Love to Ride Cycling September

Hi

Please see email below from Wendy from Transition Linlithgow. I have registered Springfield Primary with Love to Ride Challenge for the month of September. Please sign up and log any cycle rides long or short and see your achievements and health improving!

If you need a bike I have six that families have kindly donated to hire out for a small donation. These have been taken to the Bike Library in Livingston to repair and are now ready to go on the road or a quieter path. Please contact me at louise.mcalpine@westlothian.org.uk if you need any more information.

Kind Regards

Mrs Louise McAlpine

Hello,

My name’s Wendy and I’m emailing from Transition Linlithgow.  The reason for my email is that we are organising the Linlithgow Challenge – a fun and friendly cycle challenge happening in September that isn’t about cycling as many miles as possible, but encouraging as many people to cycle as possible for just 10 minutes or more.

Every time you log a trip in September you get entered into a draw to win one of our many great prizes (including a new bike), and anyone who encourages someone else to ride a bike also gets additional entries into the prize draw.  What’s more, community groups can take part and compete against other groups and workplaces of a similar size to see who can get the most people cycling.

Entrance and participation is completely free of charge, and for more details, and to register please go to our Linlithgow Challenge website: https://www.lovetoride.net/linlithgowchallenge

www.lovetoride.net
Love to Ride is all about getting more people enjoying and discovering how easy and fun riding a bike can be. Whether you ride all the time, or you’re new to riding, join the Love to Ride community, help grow cycling, make our neighborhoods more bike friendly, have some fun with your friends and win some great prizes.

We can also help and support your group to promote all forms of active travel (not just cycling) – and have lots of services on offer. From free personalised travel planning, to free fuel efficient driver training, to route advice, maps, car sharing, bike maintenance and more.  We also have a small fleet of electric bikes available for free hire at the end of August.

If you can share the Challenge with group members that would be brilliant – it would be great to see your group taking part in the Challenge.  If you have any problems signing up do let me know.

Additionally, if there’s any way we can help promote active travel within your group, e.g. me giving a short talk to group members about the services we offer, an e-bike taster session, to even helping to organise car-sharing to group meetings, then do let me know as I’d be delighted to help.

Kind regards,

Wendy

Showing our school values in P1B

This week we have been learning the a and t sounds. We have learnt to say, read and write our sounds. We even started to blend them together in simple words.

In Numeracy we have been learning all about the numbers 0, 1 and 2. We have been doing lots of different activities to demonstrate our understanding of these numbers.

We have been learning all about our school values. The kindness fairy sent us a letter and left us a tub of kindness for Mrs McAulay to sprinkle over the classroom. We drew special pictures to show all of the kind things we have been doing in P1 and created our own kindness tree. We even showed kindness to our buddies and made them special thank you cards as they have looked after us this week. On Thursday we were learning all about resilience and we read a story about a little boy who couldn’t ride his bike. We did a circle time activciyt and shared all of the things we have found tricky. Mrs McAulay set up some tricky activities around the class and we had to try and use to encourage each other and not give up. The P3 play leaders then came across to help us build some junk model towers. It was very tricky but everyone showed a great attitude!

Paddington arrived in our classroom this week and asked us to write him letters to tell him all about our first week in Primary 1. We took up the challenge and wrote some beautiful letters to him in our free play time.

A big well done to N and A for winning the enjoy-a-ball trophies. A great achievement and we love hearing all about achievements outside of school.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Our Primary7’s are ready for a new and challenging year ahead!

A warm welcome back to all children and families, I hope everyone managed to enjoy some family time in the sunshine over the summer holidays. It seems that our Primary 7 children were more than ready, all looking smart in their shirts and ties and full of enthusiasm for the year ahead!

We have had a very busy first week, settling into our new classroom routines. We have been spending time this week, getting to learn more about each other and learning how we can work together to make sure that we all have a successful year. Through various activities we shared our thoughts about the year ahead, we discussed some of our fears, hopes and expectations, and something that everyone is looking forward to this year, is having fun….that there will be plenty of!

We spent time this week getting our Class of 2019 Time Capsule ready, we wrote letters to our future selves, reminding ourselves of what our interests are and also what we hope to achieve in the next year, we all looking forward to opening our letters on the last day of Primary 7. We have also been using string to measure our heights, I wonder how much we would have grown over the year? Next week we will be bury our time Capsule, along with some things we have gathered over the week.

Team work is so important, we have taken part in some team building activities to remind ourselves that patience, planning, communicating and persistence is key to successful team work. Only given sellotape, 20 strands of spaghetti and a marshmallow, we had to create the tallest, free standing tower. We worked together in  groups of three. Our winning team managed to build a 30cm tall tower.

Who knew getting to know each other could be such a ‘sweet’ treat? Using Skittles, a dice and a set of questions, we played a getting to know you game with our partners, it’s amazing how little we knew about each other.

Confidence, Resilience, Kindness, Respectful and Included are all the school values that each Primary 7 learner displayed this week. Our Primary 7’s have taken on the role of buddies this year, with the Primary 1’s and they are doing a fantastic job, welcoming and including the Primary 1’s to the Springfield family!

It looks like we are going to have a fantastic year together, where we are all going to grow and develop both together and individually, I am looking forward to enjoy this journey along with Mr. Logan and both P7a and P7b.

Gymnastics Achievements!

Well done to the Gray sisters in P2 and P4 and to  U in P6 for achieving ‘Highly Commended’ in their recent gymnastics exams. We are so proud of you girls! Promoting participation in  sports and an active lifestyle is part of our Health and Wellbeing curriculum at Springfield and Bonnytoun. Please continue to keep us notified of your child’s sporting achievements.

Welcome to our new P7s, the Class of 2019

A warm welcome to our newest Primary 7s who have been settling into life at the top end of Springfield Primary School this week! It’s been a hugely positive start to term, with the children returning refreshed and ready to go in what promises to be an incredible year for them.

We’ve been getting to know each other this week in various teamwork and problem solving activities, including the spaghetti and marshmallow challenge. P7 worked in groups of 5 with only Sellotape, 20 strands of spaghetti and one marshmallow to build the highest freestanding tower possible.

We’ve also been preparing items to place in our Class of 2019 time capsule. The children wrote letters to their futures selves, noting their hopes, dreams and aspirations for the year which will be opened on the final day of term. They also measured their height with string, recorded information about themselves and took an individual photo to include in their envelopes. The time capsule will be buried in the outdoor classroom next week. It’s safe to say P7a will grow both as learners and young people throughout the coming months and we’re excited for the journey ahead.

Staff across school have showered our P7s with compliments this week as they have undertaken their first P1 Buddying duties. The children have shown a great level of maturity and responsibility, behaving in a kind, nurturing and caring manner whilst accompanying their P1 Buddies to morning breaks and lunchtimes. On Friday, we also worked with the P1s to begin developing their knowledge of and ability to use ICT more confidently.

I’m greatly looking forward to the year ahead P7a and I’m incredibly proud of your efforts this week! Keep it up!

To all of P7a’s parents, carers and families, have a lovely weekend.

P7a and Mr. Logan

A Fantastic First Week in P3B :)

What a great first week we’ve had in P3B.  It is lovely to see so many familiar faces and some new ones too – a very welcome addition to the class and everyone has settled in well.

We began the week reminding ourselves of Springfield School Values – Resilient, Kind, Confident, Included and Respectful.  The children remembered the actions well as you can see from the photo’s!  They worked in groups to design a poster showing one of the values.  They worked well together and I was very pleased with the final results. They now take pride of place at the entrance to our classroom.

As part of our outdoor learning topic ‘trees’, and to allow us to finish off the tree we have in our reading corner, we went outside to do a leaf identification task. We then brought the leaves inside and learned a bit more about why trees need leaves.  We looked at them very carefully through magnifying glasses to see all the parts close up.  Then we did line drawings and hung them on our tree.  Our classroom tree is now looking great 🙂 A nice quiet corner for us.

We have been enjoying our class novel ‘The BFG’.  This week we have worked on activities about ‘Appearance Vs Personality’ and adjectives.  Roald Dahl is very good with his character descriptions – we are trying to be as good or better!

We have had PE twice this week, with Mrs Reid on Wednesday and we me on Thursday.  The focus for my PE lessons this term will be handball as we will be attending a cluster P3 handball festival in a couple of months.

We also looked at the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, including looking at a coupe of annimations to help us to understand them. We discussed the ones that apply to school and education,  then children voted on what they would like our display to look like – they chose superheros. We will work on making our Rights Respecting School display next week.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend – nice to see the sun back again.

P3B and Mrs Kennedy

Welcome Back to School!

Welcome back to school everyone for a new session!

I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed the lovely weather all summer.

What a busy week it has been and the time has flown! The staff were all in school last Monday for an INSET training day and took time to ensure classrooms and the school area were looking smart for our pupils rejoining us on Tuesday. Thank you to all of our staff for their hard work this week. All children have settled into school well, including our new Primary 1 pupils who have been brilliant. Our new Primary 7 pupils have been a credit to their parents over the past week, taking on their buddy and leadership roles with gusto! Across all stages, children have been settled, calm, well behaved and happy.

Our nursery have welcomed many new starts with lots of children joining our Springfield family.

We have been working on our school values this week and creating our Rights, Respecting Schools class charters to establish our class and school ethos for this session.

We will publish our Family Learning calendar in the next week with informative events (and some for fun!)  planned throughout the year.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Welcome to P4

This week we welcomed everyone back to school.  We had a lovely time getting to know each other through games such as charades and question time. We familiarized ourselves with the classroom routine and we are proud to say that we are great at following through with.

We have discussed and created our class agreement, class charter as well as individual termly jobs.  We looked into children’s rights briefly.   Next week will be learning about this in more detail.

We have also been able to share stories about what we have done during the school holidays. We made post cards as well.

Back to school Message from P6A

Welcome back. Hope you had a good summer holiday!

In literacy this week we did a story on our summer holidays, we also did an acrostic poem about what makes a happy classroom.

In numeracy we played maths games and coloured in emoji and football maths.

In across the curriculum we did music with Miss Bain. In music we wrote down what we liked in music and what instrument we would rather use. We also did P.E with Mrs McAlpine first. We played a few tig games then we played a relaxing sitting down game and we went outside for a bit of a cool down.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend and enjoys the sun.
