The 3 little pigs park in Primary 1

This week we had a revision week! We were practising all of the sounds we have learnt so far and doing lots of word building with these sounds. We played an initial sound game and had a box full of different items. When the music stopped, we had to pull out an object and identify the initial sound. We worked in pairs to play with the phonics dice and jigsaws. We played a memory game to match up our sounds and did lots of sensory activities to practise forming out letters. We had a graffiti wall this week and loved using all of the pens to try some writing. We also played teachers and had to use the phonics fans to test our friend. Some of the children have started to learn how to write short phrases. We learnt how to use finger spaces between our words and how to sit our letters on the line.

In Numeracy we were developing lots of different skills with our numbers to 10 and then 20. We were counting backwards, sequencing and ordering.  We played lots of games to recognise our numbers to 20. We had to deliver the letters to the correct doors and played number bingo. On Wednesday we had an introduction to 3D shape and started to learn some of the names of the different shapes. We learnt the difference between 2D and 3D shapes and did lots of sorting activities.

In PE this week we decided to have some time to relax as we are all feeling very tired! We did some cosmic yoga to the story of the hungry caterpillar. We talked about how important it is to stretch our muscles and how we can use this to keep calm.

In HWB we read a story called ‘Hands are not for Hitting’. We talked about the message in the story and linked this to our school values. Mrs McAulay gave us lots of different scenarios and we had to come up with ideas of what we could do instead of using unkind hands. We then drew around our hands and came up with lots of ideas of how our hands can help us in a positive way!

Our tuff tray this week was the story of the 3 little pigs. We had some puppets and story stones to retell the story. We also had a challenge to build a house for the pigs. We had some straw, bricks and sticks. We talked about how the bricks are stronger and more sturdy.

Thank you to Mrs Philpot for helping us paint our Fairyland castle. We are hoping to have this up for the dragon next week.

Hoping you all have a lovely weekend.

P7B Weekly Update!

Wednesday, 26th September was European day of languages. P7b joined together with P7a to learn some basic Portuguese vocabulary. We linked our Portuguese lesson to our learning and comparison study of Brazil. We discussed that Portugal is Europe and that Barzil is in South America, but that Portuguese is the chosen language in Brazil. We had fun learning some vocabulary and also comparing the similarities of some words to that of Spanish.  We worked in pairs to complete a language jigsaw, matching the Portuguese word to the English word. To finish off our lesson we learnt a popular Brazilian game that is played amongst children, the game involved memory and speed. The game was a lot of fun that we have continued to play it throughout the week on the playground.

Literacy: This week, a very special person is leaving our school. Jessie Orr, the lovely cook that has been cooking our delicious school dinners has decided after many years to retire. We wanted to do something special for Jessie, so that she will know how much we appreciated her. Last week, we learnt the features of a Tanka poem, we therefore decided to write Jessie a special message using the features of a Tanka poem, completing this activity was not only something special for a very special person, but it also helped us to consolidate our understanding of tanka poems, and helped us to practise identifying  the number of syllables in words.  We concentrated this week on homophones and identified the common errors when using the incorrect homophones in a sentence, the week before we looked at Synonyms and this week we consolidated our learning by identifying different synonyms for the different homophones that we were learning.

Numeracy: We continued to solve multiplication problems using the formal written method. We continued to play a range of different games to help us practise recalling our timetables.

IDL: In previous weeks, we learnt the location of Brazil, this week we looked again at the world map, and we revisited our knowledge of identifying the 7 continents on a map. We then had a look at South America and located Brazil, to continue with our comparison study, we identified Scotland and its major cities on a map

Expressive Arts: Christ the Redeemer is one of the most popular and well known landmarks of Brazil, this week we created our own images which represent Christ the Redeemer, we used a wide variety of different art techniques, such as shading, collage, overlapping and more.

HWB: This week we started our discussions on how to keep ourselves safe, how we will keep ourselves safe in the community. We worked in groups to identify the possible dangers that we could face, and we discussed different ways in which we can ensure that in a time of danger, we will be more aware of how to respond appropriately.

Discussing possible dangers in the community.

We continued to practise our basketball skill in PE, we used the skills that we have learnt throughout the term, and played a few short games against each other.

Wider Achievement: Well done to HR who had brought along her badges and gifts that she had received recently at girls brigade. It is always lovely to hear about all the achievements outside of school.

SPS and Bonnytoun News…

We hope that you have all had a good week. We can’t believe that it is the end of September already! Where does time go! This week saw us celebrating the European Day of Languages which culminated in our excellent assembly today led by Mrs Gordon, our 1+2 languages champion. Mrs Gordon has trained our pupils to be Language Ambassadors and they now help a variety of classes across school to learn French and Spanish. Thank you Mrs Gordon for your continued enthusiasm and hard work. It is much appreciated.

Today also marked the end of an era for our much-loved cook, Jessie, who has retired after 18 years of service at Springfield and many more with West Lothian Council. Jessie has gone over and above the call in her role for the duration of her time at SPS feeding children in school and providing catering for school events. We will miss her dearly and we wish her a long, happy and healthy retirement. Xx

Thank you also to all grown ups who attended our Family Learning event on the tracking and monitoring of pupil health and wellbeing across school, this week. We hope that you found it an informative evening.

Kind wishes for a happy weekend,

Miss Baillie xx💖💫

P3B are off to Australia!

On Thursday when we arrived in our classroom it had been transformed into an airport.  We had to check in our baggage and collect our Boarding Passes, which were then scanned to make sure they were correct.  After ordering our in in-flight meals, we boarded the plane to Sydney.  We fastened our seatbelts for take off and watched the in-fight security information.

There was a suitcase with lots of pictures of things relating to Australia in it, there were also some books, sun cream, sun glasses and a sun hat.  We enjoyed pulling out each item and they generated great discussion.

With our learning partners, we discussed what we would like to learn about Australia, we wrote these down and drew pictures for our planning book.  There were lots of interesting questions – ‘What does the temperature go up to?’, ‘How high can kangaroos jump?’ ‘What is the capital city of Australia?’ ‘What do you grow in your fields’ and ‘How many hours would it take to get to Australia in your car?’ plus many more.

I’m sure we will have fun investigating over the next few weeks.  We will also be comparing Scotland to Australia and hopefully making contact with a class in an Australian school, particularly as a lot of the children would like to learn about school in Australia.

If anyone has been to Australia and would like to come in to talk about their trip, or has any items that you think may interest us, please get in touch.

We rounded off our outer maths ‘Symmetry’ topic this week, using our knowledge and skills to create our own symmetrical art.  The pictures are excellent and I could tell that all of the children have a good grasp of symmetry as I saw them create their artwork.

A few pictures from our literacy lessons this week.  We have different activity stations around the classroom to allow us to practise our spelling words, we choose which stations we would like to work at.

Following on from our imaginative ‘My Dream’ writing, where we were looking at adding interesting vocabulary, We begun to learn about synonyms.  We had a lot of fun making word mats to help us in future writing lessons – showing alternative words we can use to up level our writing.

We have also been learning another Literature Circle skill, taking on the role of illustrator this week.  We learned a bit about the job of an illustrator and liked finding out that they draw designs not just for books but for lots of merchandise, posters, websites and animations too.  We practised by illustrating the part of The BFG where Sophie and The BFG have breakfast with The Queen.  The children listened very carefully to Roald Dahl’s excellent description and certainly made the words come alive with their illustrations.

There has been so much more fitted in too – French, reading, numeracy, PE, science and drama, as well as working on a special surprise for Jessie, our wonderful dinner lady who retired today! We had a special assembly, attended by the whole school, what a send off!

Last minute photos just in from Mrs Hogg who took us for Drama this week:

Have a lovely weekend, from P3B and Mrs Kennedy

Numeracy

We revised on symmetry in 2D shapes as well as place value.

We were learning to order and compare numbers.  We also used greater/ lesser than symbol to compare numbers.

Literacy

We were learning to identify verbs in a sentence, we were making inferences (while  reading) and we learnt to create a fact file about Philippines.

IDL and ICT

We used our netbook time to research about Scotland landscape, food and climate.

RME

We were learning about what it means to be a Christian and what Christianity means.

HWB

For PE, we had Quiditch in addition to badminton our badminton practice.

We also learnt about what friendships require in order to maintain  it.

Newspaper Reports, Australia and Parties! (P3A)

We have had a busy 8 days in P3A!

Last week we were the peg challenge winners again and we were also Class of the Week! Miss Harrison was extremely proud of us and we are going to continue to work hard to ensure that we win them again!

Last week we created newspaper reports on James and the Giant Peach. We were writing reports about when the peach landed on the Empire State Building! Firstly, we looked at features of a newspaper report and we created our own interesting headlines! Then we looked at the key facts and wrote these down on our planning sheets. We also used our planning sheets to take notes on the introduction, main story and conclusion. Afterwards we created our first copy of our newspaper reports in our jotters. We had to make sure that we used capital letters and full stops, put the events in the correct sequence and included who, what, when and where. Miss Harrison looked at all of our reports and checked our spelling. Finally we created final copies of our reports and made sure that our writing was neat and that we included a picture. Our newspaper reports are absolutely fantastic and we have displayed them inside and outside of our classroom.

This week we have been continuing to look at different reading skills. We have already looked at summarising and question writing and this week, we looked at illustrating. We looked the job of an illustrator and looked at some examples of famous illustrators and their work. Miss Harrison read us the last two chapters of James and the Giant Peach and we had to use our visualising skills and information from the text to create illustrations for those chapters. On Tuesday, we used our summarising and illustrating skills to create alternative blurbs and front covers for James and the Giant Peach. When we were writing our blurbs, we worked hard to summarise the story and not give too much away to the reader. We also tried to use interesting words. We definitely have authors and illustrators in the making!

This week it was European Day of Languages.  On Friday, we learned different colours in French. We listened to a song about French colours, we played some different games on the Promethean Board and we played a French colours game in our classroom. Miss Harrison will be using different French words and phrases that we learn throughout the week to help us to develop our language.

Over the last fortnight, we have continued to look at symmetry. Last week we reflected shapes and pictures in mirror lines to make them symmetrical. We also created our own symmetrical patterns. This week we concluded our learning on symmetry and we used our knowledge of lines of symmetry to create our own symmetrical designs on squared paper. We had to check if our designs were symmetrical by comparing both halves to check if they were a reflection of each other.

This week we have been learning to find 1 and 2 more or less than and 100 more or less than with numbers to 1000. We have also been learning to count on in twos and threes. When we were revising odd and even numbers, we played a game called ‘Popcorn’. Miss Harrison called out different numbers and if the number was even, we had to ‘pop’ up and if the number was odd then we had to ‘pop’ down!

On Thursday after break we arrived back into our classroom to discover boarding passes to Australia on our seats! Miss Harrison had a suitcase filled with sun cream, a sun hat, sunglasses, a story book called ‘What’s in Your Pocket?’, a weather map of Australia and photographs of Ayres Rock, Sydney Opera House, coral, kangaroos, koala bears, the Australian flag and Australian rugby players.  We discussed what we already knew about Australia and then we wrote down what we want to learn. We are going to be exploring the natural environment of Australia and by comparing the weather in Scotland and Australia, looking at how climate affects living things.

This week we had a very special party in P3A. A member of our class has been undergoing treatment for the last two years and this week, it was the end of her treatment. We are all very proud of how brave, strong and resilient she is and we wanted to celebrate! Miss Harrison also wanted to celebrate how kind, supportive and understanding we are in P3A. We ate lots of party food, listened and danced to music and had lots of fun!

Thank you very much for reading our blog post.

We hope that you have a lovely weekend,

P3A and Miss Harrison xxx

Laptops, Languages and Lunches

On Monday we learned about protractors. We investigated pairs of angles that make 180 degrees. We went down to the p2 classes and we went on the laptops and did symmetry and sumdog with them.

On Tuesday we did comprehension on Wonder. It was very hard but Mrs Mcvay and Mrs Begarnie helped us. We also did expressive language on the Amazon river to go on a cruise.

On Wednesday we did decimals in maths it was fun.

On Thursday we did netball in P.E. We played some netball games with only a shooter. After lunch we did music with Mrs Bain. In music we made up a song to do with the Amazon river and the things it goes past. On the laptops we put our research from the Amazon river into the laptops.

On Friday we started a new novel called ‘The Fox Girl and the White Gazelle’ with Mrs Begarnie.

We had a special assembly about the European Day of Languages. We then had a celebration for the best dinner lady in the world – Jessie. She is retiring after 18 years at Springfield primary where she has made over 2 million lunches! We will all miss her dearly!
