Otter and Puffin Fact Files (P2B)

As part of our IDL focus ‘From Front Door to Seashore’, we have been learning facts about coastal birds and marine mammals.  We have also been exploring seashore minibeasts and underwater plants. This week we used non-fiction texts to find out information about otters and puffins. Miss Harrison read us a story called ‘Dylan’s Amazing Dinosaurs’ and we noticed that Dylan used a fact file to record information about a T-Rex. Using our facts, we selected whether to create a fact file about an otter or a puffin. We explored the layout of a fact file and Miss Harrison told us about the different subheadings. Using bullet points and sentences, we created our own fact files. Miss Harrison was so impressed with our fact files and we displayed our school values, confident and resilient, when writing our information.

In Literacy this week we have also been learning the sounds ‘dr’ and ‘fr’. We practised word building on our magnetic boards and we created our own sentences containing ‘dr’ and ‘fr’ words. Some of us also revised the sounds ‘oi’ and ‘oy’.

In Numeracy, we have been learning to find 10 more or less than with numbers to 100. We used a 100-square to help us to count on or count back in tens. Later in the week we looked at comparing numbers. We were able to find the larger or the smaller number with numbers to 100. Some of us played a game where we picked a number each and the person with the larger number scored one point!

In Number Talks, we have been looking at ‘Esti-Mysteries’. Miss Harrison has been showing us different objects in a glass and we have been giving our own estimations. After different clues, we check to see if our estimate is still possible and if not, make a new estimate. Finally, we explain why we chose that estimate. We are really enjoying our Number Talks!

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

Dragon writing in P1a

Literacy

P1a were very busy this week when we did our first piece of writing. We decided to write to our dragon visitor. The first thing we had to do was close our eyes and imagine what our dragon looked like…we then told our partners and went on to draw the dragon. After that we wrote a sentence about our dragon. Some of us had some great ideas like “my dragon is confident”, and “my dragon shoots fire”. Everyone of us had a try at writing the sounds they could hear in the words we wrote. Mrs Gordon was very impressed with our work.

Our new sounds for this week were e like egg and h like hat. We love the rhyme for h as we get to hop around.

Numeracy

We revised our numbers to 10 and were able to count forwards and backwards and order them with ease. Mrs Gordon was very proud. Next week we move on to more and less and after the holidays to addition.

In shape we started to learn 3D shapes, this was very tricky. We learnt cube, cuboid, sphere, cylinder and pyramid. We then had to sort objects into their shape. We are finding it hard to know when it is a rectangle or a cuboid. Maybe we could practise with shapes around our house.

French

In French this week with Camembear we learnt how to say how we are. The question is ca va? and we can answer ca va bien (feeling good), comme ci comme ca (ok) or ca va mal (not feeling good). Everyone managed to tell Mrs Gordon how they were feeling.

HWB

In PE we are continuing balancing skills with Mrs Reid. We had to balance on benches and the horse. We also had a session with the P7 sports leaders where we did a circuit course. It was really fun.

The value we focused on this week was resilience. We loved hearing a story about Zid the alien and how he was trying to make the best dress in the world. Each time he had to listen to his friends and make a change to improve it. We talked about times when we had been resilient, and shared it with the class.

If anyone has any little bits of green fabric/material in the house could you please send in for next week. We are making a beanstalk for Fairyland and it works particularly well with different textures and materials. Thank you!

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a

Friendly dragon writing in P1B

Thank you for attending parents’ evening – it was lovely to meet you all!

The sounds we learned this week are:

e – lift off the top and scoop out the egg

h – down the head to the horse’s hooves and over his back

Here is our super writing on whiteboards – we’re working hard to form the letters correctly and sit them on the line:

We need to remember to make the h tall or else it looks like a n! Here’s the website we use to practise this:

Letter and Number Formation

In Literacy we did our first ever piece of writing – we wrote a description of the friendly dragon. Mrs Bell was so impressed with us!

In Numeracy we worked on ordering numbers to 10 forwards and backwards. Here’s a game we played in class:

Free play fun:

Admin for next week:

  • No new sounds next week as we will be revising the sounds we have learned so far
  • On Wednesday we will be making a beanstalk for Jack – if you have any spare green material  that we could use to make the leaves that would be a big help.

Have a lovely weekend,

Love P1B and Mrs Bell x

Busy days and nights in P7a

To begin this week our school ties finally arrived 🙂 🙂 🙂

This week has been very busy in P7a. We started our research for the assembly, sorted ourselves into groups and wrote our scripts. We have rehearsed a couple of times this week and will continue to do this after the holidays. The assembly is at 10am on Friday 25th October- it will be our last ever class assembly in P7a so we hope you can all come along.

We shone in our most recent duty- time monitors for the teachers at the recent parent nights. The feedback from the teachers and parents was really positive and amazing- we loved helping out and got to speak to lots of different people.

Today E, A and F went to Linlithgow Academy for a language event. When they were there they took part in a treasure hunt, quizzes and got to try some croissants- they were yummy 🙂

Next week we start our Futsal sessions, we will be doing these every 2nd week until December.

We hope you have a lovely weekend, we cannot believe we only have one week left of term 1- what a quick term that was!

Primary 6 – w/e 4th October 2019

Another busy week here in Primary 6.

It was lovely to chat with you all and to share your child’s progress.

In maths we have been exploring place value, looking at addition and subtraction of numbers and also exploring methods of how to find a number half way between two other numbers.

In writing, we created cinquain poems about autumn. Ask us the rules for creating one of these poems.

In PE we have had the opportunity to play some mini games of basketball, putting into practise all the skills we have been learning this term.

In music we have started to create a song about rivers.

In science we were learning about energy, playing a loop game to help us remember different energy sources.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Litter Picker Superheroes in P2A

It has been a very busy week in P2A. Please take a look at what we have been up to!

On Monday we went out to the field with some P7’s and took on the big challenge of picking up all the litter in the field. To help us pick up the litter we used litter pickers, bin bags and gloves. We were able to pick up at least a bin bag full of litter between the whole class. We couldn’t believe how much litter we picked up in such a short amount of time. Hopefully we can go out again soon and pick up even more litter!

We had lots of fun playing with the rock pool this week in class. There were shells, rocks and animals in the tuff tray. We were able to work together to name the animals and say some of the food they would eat. We enjoyed having the water in the rock pool although the floor got a little wet at times! There was even a light house on top of a rock. We think Mr Grinling is watching over the animals.

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been investigating 10 more than and less than any given number within 100. We learned that the units stay the same when taking away 10 or adding 10 but the tens change. Some of us were doing so well with this that Miss Muir asked us to be ‘mini teachers’. We were able to explain this strategy well to our classmates who found it challenging at first. Also we have been comparing numbers within 100, identifying the largest and smallest. We really enjoyed playing ‘Coconut Ordering’ during free play to help us with this.

During story time we read a book called ‘Dylan’s Amazing Dinosaurs’. In the book he has a fact file all about T-Rex’s. As we talked about beach habitats last week and the animals that live on the beach a fact file would be a great way to show our learning. We learnt about what we should include in a fact file and how to pick key information to write one. We either chose to write about an otter or a puffin. After we wrote our fact files we played a game of ‘Guess Who?’ We were very good at guessing each other’s animals from the descriptions.

Also we enjoyed being reporters for the Springfield Herald and Reporting Scotland this week. We played different roles when presenting the news: reporter, camera operator and script writer. We even used microphones and wore a sparkly bow tie to complete our reporter’s outfit!

In P.E we were improving our balance and control on Tuesday with Miss Muir. There were different activities such as hopping, passing/catching a ball to a partner, ‘copy me’ and bean bag throw. We were able to discuss what we found challenging when practising our balance and control. We then discusses what we could do in our next P.E lesson to overcome our challenges.

We can’t wait to see what next week brings.

P2A and Miss Muir 🙂

P3B Week commencing 23rd September 2019

This week in PE we continued to develop our Bench Ball skills.  After warming up with different passing and ball catching activities we formed small teams.  In our teams we played against one another and tried to score as many points as we could.  We are getting much better at moving around the court and passing the ball to each other.

In writing we wrote stories based on our class novels about Percy the Park Keeper.  We used the story about the animal’s tree being damaged in the big storm as a base to discuss how a story is written.  We learned that it has to have a beginning, middle and end together with a setting and characters.  Some of us took up the challenge set the Badger to introduce some new characters and also come up with a new adventure involving Percy and his animal friends.

In Maths we all received our new square papered jotters and learned how to write and lay out or work in them.  The jotters are very different to the workbooks we have been used to so we have been taking extra care to keep our sums neat and tidy.  We have started looking at addition and have started to write out our sums using the textbooks.  It is quite tricky but we are getting there!

In art this week we have been looking at some of the different wildlife found in Hawaii.  We looked closely at the Green turtles found in the water around the islands.  We looked at the different patterns on the shells and then used oil pastels to create our own turtle designs.  When we finished drawing them we then painted round them with a blue paint wash to make them look as if they are swimming in the sea.  They look amazing so we are all looking forward to start making our Hawaiian Island display.

On Friday to celebrate Modern Languages Day the assembly was conducted by the Language Ambassadors.  They taught us how to sing in French, German and Spanish!
