and Miss Brown

A week with P7b! 2.12.16

This week we wrote our own letters imagining we were evacuees and were evacuated to the countryside or to the other side of the world! We all put in our best effort! It must have been hard being an evacuee in WW2.

We had a visit from the author of the Spy Quest books, Andy Briggs
Who we actually met back in P6. It was nice to see Andy again with his new book called Spy Quest:The Cursed Diamond. Andy is having a book signing this Saturday at Waterstones, Livingston Centre from 11 am.

On Thursday we had a visit from some S6 students and a science teacher from JYHS who taught us about the PH Scale and what colour acids, alkali and neutrals are. We carried out our own experiment and recorded the results. It was very fun!

Also on Thursday we had creative hour. Some of us went to choir, while Group 1 created pop art, Group 2 were doing water colours based on art by Claude Monet and Group 3 worked on detailed line drawings inspired by Joannna Basford.

We have also started preparing for our class values assembly next Friday based on the value of love. We have some great ideas and have been busy writing scripts and bringing these ideas together!

Have a good weekend,

P7b and Miss Brown

We are very proud of the swimmers in P7 this week who represented the school in gala. Well done to all!

We had our final tobacco education workshop this week. We were learning about the dangers of second hand smoking, the affects it can have on your body and about smoke free homes and zones. Ask us more about this experience!

We have had a super week celebrating World Book week. We have been very busy…
-making props inspired by Roald Dahl books
-pairing up with P3 pupils to share a story
-tuning in to authors live with Lauren Child
-exploring the First Ministers reading challenge

As part of our WW2 topic we have been learning about gas masks and wrote our own instructions on how to use one correctly.

We have begun exploring strategies for multiplying larger numbers in our heads and realise how important being confident with our times tables is!

“I really enjoyed the creative hour this week and learning about a new artist.” Imran Ali

“I loved listening to Lauren Child on Thursday and found her very inspiring!” Miss Brown

P7b 11.11.16

The House Captains launched the new house points system this week. Every pupil is working towards earning lucky coins for their house which the House Captains will collect and count each week. The winning house will get extra playtime on a Friday. You have to work incredibly hard to earn the lucky coins.

P7 led the whole school Remembrance assembly. We worked really hard this week to prepare for the assembly. We involved some teachers in the school by asking them if they could remember the names of some of their previous pupils. It showed us that most of our teachers are good at remembering – except Mr Brice!

On Wednesday Michelle from the West Lothian Drugs and Alcohol Team came in to deliver our first Tobacco Education workshop. We explored what happens to the body when you smoke and we couldn’t believe that there are about 4000-6000 chemicals in one cigarette. We also learned lots of the impact smoking has on our health and our lives.

P7 pupils had the opportunity to try out for the school football team and we are excited to say that everyone who attended will be a part of the team.

We got started with our WW2 topic and began to explore the events of WW1 and how WW2 started. As part of this we have begun to look at Judaism and had some research questions. We loved sharing our findings on Yammer and learning from each other.

In maths we have been reflecting on what we know about time and identifying areas we would like to improve. In addition to this we have been exploring mental strategies for subtraction to help us feel more confident with subtracting larger numbers.

We are looking forward to our next Tobacco Education workshop next week and the Primary 6 ‘Children in Need’ assembly next Friday.

Bon week-end from P7b and Miss Brown

28.10.16 P7

Today most of the girls are at ‘Active Girls Day Festival’ at James Young High School to take part in lots of different activities. The rest of P7 have been working on posters to let the school know about our Remembrance assembly on Friday 11th of November.

P7a have began a new Topic on WW2 and are really looking forward to learning more. P7b will be beginning to explore this more soon.

We have been exploring the Global Goals and focusing on Goal 5, Gender Equality. We finished analysing our surveys and calculated the gender ratio to see what percentage of men and woman have influential and decision making roles in our community. We reflected on what this means and how it fits in globally.

In addition to this we have been working on newspaper articles. We have been learning how to write a great newspaper article and focusing on writing in columns, in the third person, using past tense and writing catchy headlines.

A big focus for us in maths is addition and exploring different strategies to allow us to add up larger numbers. We are feeling more confident with this already!

We are really excited about our trip to The Risk Factory next Wednesday.

Have a great weekend!

P7, Miss Gardiner and Miss Brown

P7b 7.10.16

This week was a very busy and exciting week in P7. On Monday afternoon we had boxercise aerobics for PE and we had a question and answer session about camp.

On Tuesday we started researching for our debate about Democracy and Dictatorship. We also completed a team building activity with the people who we are sharing a dorm with when we are at camp. We enjoyed our ispend activity where we learned more about comparing costs and the importance of budgeting.

Wednesday was a very exciting day for P7 because we visited James young High School and took part in The German adventure! We teamed up with pupils from Bellsquarry and S1 pupils. In the afternoon we had our Dictatorship VS Democracy debate. Both sides made excellent points and arguments.

On Thursday we did the bleep test with Mr Muldoon. Everyone tried very hard and most of the class beat their last score. Well Done! It was also National Poetry Day so we responded creatively to a chosen poem.

On Friday We had an assembly on patience, our value of the month, with Gavin from Scripture Union!

Almost everyone in P7 is going to camp and we are feeling so excited about it! Some people are having a fun week back here at school and will be helping in the infants and completing a personal project.

That’s all for now!
Goodbye from P7b and Miss Brown
