Primary 5 – w/e 9/11/18

In maths this week, some of us have begun to explore equivalent fractions and others have been looking at division and word problems. We hope that everyone is trying TT Rockstars and enjoying it.

We have looked at Remembrance Day and found out more about the poppy and why we wear it. We have also created our own poppies for a wall display. We wrote acrostic poems linked to this too.

We have begun to read Sky Song, our class novel and to explore the setting of the story. We have begun to write a non chronological report, about the Arctic and the environment found there. The Arctic was the inspiration for Abi Elphinstone when writing this novel.

In PE we have continued with our handball focus and as an extra this week, Primary 7 lead a football session for us, developing our team building and ball handling skills further.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Fireworks, Charlotte’s Web and Forces (P3A)

This week we concluded our learning focus on Australia. We presented our PowerPoints on Australian landmarks to the rest of the class and we discussed what we had learned. We also made comparisons between the natural environments of Scotland and Australia. Miss Harrison was very pleased with how confident we were when delivering our presentations and we were able to use ICT to successfully share information with others.

In Art and Design this week, we learned to create pictures of a view we had observed. We looked at images and a film of fireworks and we drew pictures to show what we saw. We used rulers to draw buildings in the foreground and then used oil pastels to create fireworks in the background. Here are our fantastic fireworks pictures…

This week we started our Book Study on Charlotte’s Web. When we came into school on Tuesday, there was a spider’s web on our classroom window with the message ‘Hi’! Miss Harrison read us the first chapter of the story and told us all of the things that we will be learning through Charlotte’s Web. On Wednesday, we looked at story settings. We looked at different pictures of story settings and we discussed with our learning partners stories that we knew that were set in each setting. We used clues from the text in Charlotte’s Web to discuss where we thought the story was set and then we used our own ideas to create a drawing or a model of the setting. Some of us also wrote descriptive sentences about the setting of Charlotte’s Web. In Literacy this week we have also been continuing to use our knowledge of punctuation to punctuate sentences correctly. We also revised when to use capital letters and we were able to use capital letters for names of people, names of places, dates, titles and at the start of sentences.

In Numeracy and Maths this week we have continued to learn different strategies to solve addition sums. We used 100 Squares to add on multiples of 10 to 2-digit numbers. We then used our knowledge of adding multiples of 10 to add 11, 21, 9 and 19 to 2-digit numbers. Some of us also learned how to bridge/cross numbers when adding. We looked at strategies to solve addition problems such as 17+6 or 65+17. Miss Harrison also showed some of us how to use a written method to add 3-digit numbers.

In Science we have started to learn about forces and magnetism. Miss Harrison showed us a science clip and then we investigated how a force can make an object change shape. We had paper, tin foil, play dough, cotton wool and cloth and we explored whether we could push, pull, stretch, squeeze, stretch and twist each material. We discussed how we applied a force to change the shape of the materials. Finally we played a game called ‘Squeeze and Squash’ and we were able to use vocabulary such as pushing, pulling, stretching, squashing and twisting to describe forces.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

P4/5 Week commencing 5th NOvember 2018

In handwriting we have been learning how to join letters to the letter “y”. We have also been trying our best to keep our work very neat and our letters on the line.  We have also been working on our pencil control techniques to help us.

On Wednesday we took part in the Big Spell and showed our parents the different activities we do to help us learn our spelling words.

We also started our new topic which is a book study on “The Firework Maker’s Daughter”.  We found out facts about the book and the author and made a prediction of what will happen in the story.

In Maths we took part in the BIG Maths challenge to improve our mental math and times table skills.  We have also been revising our six and nine time’s tables and working on our addition skills.

We had our second “Rugby taster” sessions at Linlithgow Rugby Club.  We learned how to throw, pass and catch the ball correctly.  We are looking forward to going back next Tuesday.

In French we have been learning about the different parts of the body and played the game “head, shoulders, knees and toes” in French.

In Drama we read a section of the book “The Animals of Farthing Wood” and acted out a scene.

In our class novel entitled “School Ship Tobermory” Ben & Badger were travelling through the store room where they found another door which they went through.  They found a girl called Tanya who had escaped from her Uncle and Aunt.  She told them how she had escaped and how she got aboard the ship.

P1b Hall of Fame

Mrs McAulay was very proud of her class this week as we won the peg challenge and also had 3 children add their names to the Springfield Hall of Fame! They have completed all of their values challenges and have been showing our values outside of school which is so nice to hear! Well done!! If you are close to filling yours, keep working hard and you can join them on our special wall.

AW also had an achievement this week as he won the Enjoyaball trophy. A big well done to him and for having the confidence to share this with the class.

Bang, whoosh, pop …..P1a weekly news

Another busy week in P1a.

In literacy we have been learning our vowels, and why they are important. We did lots of fun activities to help with this.

In numeracy we continue our addition journey and have been looking at all the different ways to make 2,3 and 4. The children have even been able to make number sentences and model these with blocks.

We did some firework activities this week in art and literacy. We made firework pictures with the oil pastels and brusho which we all loved using. We then wrote some words to describe fireworks like bang, boom, zoom etc.

In PE our focus has been on agility and movement. We had to change movements and directions when Mrs Gordon said a new colour. We really liked the tartan one where we did the Highland Fling.

Happy weekend

Mrs Gordon and P1a

Primary 2B

In Phonics we have been learning the words that begin with br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr and tr. The children have also been practising their common words. I think that the parents and grandparents who joined us for the Big Spell yesterday enjoyed seeing how the children learn their sounds. It was lovely to see you all and the children enjoyed showing you what they can do.

In Maths we have continued with addition but the numbers are getting bigger. In our Big Start today , the children could choose the difficulty of the addition calculations they wanted to do. They enjoyed having the choice and making their own decisions.

We have begun to look at Katie Morag stories and have watched a clip of Katie Morag showing us her island and introducing us to her family and friends. The children have been describing what Katie Morag looks like and what her character is like.

On Monday we did some super firework pictures using brightly coloured chalks.

We have begun practising songs for our Nativity and Miss.Prince and I have been casting the characters, which the children will be informed of very soon.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Blending and doubling in P2A

In Phonics this week we have been learning about consonant blends – br cr dr fr pr. On Wednesday we showed some of our adults what we do in Phonics. We love writing our spellings in different ways, this week we used chalks and wrote rainbow words.

In Maths we continued our work on addition to 20, this week we used our knowledge of doubling numbers to help us. For example:

6 + 5 =

Double 6 is 12

Take one away = 11

Here’s a good game to practise this strategy at home:

In PE we played a tricky game called opposites, whatever Miss Prince told us to do we had to do the opposite – we had to concentrate really hard! We also practised our ball skills; we learnt the bounce pass and the chest pass and practised these with a partner.

In Writing we sequenced a story about Bonfire Night. We wrote sentences and ordered them correctly, checking that our writing made sense.

During Milk and story we listened to Katie Morag stories and learned about the Isle of Struay. We made a mind map to record the things we’ve learnt about Katie Morag so far. Next week we will be writing to Katie Morag and telling her all about where we live.

We had interesting show and tells from the girls on Thursday, everything from first wobbly teeth to homemade dresses!

We also began practising our Nativity songs with P2B, next week we will find out our parts – we are very excited!

Have a lovely weekend,

Love P2A and Miss Prince x

A Friend Comes to Stay (P3B)

‘Remember, Remember the 5th of November!’  We began the week learning a little about Guy Fawkes and then watched some films and looked at pictures of fireworks.  We drew our own interpretations of what we saw, thinking about colour, patterns and shapes.  I’m sure you will agree the results are fantastic.  All of the pictures are now on our classroom wall and they have really livened it up.

On Tuesday, a visitor arrived in the corner of our classroom in the form of a friendly spider called Charlotte.  We have begun to read the novel ‘Charlotte’s Web’ and were very relieved in the first chapter when Fern saved Wilber the pig!  Wilber has just moved to a new farm and at the moment has no friends, we think he may meet a special friend very soon.

On Wednesday we had a ‘Big Spell’ event in school where family members were invited in to see our spelling lessons.  As we do twice a week, we had different spelling stations for us to choose from to allow us to practise our spelling words in various ways.

On Thursday we did a ‘setting’ activity based on Charlotte’s Web.  We listened to an extract from Chapter 3 which described the barn that Wilber has just moved to.  We then chose an activity to show our understanding of the setting.  Some of us wrote about it, some drew detailed pictures and some built it using Lego.  All of the children now have a good understanding of what a ‘setting’ is and I could tell they listened well as they added a lot of detail in each of the tasks.

The 22nd November is not far away and we are continuing to prepare for our Benchball Festival.  We had some really close games and I can see that our skills are improving all the time.  This week we thought about our positioning and tried to find spaces to allow our teammates to pass the ball to us.

As we approach a very special Armistice Day with the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War, we have been learning the ‘Poppy Story’ which has helped us to understand why we wear poppies at this time of year.  We also had our own poppy factory at Golden Time on Friday.  The children used different resources to create their own poppies – with great results!

We also learned a little about communication during the war as our problem solving task this week was to use morse code to decode a secret message.  We also looked at several other methods of communication during the first and second world wars, the children were all very interested and engaged in this.

In numeracy, we are continuing our work on addition, although we are adding 2-digit numbers, remembering our number bonds within 10 helps us with this work.  If you are trying a maths games next week for homework, number bonds games would be a good idea.

In Science with Mrs McVay we were learning about the eight planets in the Solar System and began to learn the correct order for them.  The children completed a scavenger hunt to find the names of the planets and then grouped them into the rocky planets and the gas giants.  They listened to ‘The Planets’ by Holst and tried to identify which part of the music represented what planet.  Some children have been drawing the solar system in their free play time – a sure sign they have and enjoyed and understood the lessons 🙂

Friday was the deadline for our Shoebox Appeal.  We have been overwhelmed by how generous Springfield families have been.  There will be a special blog about it next week but a big thank you to those who handed something in 🙂

Have a great weekend, from P3B and Mrs Kennedy

Grounds Maintenance at Springfield

Some of our parents have been busy helping in our playground of late. Bulb planting has taken place and a general ‘spruce up’  has been undertaken. Thank you all so much to our helpers! You have made such a difference already. xx

We are still needing shrubs cut back, particularly around the perimeter of our pitch and odd tidying jobs completed.

We also love help from any parent who would be able to join some of our tyres together, with screws, to make a large planter.

If you can spare a little bit of time to help us then please email the school office.

We’d be so grateful,

Miss Baillie xx
