Fundraising

A small group of Primary 5/6 children noticed an area of their playground which was beginning to look bit tired, and they wanted to do something to make it look a bit nicer.

The trellis arch in the playground just outside our P4 classroom was looking like it could be doing with a bit of a spruce up. So these girls got together to come up with a plan to redevelop the area. The team decided they wanted to raise funds to fix the broken panels of the trellis, paint it to make it more attractive and buy some plants to train to grow on it. To do this they decided to hold a raffle. The girls created a sensory pack for the winning ticket – they created their own sensory bottle, stress balls and mindfullness colouring book (all made by themselves), to award the winner.

Every day this week the girls have been selling tickets throughout the school and have raised a total of £32. The winning Ticket was drawn this morning and Karly (P4) was delighted with her Sensory pack.

The P5/6 pupils now plan to write to the janitor to ask for their help in fixing the panels before using their funds to buy paint, which they have asked the gardening leadership group to assist them with painting.

Well done girls, and thank you for going above and beyond to make Toronto fabulous!

Rotary Quiz

Back in March the team representing Toronto Primary beat off our local opponents and qualified to go through to the next round of the Rotary Quiz, at Murrayfield PS.

Yesterday the team headed off for the next round, all set to represent Toronto. They showed great knowledge, skill and teamwork to answer a wide variety of questions, with their favourite round being the observation round.

Although they did not win this round they have definitely done us proud by their shining example of hard work, collaboration and  dedication.

Here they are pictured with their certificate, which we will display with pride.

 

Internet Safety

The digital leaders have recently been talking about internet safety, here are are top tips for staying safe online:

  1. Never share your personal details, eg. age, where you live etc.
  2. Always have parental supervision
  3. Don’t contact anybody you don’t know
  4. Only accept friend requests from people you know
  5. Keep your logins and passwords safe and don’t let anyone know them

National Theatre Scotland

Primary 7 spent Monday of this week working with the National Theatre Scotland. The children took part in a fabulous workshop with games, music and drama. Our P7 pupils have been talking positively about this experience all week and loved every second of it. This has also given them some helpful ideas and hints as they prepare for their World War 2 class assembly in a  few weeks. We would like to thank our lovely friend of Toronto, Sandy who organised this for us. Primary 7 can’t wait to show you what they have been working on!

1+2 Languages Family Fun Afternoon

This afternoon was our first 1+2 Languages Family fun session at Toronto. We welcomed lots of children and their families. Our families showed off their super singing voices by learning and performing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in French. A definite favourite of the afternoon was the taste testing session, where everyone enjoyed foods from France, Spain and Germany – the croissants and brioche were a big hit.

We rounded off the afternoon with a European trivia quiz. We had 3 clever winning teams and each enjoyed choosing their prizes. A huge well done to all teams who took part, some of those questions were tricky!

Sharing Learning in Primary 5/6

Primary 5/6 have been working hard over the last couple of weeks and have been sharing their learning in a variety of ways.

More pupils this week shared their homework on Scotland. Their task was to bring something Scottish to share and talk about with the class. The children have enjoyed the opportunity to be creative with this homework task and have shared lots of new things. This week we had some facts about a Scottish artist, a tartan hat (Stewart Tartan), Scottish music and gigs, a Saltire flag and even some tablet to try!

During our Literacy sessions, Primary 5/6 have been making the most of the little bit of good weather we have had and taken their Spelling tasks outdoors. The pupils used chalk to practice their spelling words in the playground. This is a definite new favourite activity!

Creative Approaches to Homework

Primary 5/6 were tasked with a homework challenge this week, which allowed them to tap into their creative streak. The class were given an open ended challenge to bring with them something Scottish that they could present and talk about in class. There were no limits to what the children could work on, it was open to their interpretation allowing them choice, ownership and creativity – it could have been a piece of music they found, research steps to a Scottish dance, notes they had made about a famous Scottish person, or even a bottle of Irn Bru!

What great things Primary 5/6 brought to class this week to present!

We loved a bit of history of shortbread, the Scottish presentation tins with tartan and Scotty dogs, with one pupil using a family recipe to make delicious shortbread that they kindly shared with their peers, even Mrs Black and Mrs Gingell had to have a try.

We also had some information about a family tartan, which was enthusiastically demonstrated with props, and some fantastic research about the famous Scottish artist Steven Brown.

Digital Learning

P5/6 have been developing their knowledge of the digital wold this week, with Safer internet Day as the stimulus.

We were challenged to draw a picture of an apple and then a dog, each within 30 seconds. We could clearly see many similarities between everyone’s drawing of each of these items – shape, form, characteristics, etc. We were then given 30 seconds to draw The Internet. When comparing these pictures, we noticed there were fewer of them entered onto our board and there were very few similarities in our drawings. The apple and dog were physical items that we could see and touch, yet no one could really clearly explain what the internet actually looked like, we use it every day but it is not really a physical object that we can freely see and touch, which makes it a more abstract idea to us.

We also investigated some of the technical language that is used when working with ICT. We were able to match some technical terms with their meanings, helping us to be more aware of our roles and responsibilities when using technology.

Primary 3’s Enterprise Project – Golden Tickets

Primary 3 have been busy over the last few weeks, organising and sharing their enterprise project. The pupils and staff across the school have been supporting their project this week by taking part in their Golden Ticket event. Here are the lucky winners, looking very chuffed with their prizes.

Safer Internet Day

Tuesday was Safer Internet Day, and here at Toronto all classes took part in lessons and activities in which we were able to develop our knowledge.

Our DIgital Leaders worked with a variety of classes on a social media quiz, identifying the age individuals must be engage with a variety of social media. We were surprised by some of the age limits on these, particularly YouTube!

As the Digital Leaders were working in classes, the theme of consent and permission was a hot topic and children were able to discuss their thoughts and give opinions on this and how we can keep ourselves and others safe online.
