P5B Week Commencing 5th February 2018

In Maths we have started looking at the different types of bills and how they are calculated. We have been using our addition and multiplication skills to calculate the cost of different products and services that make up different types of bills.  In addition to this we have been practicing our times tables by playing the new “Race Track” multiplication game. We were learning about durations in time in maths and we were also working on the 24 hour clock.  We found it useful to relate our work on time to every day contexts.

We have also started work on our new topic Mary Queen of Scots and have been recording information regarding what we already know about her life and work, what other information we would like to find out and the different ways we would like to learn about her. We then looked at the major events in her life and completed a time-line to cover this historical period.

Pupils had a fantastic last week at rugby, we played various games and they had mini tag rugby matches. It was also exciting walking there in the snow.

In French we have been revising our greetings and playing number games in French.

We also enjoyed watching BBC News Round this week and learning all about the new rocket that was launched into space carrying Elon Musk’s car.

Have a super February break!

Magic Train Ride (P1A)

As part of our Transport focus, this week we compared trains today and trains in the past. We looked at steam trains and we looked at trains in other countries such as the ‘Bullet’ train in Japan. We listened to a story called ‘Magic Train Ride’ and we discussed where we would go if we could go anywhere on a magic train ride (real or imaginary). In our literacy jotters, we wrote about our own magical train rides. We have been working hard to use our sounds to spell words and use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We also made our own ‘Magic Train’ pictures using oil pastels and by drawing different 2D shapes. Don’t they look great!

This week our new sounds were ‘ai’ and ‘ay’. We played a pairs game with ‘ai’ words, made an ‘ai’ graffiti wall, made ‘ai’ with play dough and practised writing ‘ai’ in a spelling activity. When learning the ‘ay’ sound, we practised writing ‘ay’ words on our whiteboards, made ‘ay’ with loose parts, wrote ‘ay’ sentences and looked for ‘ay’ words using a magnifying glass.

This week our common words were ‘are’ and ‘they’. On Friday, we revised some of the common words that we have learned over the past few weeks. We made common words graffiti walls, practised writing our common words on our whiteboards, made sentences by cutting out words, played a common words Snakes & Ladders game and played ‘Ready or Not’ on Education City.

On Thursday afternoon we went to the Community Wing hall to continue to practise and develop our motor skills. We were jumping, kicking, dribbling, running, throwing, catching and balancing.

In Numeracy and Maths we have continued to learn about pictograms. We made our own pictograms on Thursday and we answered questions about different pictograms. This week we have also been counting objects to 20 and beyond using one-to-one correspondence. We had to make sure that we didn’t miss out any objects or count any twice! We completed a transport counting activity, worked with a partner to give them different amounts to count out, counted out different amounts using loose parts and played different counting games on the smartboard.

We hope that everyone has a lovely long weekend. Thank you for reading our blog post.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

Primary 3/4 Blog Week Beginning 5.2.18

Dear All

We won class of the week!

This week in literacy we learned about adverbs and verbs. We did dictation and spelling on ‘ie’ words. We listened to our ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ class novel.

In French we learned about different food and drink including ice-cream and pizza!

In numeracy we used concrete maths materials to see links between subtraction and addition. We played fact families on the smartboard for addition and subtraction and then used Heinemann textbooks to write out our facts in numbers and symbols.

In health and wellbeing we were talking about who we trusted. We also played Gaelic football.

In learning across the curriculum we learned about the Vikings and made longboats. For Chinese New Year we made fortune tellers. In music we were learning a song in Gaelic. In NYCOS we listed to claps of a song and guessed where the claps stopped.

Lily says “we love school!” and Mark says “it was a great week!”

Hope you have a good long weekend!

In phonics we were learning the sk, sn and st blends. We found objects around the classroom to put in our sound of the day box. We found a star, skirt, snow, snail (The Snail and the Whale story). In writing we started learning about writing instructions. We looked at examples and picked out key things that they included. We learnt how to use bossy words to give an instruction. We enjoyed bossing our partners about. We then received a letter from Paddington Bear asking us for help. He didn’t know how to make his favourite sandwich so needed us to write him some instructions to talk him through it.

So we had a practise! We worked in pairs to make a Marmalade sandwich then used what we had learnt to break it down into manageable steps. We had to then write our instructions for Paddington and highlight all of the bossy words we had used.

In Maths we have been learning about time. We recapped on our months of the year and made some fabulous collages for homework. We learnt the days of the week in French….Oooo la la! We revised o’clock and half past times, looking at the positions of the different hands. On Wednesday we used paper plates to make our own clocks. We worked in pairs to make different times.

In IDL we were comparing Victorian toys to modern day toys. We learnt about toys for boys and girls. The rich children had different toys to the poorer children. On Thursday we then made our own Jack in the box. We had to fold net to make a box then fold strips of card to make a spring. It was very tricky but we did so well.

In PE we were applying our Futsal skills to mini games. We had to dribble and pass accurately. We learnt how to work as a team and how to include our team members. We also spent our PE lesson on Thursday playing some Victorian games. We had so much fun!

Here is our learning for this week…..

Enjoy your long weekend,

Miss Mudd and P2A x

P6A Weekly update

Literacy: We’ve been very busy with Literacy this week. We started our week with an active spelling task, helping us to consolidate our learning of our weekly spelling. We created spelling scribbles with all the words and spelling patterns we have learnt so far.  We focused on sequencing during our reading. We learnt about different skills that can help us to identify and understand the sequence of events. We continuing to read our class novel, The mysterious journey of Edward Tulane, our novel is reaching some interesting and grip taking moments. We have enjoyed having discussions on the chapters that we have read so far, and we really enjoying predicting what may happen next. We completed a sequence activity based on the novel, this linked well with our reading comprehension skill of sequencing that we learnt earlier in the week. For story writing this week we focused on short sentences that can create suspense. We know that when writing a story it is important to keep your reader interested, we leant that sometimes by writing short, gripping sentences, that this can keep our reader interested and wanting to read more.  You practiced to write a few short sentences that created suspense for our readers.

Numeracy and Maths.: Number talks this week was based on division. Mrs Hogg and P6B joined us during our number talk session. Mrs Hogg was very impressed with our confidence and  the variety of division strategies that were being used.  Continuing with the ‘theme’ of division. Mrs Matos introduced us to the Singapore Bar Modelling strategy. This was the first time we had heard and tried this strategy, we all agreed that this strategy could help us with word problems. Please ask us at home to share this strategy with you. We started a new topic of money this week. We started to look at different ways that payment and be made, and we discussed deals and calculated the best deals when shopping.  Make sure to take us along shopping this week, we may be able to help you find the best/ cheapest deals.

Health and Wellbeing:  Although a little colder on Tuesday afternoon, we went outside to continue practicing our hockey skills. We continued to work with a partner and practice ball control and passing, we also practiced shooting into goals. Tuesday the 6th February was internet safety day, the theme for this year was, create, connect and respect. A lot of discussion was had around this years theme, we discussed ways that the internet can be used to connect like minded people, to use the internet to create awareness and lastly to remember to respect others and their opinions.  We have created poster that we will display in our classroom to remind us of the importance of internet safety.

IDL:  Using the netbooks, we researched a Scottish Colourist of our choice, we used the information that we researched to create a PowerPoint presentation that we will present to the class later next week. Being inspired by the Scottish Colourists and their still life paintings, we started with our final sketch of a still life, later next week  we will use the different techniques that the colourists used and we will be painting our still life sketch… watch this space for our completed paintings.

Lion King: On Tuesday afternoon we did our first run through of the production with cast 1. Mrs Matos, Mrs Gordon and Mr Logan were very impressed that we were able to practice off script! The Lionesses stole the ‘show’ with their amazing singing and dancing – well done girls! On Thursday afternoon we started with some costume preparations for the Gazelles and the grasslands… Not long to go, and you really don’t want to miss out, so remember to get your tickets!

After a busy few weeks, we can get time to relax over our extended weekend. Enjoy your weekend and we will be back on Wednesday for some more fun- filled learning.

P7b Weekly Blog

Numeracy and Mathematics

We have been continuing our work on data handling this week. In doing so, we have both asked and answered questions to extract key information from varied data and displayed this by drawing pie charts and creating them using Microsoft Word. Next, we will be looking at measure through learning about area and volume. Making estimations, calculating the perimeter, calculating area using cm/m² and volume using cm/m³, using scales accurately, converting measurements and demonstrating an understanding of imperial units and how they are still used in everyday life. We have set some maths word problem challenges for the upper school and shall wait to see if anyone manages to solve them for a reward!

Literacy and English

Sam was chosen as this week’s Star Writer in P7b after he produced a superb creative piece of writing about the African savanna. Everyone worked incredibly hard on their pieces of writing and we will be peer assessing these next week using our Second Level writing criteria. This will allow us to form our own next steps and targets in writing over the coming weeks. You can now see this on our Star Writer wall, it’s well worth a read. We have been brushing up on our uses of apostrophes for both contraction and possession, and trying to implement this in our own writing. On Yammer, we thought of higher order questions which we would like to pose to members of staff from the Academy and will hopefully have these answered when they visit us ahead of transition.

Health and Wellbeing

In P.E this week, we designed our own football games that incorporated the skills we have developed so far; passing, dribbling and shooting. The children came up with some fantastic ideas and provided a clear explanation and demonstration as to how their game was played. Our focus on internet safety was geared towards online content this week. We had to assess some of the content which you may encounter online, decide on it’s appropriateness and then discuss the effect this could have on people. As a result, we are now aware of how to best respond when we come across something online which upsets us or makes us feel uncomfortable. On Thursday, we had a tour of Linlithgow Academy as part of our transition to S1. It was great to have a look around, meet some of the staff and have some burning questions answered. We look forward to our 3 transition days in June now. Finally, Lion King rehearsals have carried on this week where we have been designing and creating scenery, making costumes and having our first full run through in the hall. The main cast managed this off-script, our lionesses were fierce and our ensemble were singing beautifully throughout. Well done to all involved, and thank you to Mrs. Gordon, Mrs. Matos and Miss Prince for their continued efforts in getting us prepared!

Have a relaxing and restful long weekend everyone, it’s well deserved.

P7b’s Superstars and Mr. Logan

Primary 3

We have had a very busy week in Primary 3! In Numeracy we have been learning about money, being able to calculate change from £1 and beyond. We had great fun role playing as shop keepers and customers to consolidate what we have been learning throughout the week.

This week we were learning about Alexander Graham Bell and how he invented the telephone. The children were very interested to see how the telephone has evolved throughout the years and had a super discussion about what a phone may look like in years to come!

Last week the class had designed their own televisions for the year 2050! They were very imaginative! On Thursday we were learning about persuasive language and therefore created excellent advertising posters to help sell their televisions. Everyone did a great job!

Have a great weekend,

Mrs McVay and Primary 3

P2/3 inventors, footballers and shop keepers

This week we have been getting stuck into our new topic; Scottish inventions. We turned our kelpie cave into an inventing corner, it has been a big hit! Thank you for all of the junk modelling materials, here are some of the inventions we have designed so far:

In PE this week we have been working on our football skills, we are learning how to dribble a ball through fun games such as Robin Hood and the body parts game.

Continuing with our non fiction text focus in literacy, we found interesting facts and wrote them in full sentences. We have also been learning how to write sentences in the past tense, we know that we can add ‘ed’ to the end of a verb to do this.

In Maths we worked on giving change, using subtraction strategies such as a number line to help us. We loved setting up our own shops and practising giving change. Here are some photos of our shops:

Have a lovely long weekend,

Primary 2B

The children have been very excited this week as we started on our Victorian topic. They are all really interested and eager to learn more.  We have talked about what they already know(which is impressive) and what they want to know, again a varied and interesting selection.

We have finished our block on money and next week go on to ‘Time’.

This week we have started on our class novel – “Awful Auntie” by David Walliams and have already had lots of laughter. The children wrote a character description, using adjectives and did a super job.

The children have completed their bridge challenge and here are some photos of the results. They did need reminding that a car needs to be able to get on and off the bridge however!!
