Sports Dress Down Day

A HUGE well done and thank you to all of our children and wonderful staff who took part in our Sport Dress Down Day yesterday. We saw many different sport stars, from footballers to gymnasts, rugby players to cyclists. Thanks to everyone’s efforts and generous donations we managed to raise a grand total of £264.70! This money will all go towards brand new sports equipment to enhance both the delivery of P.E and our after school programme activities.

Well done to P7b for confidently delivering their class assembly on Health and Wellbeing at Springfield. It was great to hear about all of the exciting things we can look forward to throughout the year. Improving our children’s health and wellbeing is a key priority this session as we look to promote successful learning through developing social, emotional, emotional and physical wellbeing. Our school is a nurturing and caring learning environment where we promote confidence and positive relationships through kindness and mutual respect. We want all of our pupils to have knowledge that will allow them to make healthy lifestyle choices now and in the future.

It was great to see both P7 classes encouraging their buddies to exercise and get active with some Zumba after P7b’s assembly. They enjoyed taking part in some guided dance to improve their coordination, gross motor skills and body awareness. Other classes across school participated in Joe Wick’s (The Body Coach) Schools Fitness Week by tuning in for a live workout each day.

Phew! Think we all need our long weekend now. Have a safe and restful one and we’ll see you all next Wednesday.

Numeracy

From our baseline assessments in Numeracy, we could see that we needed to strengthen our knowledge and understanding of Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. This week, we consolidated on previous learning by identifying basic fractions and reminded ourselves of how to use a fraction wall to find equivalence. We were able to remind Mr. Logan that the top number of a fraction is called the numerator and the bottom number is the denominator. We found out that the middle line in a mathematical calculation is called the vinculum, but is more commonly known as the division or fraction bar. Our targets have been set for Numeracy and Mathematics in Term 1 and we will revisit these before the October holidays to evaluate on our progress and identify our next steps in learning.

On Thursday, we enjoyed carrying out some mental maths and problem solving activities with Mr. Ritchie and Mr. Slater. Next week we will continue to extend our knowledge of equivalence before finding quantities of a set and adding/subtracting fractions. Soon, we will be able to establish the link from fractions to decimals and percentages.

Literacy

We are continuing to enjoy reading our class novel, Grandpa’s Great Escape. Will Jack be able to prevent his Grandpa from being banished to Twilight Towers? Will he ever realise his dream of flying the legendary Spitfire aircraft? And, will Miss Verity’s romance with the gorilla-like security guard from the Imperial War Museum continue to blossom? We shall find out next week…

In writing we have been working hard in attempting to up-level our own, and others’ work. This is when you take a piece of written work and make it more interesting and exciting for the read. We learnt that this could take the form of using ambitious examples of vocabulary (WOW words), connectives to extend and vary the length of sentences, openers to maintain the reader’s interest or the use of correct punctuation to ensure our writing makes sense. This will be one of our main focuses in writing this year, along with developing the ability to proofread and Spellcheck our work independently, using ICT to word process and edit and extending the length of our written work.

Next week we can expect to be given our new group novels which we will be studying during this term and some spelling homework. We will also have some lines to learn in preparation for our class assembly next Friday 15th September. Hope to see you all there! Remember it is also Sports Dress Down Day, so bring £1 with you to help fund some new sports equipment for school.

Next Week

  • Assembly preparations
  • Cake Fest design presentations and baking
  • P.E on Monday, no P.E on Tuesday
  • Orienteering sessions in P7
  • Sports Dress Down Day on Friday, bring £1 to fund new sport equipment

Hope everyone is having a relaxing weekend, see you all Monday.

Numeracy and mathematics

We continued with our work on decimals this week in numeracy, dividing them by 10, 100 and 1,000 and applying our prior knowledge of place value to assist us with this. Having established that when dividing, our decimal point moves to the left and when multiplying to the right, we moved on to sequence and order decimal fractions with up to 5 places after the decimal point. We were also able to multiply and divide decimals using a calculator before rounding to the nearest whole number which aided us with some work on estimation and approximation. Next week, we will be looking at percentages and real-life contexts where these may be used.

Literacy

Our literacy work this week started with the study of a shared text on The Tudor period. This period of British history is a particular interest of some pupils and we took the opportunity to discuss and annotate a passage written by Lady Marsden. In this, she reflected on Mary Queen of Scots’ execution and the array of emotions that coincided with this. We were able to effectively find examples of where she was sympathetic towards Mary, and in contrast, where she was openly critical of Queen Elizabeth I. Additionally, we identified, discussed and annotated figurative language and instances of emotive language within Lady Marsden’s recount of events. Our writing lesson this week was inspired by The Great Escape and we have been creating instructional texts detailing a plan for an escape from the prisoner-of-war camp, Stalag Luft III. Our ideas were incredibly creative and the level of detail certainly left nothing to chance. I think it’s safe to say, P7b would have managed to elude the German guards!

IDL

As of last week, we have been continuing to put together our personal projects and are making excellent progress with these. Mr. Logan cannot wait to read these; a huge amount of hard work is being put in to meet both the criteria and deadline. Both P7 classes were very lucky to have two visitors in class this week to discuss different aspects of WWII. Firstly, Mrs. Gordon’s Aunt visited us to speak about primary and secondary sources of information from WWII, highlighting the difference between the two and sharing some local stories. We also welcomed in Mr. Boiling (Andrew’s Dad) who is a college lecturer in Glasgow. He delivered a presentation on The War at Sea during WWII. P7b enjoyed hearing about the naval warfare between the two sides, and how Germany’s most powerful warship, the Bismarck, was eventually sunk in an act of vengeance ordered by Winston Churchill.

Friday

We did our best to give Mr. Logan the fright of his life as he stepped out the door this morning with our crazy and wacky hairstyles in aid of Red Nose Day and Comic Relief. As a class we brought in just over £28 and donated in addition to this through our purchases at the bake sale organised by the Pupil Council. A huge thank you to them for organising this, along with Mrs. Gordon. We celebrated another successful week in P7b, winning the Peg Challenge for the second week running and also the Class of the Week trophy. This was as a result of them moving round the school sensibly and quietly, and for sharing such a depth of knowledge relating to WWII. P7’s quality of higher order questioning was particularly impressive, and caught the attention of both our visitors to class. They demonstrated their inferential and evaluative thinking when presented with a wealth of information. Well done P7b, I am incredibly proud of you, demonstrating again what an asset and credit you are to our school. With the weather being so nice, we finished up our day with Golden Time outside. Mr. Logan’s football team missed out on victory in a well contested 5-5 draw. To be continued next week…

Next Week

  • Camp EE2 forms to be sent home on Monday and returned by Friday 31st March at the latest
  • Friendly football fixture versus Linlithgow Bridge P.S on Monday at 4:15pm
  • Bunny Bingo on Tuesday evening
  • Easter Parade and songs on Thursday
  • WWII artifacts in P7 on Thursday afternoon 1-2pm
  • Easter Assembly on Friday morning at St. Michael’s, P7 to accompany P1 buddies

Thanks again for taking the time to read our class blog, we hope you all have a lovely weekend. One week to go!

Fun and Games in P.E!

P1 – P3/4 donned their gym rubbers and put their creative hats on for P.E today.

The P1’s and P2’s continued their Better Movers and Thinkers work today, with the aim of moving and thinking in a more cohesive way. So far this year, they have been working hard to develop their kinaesthetic awareness and coordination through a variety of ball games. We have seen a huge improvement in the children’s skills over the first few months and have had lots of fun in the process!

Further up the school in P2/3, P3 and P3/4 we were designing new games and sports today, and teaching our peers how to play them. Each team worked collaboratively, communicating effectively and sharing their ideas to create an original game that could be easily taught to the rest of the class. The children took advantage of all the equipment from the P.E cupboard and came up with some amazing ideas for new games. I had to refrain from jumping in and playing them!

Well done P1-4! Have a look at the pictures from today below!
