P6/7 have been learning traditional Scottish country dances! We’ve been practicing the St Bernard’s Waltz, the Canadian Barn Dance, and the Gay Gordons. It’s been great fun, and we’ve discovered just how energetic (and exhausting!) ceilidh dancing can be.
This week in P7 was packed with exciting learning experiences! We learned numeracy skills through Building Thinking Classrooms, where pupils collaborated and had fun solving challenges in creative ways. In P.E., Inveralmond CHS S6 students came to help us with our football skills! We also welcomed parents into our Open Classroom for reading, where together we explored and analysed an extract from The BFG. It was fantastic to see families engaging with literacy and sharing ideas.
This week, Primary 5 have been learning about the significance of Remembrance Day and the importance of honouring those who have served and sacrificed. Through stories, discussions, and reflection, the children have gained a deeper understanding of why we wear poppies and take time to remember.
We read The Fallen by Laurence Binyon, a moving poem that reminds us of the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for peace. The children listened thoughtfully and shared their ideas about what remembrance means to them.
To mark this special occasion, the children got creative with two beautiful poppy-themed crafts:
🌺 Cutting Craft Poppies – Using red and black paper, the children carefully cut and assembled their own poppies. This hands-on activity helped develop fine motor skills while reinforcing the symbolism of the poppy.
🌞 Suncatcher Poppies – We also made vibrant suncatcher poppies using tissue paper and clear contact sheets. These lovely creations now hang in our classroom windows, catching the light and serving as a gentle reminder of remembrance and hope.
We’re so proud of the thoughtful conversations and beautiful artwork the children have shared. It’s been a meaningful way to connect with history and express gratitude through creativity.
This morning, some of our Primary 6 and Primary 7 pupils visited Inveralmond Community High School to take part in the first North Area Football Festival of the year.
It was a special occasion — the very first time our team played together, after just two training sessions. And what a morning it turned out to be!
We played three exciting matches:
Every single player gave it their all, showing incredible determination, teamwork, and skill on the pitch. From strong passes to great goals, and brilliant support for one another, the team spirit was truly inspiring.
We are so proud of how well they represented our school — well done, team!
P6/7 learned about the importance of shelter during poverty awareness week. We looked at the materials we would include in our houses and different shelter all around the world. We listened to the alternative eco friendly stories ‘The Three Little Eco Pigs’ and Cinderella and the Carbon Foot Prince’. We created our own comic strips to retell the stories. It was lovely to welcome all our children back to Toronto after the Festive break.
P4/5 have started off their new year by reflecting on all that 2024 offered and making resolutions for the year ahead. They have set their own goals for what they would like to achieve in 2025.
For Challenge Poverty Week, P6/7 explored the ‘Cost of the School Day’. We now have an understanding of how the school day costs money for families. We discussed the things Toronto Primary School does to support families in reducing the cost of the school day.
Two Primary 5 pupils have been keen to share their knowledge of what they have been learning in class and during their own time. Here they are signing and singing the alphabet!
Primary 5 are learning about the Olympics this term. We have been following the Olympic torch’s journey so far in 2024 starting in Olympia Greece, where the ancient Olympics originated, all the way to Paris for the opening ceremony. We named ourselves after some Greek and French cities, towns and territories, and held our very own Olympic torch ceremony from Olympia-Paris, in our playground!
