Litter, Lighthouses and Be Excited About Reading (P2B)

We have had a very busy last week of term in P2B!

On Monday afternoon we went litter picking with some of the P7 Buddies. We were pretty shocked to see the amount of litter left in our playground. On Tuesday we learned about why litter is bad and we decided to create posters to encourage people not to litter. We created fantastic titles and drew interesting pictures. On Wednesday we added facts about litter and used colour to make our posters eye-catching. Miss Harrison was very impressed with our work. We are going to display our litter posters around the school to encourage people to keep our playground clean.

This week we have been learning the sounds ‘gr’ and ‘pr’. We made ‘gr’ and ‘pr’ words on our magnetic boards, wrote ‘gr’ words to match pictures and made prisms using construction materials. Some of us also revised the sounds ‘ai’ and ‘ay’.

In Numeracy and Mathematics, we have been learning to compare numbers to 100. We have been finding the smaller or larger number when given two numbers and we have been finding the smallest or largest number when given a group of numbers. This week we also learned to order numbers to 100. We played ‘Eggs to Order’ and ‘Caterpillar Ordering’ on our Promethean board. In Number Talks, we have been continuing to solve ‘Esti-Mysteries’. We are getting really confident with making our estimates and after each clue, making new estimates.

On Tuesday, we learned about lighthouses in the past and present and how lighthouses are designed. In groups, we worked together to plan and build lighthouses using wooden blocks. Our STEM challenge was to create the tallest lighthouse! We talked about the stability, balance and shape of our lighthouses. Afterwards, we discussed what went well and what we could do differently next time.

On Thursday, we looked at photographs of lighthouses and discussed the shapes and lines that we could see with our learning partners. Afterwards we used paint to create seascape backgrounds. Later in the afternoon, we drew lighthouses and once our backgrounds are dry, we’ll add our lighthouses. We really enjoyed creating our lighthouses and we are very proud of our work.

On Friday we had our first Be Excited About Reading (BEAR) event. We brought our favourite books from home, a teddy, cushions and blankets! We got comfortable in our classroom, read our books, shared our favourite books with our friends and had some hot chocolate! Afterwards we worked in pairs to complete a short read activity. We highlighted the key information in the text and then we used the key information to help us to draw a picture. To conclude our BEAR event, we went to the school library and picked a book to take home. We will be going to the school library every Friday.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a happy and safe October break.

Primary 6 – w/e 11th October 2019

Our final week of Term 1.

This week we have more mental maths, exploring addition through number talks and mental addition of bigger numbers.

We finished our block of basketball lessons, with some shooting and mini games, practising all the skills we have learned this term.

In Short Read this week our activity was a Blankety Blank. Ask us what we did for this.

In music we wrote and recorded our song about rivers.

We wrote an imaginative story about our mythical creatures.

Have a lovely holiday.

Kind regards

Term 1 comes to an end in P7a

On Monday we finished our Dodgeball sessions in PE with a round robin competition. We have all enjoyed these lessons and become more accurate over the past 6 weeks. We did our final leadership groups of this term and the Newspaper group completed this terms Springfield News.

On Tuesday we started our stories for the Rotary Club, Annual Jim Clark Memorial Trophy writing competition, this year the topic is on Connections. We discussed what this meant to us before writing a variety of interesting stories. In Science we had a visit from Mr Marshall from Linlithgow Academy to introduce us to the F1 challenge we will be taking part in next term. It looks really exciting and we are looking forward to completing this activity after the holidays.

On Wednesday we had our Harvest Festival in the afternoon, this was a good chance for us to reflect on our own lives and those who need more help and support in our community and around the world.

We watched a BBCTeach, Growth Mindset and Health and Wellbeing lesson on Thursday as part of Mental Health Awareness Day. We learned a few calm down ideas, including finger breathing (ask us what this is and we can show you 🙂 ). We started our Futsal sessions as well, this was interesting and fun.

Today was our dress down day, raising funds for St Michael’s Hospital. We received our new leadreship badges as well 🙂 We completed a Short Read, Blankety Blank task on our class novel and then finished the day with a variety of problem solving tasks.

Have a great holiday, don’t forget we are all back on Tuesday 22nd October.

P.S. Our school show in March will be Fame- we are very, very, very excited about this!!!!!!!!!!!

Lighthouses, STEM Challenge and Posters in P2A

We have went Lighthouse mad this week in P2A! Miss Muir set us a STEM challenge: build the tallest lighthouse. In teams we had 10 minutes to construct a lighthouse which could stand on its own using wooden blocks. We all had the same amount and size of blocks so that it was fair. We then measured our lighthouses to see which one was the tallest. All of them were higher than 55 cm! After we built our lighthouses we reflected on the challenge. We discussed if the blocks were a good material, how we worked as a team, what we used the blocks for and what we could do next time. It was lots of fun.

In Expressive Arts we created our own lighthouse pictures. As a class we looked at and discussed what a lighthouse looks like: shape, colour and lines it has. Some of us were even able to describe a time when we had seen a lighthouse. We then looked at the landscape of where lighthouses are set. To create our picture we painted the background first. This was our sky and sea. We were able to explore the mixing of colours to create our backgrounds. On a separate piece of paper we drew an outline of a lighthouse then used either pen, crayon or pencil to add colour. We then cut them out. We are very pleased with our work so far and can’t wait to finish them.

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been comparing and ordering numbers within 100. We were able to put a range of numbers in order from smallest to largest and largest to smallest. During Number Talks we have been taking part in ‘Esti Mysteries’. This is where we look at different objects in jars and estimate how many objects there are. We are then given clues as to what the number will be. We then change our answer depending on the clues until the answer is revealed. During free play we have enjoyed estimating how many fuzzy balls there are in the jar and are excited to find out the answer. Miss Muir doesn’t even know how many there are!

Last week we went out litter picking with some P7’s and read a story called the ‘Messy Magpie’. We thought of what we could do to stop people littering. We came up with the idea to create posters. We thought this would be a good way of spreading the message. We looked at what would make a good poster. We had to make sure it had a title, some sentences of what litter can do to the environment and be eye catching. Miss Muir was impressed at how hard we worked to make sure the posters looked their best. We really enjoyed making these. Some of us during break and lunch have even been litter picking.

In P.E we were improving our balance and control on Tuesday with Miss Muir. There were different activities such as hopping, passing/catching a ball to a partner, bean bag throw and pass the hoop. We worked well together in our pairs and teams, helping each other develop our skills.

We hope you have a lovely October break! P2A and Miss Muir 🙂

Literacy and English

War Horse is our latest class novel and we have been doing some shared reading around the text. The story tells of Joey, a brave hearted farm horse, who is exposed to the horrors of war. Our initial focus was identifying themes from the text and making predictions about the outcome. We have also been analysing and annotating the text to identify key features of writing. We were able to identify and use examples of parenthesis (dashes, commas or brackets) used to provide additional information. Finally, we looked at sequential openers and connectives – firstly, secondly, then, afterwards, meanwhile, etc – before using these to make a piece of writing ‘flow’.

Question – Can you identify where I’ve used 3 examples of parenthesis in the previous paragraph?

In writing we have been note taking during our research on volcanoes, using subheadings and bullet points in doing so. We then used this information to write an informative essay on volcanoes. We described what volcanoes are, explained how they erupt, provided definitions of the terms active, dormant, extinct, gave examples of types of volcanoes and even gave key facts and information about an active volcano of our choice. Please take some time to have a read of these, they really are excellent examples of our work. Well done P5!

Numeracy and Mathematics

We are still enjoying being posed with some pictorial Number Talks that involve making estimations and reasoned guesses. These types of problem require us to show resilience through ‘trial and error’ and ‘process of elimination’ approaches. As time progresses, we are given additional clues that allow us to narrow our scope, e.g. the number is one less than a multiple of 11, the number is odd, the number does not have a 7 in the tens place.

We have finished our block of work on subtraction having developed both written and mental strategies within the operation. Mr Logan has been encouraging us to always evidence our working and strategies used in order to gain full credit for our work. We are looking forward to moving on to multiplication next week when we will be recapping on our tables knowledge, multiplying by a single-digit, multiplying by two-digits and widening our range of mental strategies.

Learning Across the Curriculum

Science and Social Studies – In Japan, we were keen to learn more about volcanoes as there are 110 active ones located there. We have been learning what a volcano is, how they erupt, what stages of volcano there are and about the main types. Following this we created annotated diagrams in our jotters. Next week we will be creating  and decorating papier mache volcanoes and making them erupt in a science investigation. Please send in newspaper, cardboard sheets or boxes, plastic bottles and milk cartons if you have them!

Spanish – Mr. Vilanova has been working on numbers and colours with us as we begin developing our ability to read, speak, write and listen in Spanish.

P.E – In basketball we have been developing our passing and movement skills within game situations. We have been attempting to move the ball quickly between all players and get ourselves high up the court to put pressure on the opposition when defending.

P3B Week commencing 30th September

In writing we carried out some research into turtles that are found off the coast of Hawaii. We used this information to make a fact file. We found out that a turtle can hold its breath under the water for 5 hours. They like to eat seagrass, seaweed and algae. When they are born they are 2 inches long and can grow to approximately 5 feet tall. That is almost as big as Mr Ritchie! They hatch out of eggs that are buried in the sand. There are approximately 100 eggs buried at a time.

This week in PE we continued to develop our Bench Ball skills. After warming up with different activities we formed small teams. In our teams we played against one another and tried to score as many points as we could.

In Maths we have been learning how to add and how to write our sums down correctly using our new squared paper jotters. We have also been working on symmetry and found lots of patterns in different animals, particularly in butterflies.

In French this week we learned how to count up to ten. We then used this information to ask each other how old we were and what we were called. We also learned the names for different colours of the rainbow.

In Science we learned about the different planets in the solar system. We learned their names, their orbits and how they travel around the sun. We also learned the names of some of the dwarf planets.

In reading we read about sharks that swim in the ocean off Hawaii. We then completed a comprehension activity to check what we had learned about them. We learned that baby sharks are called pups and they swim in a school. There are over 500 different spices of shark. Some of the species are called bull sharks, tiger sharks, great white and hammerhead sharks. If a shark stops swimming it will die because the water will remain in its gills, so it needs to keep moving to breath.

PPrimary 4B – The Diary Writers

In Primary 4B we have been writing diary entries. We watched a video clip of a girl called Nisha who lived in an Indian village. She told us about her day and we discussed how different it was to a typical day in our life. We then pretended we were Nisha and wrote about her day. We remembered to use “I”, keep the events in sequence and use time connectives. Some brilliant diary entries. Well done everybody. Also in Literacy, we have been learning where to use exclamation marks in sentences. We now know when to use a full stop, a question mark or an exclamation mark at the end of a sentence.
In Numeracy we are continuing our work with higher numbers and have been looking at adding doubles and near doubles. We have also been working out how many vertices, edges and surfaces 3D shapes have. This was also explored in our work with some of the P7’s when we went outside and made 3D shapes out of twigs. Some of them stayed together!! We also used straws to make 3D shapes – some more successful than others.
We have continued our research on our chosen subjects and will do our presentations next week. Really looking forward to seeing and hearing them!
Sorry there’s no photos this week but we took them on the school ipad and as I wasn’t in yesterday couldn’t get them. Lovely to see you all again this week.

Sea Turtles and Sharks in P3A

Following on from our beautiful artwork last week, we have been doing more research on the green sea turtle.  On Monday we did some ‘reading for information’ where we read a passage about green sea turtles and wrote notes on what they look like, where they live and what they eat.  We then used netbooks to find some other interesting facts and took notes on these too.  On Tuesday we used our notes to write fact files about green sea turtles.  We worked hard on our research skills, reading for information is quite new to us and we had to read carefully to find the information we needed.  At the end of the week we did a reading comprehension on sharks.  A lot of us are really interested in sharks and enjoyed finding out more about them.  Again, we had to look closely for words and clues to help us answer the questions. Good work P3A!

In numeracy, we are continuing to learn addition facts to 20.  We have also been reading word problems and translating them into written sums in our jotters.  We have begun doing short ‘Number Talks’ most days, these are mental maths exercises to improve our number sense and to help us  to solve calculations quickly.  We each try to solve the problem in our heads, then we talk with others in the class, explaining our thinking and sharing strategies. There are a few hand signals that we use during number talks sessions and we have enjoyed putting these into practise.

Number Talks Hand Signals in English and Spanish

In French, we continued to practise greetings.  We have been learning:

  • salut – hi
  • bonjour – hello
  • ça va? – how are you
  • ça va mal – I’m not so good
  • ça va bien – I’m good
  • pas mal – not bad
  • bonsoir – good evening
  • bonne nuit – goodnight
  • au revoir – goodbye

We played pairs and snap, matching the phrases to pictures.  It was good fun and it made us say the words a lot 🙂

Our House Captains led the assembly on Friday and they taught us a little about each of our houses – Binns, Ochiltree, Hopetoun and Champfleurie.  It was interesting finding out about the real houses.  They also launched a competition for us to draw pictures of the houses, the winners will have their picture displayed in the school corridor.  We will do our pictures in class after the October break.

Have a good weekend everyone, from P3A and Mrs Kennedy

Welcome to p5/6 4.10.19

In science we were learning about different types of energy and now we are going to  find out about how electricity is made. We are learning about rebewable and non renewable sources. Find out more next week!

In maths we were rounding  to the nearest tens and hundreds and  we were estimating  in maths . For number talks we were estimating from guesses how many prisms were in a glass.

iN 3d shape we were investigating nets for cube. Our challenge was to find as many different nets as possible. We found 10!

In literacy we were doing comprehension and going back into Roald Dahl’s child hood.  We were also doing an information slip on the Amazon River .

In music we were doing Saturday night song with Ms Bain. This week we were adding lots of different musical instruments for the song. We recorded it for the class .

In PE Mrs Mc Vay tired  us out when we played “exhaustion.

Have a good weekend .
