On Tuesday, we went to the Palace to play games with Gordon, the Historic Scotland Ranger. The game was about Food Chains. In the Food Chain, there was a heron, trout, shrimp and algae. We had to put on a bib. On each bib, there was a part of the food chain. We had to run away from the predators and also, catch the food we needed eat.

We visited St Michael’s Church and loved the stain glass windows. We saw a font, the pulpit with 4 Queens- Mary, Queen of Scots, Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Margaret and Queen Victoria, the pews ,the Cross, and a Bible,

At lunchtime, it was fantastic to have a picnic!

Later on, we went for a walk and Gordon showed us the trees, where the bats lived. Then we went and fed the Swans, the Geese, the Gulls and the Coots.

Nursery- learning about dinosaurs

Dinosaurs

Over the last few weeks we have been learning about dinosaurs. The children wanted to create Dinosaur Kingdom in our outdoor area. Dinosaurs were added to this area, they had pretend eggs and bones. Catriona then created her own sign for this land. The next day we had a dinosaur hunt and everyone had to complete a chart as soon as they saw a dinosaur. We have made clay dinosaurs and fossils and have even discovered bones in our sand tray. In nursery we now have a museum with a dinosaur display. We have posters and talking cards which share our learning. We have also been listening to lots of stories about dinosaurs and have created our own non-fiction dinosaur book.

Primary 1/2 Vs The Big Bad Wolf

This week in Primary 1/2 we have been solving some very tricky problems. After reading the story of The 3 Little Pigs, we were set a challenge by the Big Bad Wolf. He dared us to try and build a house that he would not be able to blow down. We used our team work skills to design a house and discussed the materials we would use. We then had a go at making some houses out of paper, wood, Lego and straw. It was a lot harder than it sounds. We had to show resilience when things got tough.  img_5176 img_5175 img_5174 img_5170

We have been playing lots of games with our new sounds. Miss Mudd was in a real muddle this week and had jumbled up all of her sentences so she needed help putting them back together in the right order.

img_5165 img_5161 img_5104 img_5107

In PE we continued to work on our basic skills and moved around different stations to practise. We also got the balloons out to help us develop our throwing and catching skills. It was great fun!

img_5079 img_5081 img_5158 img_5156In our writing, we are planning a story about a spider than lives in the Enchanted Forest. We have each developed our own main character and have described them using some awesome adjectives. We made our spiders out of different materials and really brought them to life!

We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and a well deserved break. Be safe and enjoy your family time.

P1/2 and Miss Mudd

Science with Mrs Tulloch

Primary 5 have been learning all about our solar system. They have been demonstrating how the moon and earth rotate about the sun and showing the phases of the moon with Oreos. It was a very popular lesson this week.

P6 are currently finding out about renewable and non renewable energy. There has been lots of great discussions going on. It has been very topical with fracking in the news. We hope to get our water turbine, solar panels and wind turbine working to power bulbs, motors, etc.

P7 are looking a the huge topic of classification. They have investigated the the 5 kingdoms. P7A have been classifying flowering and non flowering plants within our school ground and P7B having been researching different species of the animal kingdom. They are now about to classify vertebrates and invertebrates.

Another exciting week in P3

This week has been another busy week for P3. In literacy we have been exploring the use of adjectives and how they can make our writing more interesting through describing animals from Madagascar. In addition we also looked at story writing, and the components which make a good story; the children enjoyed writing their stories about an animal from Madagascar coming to UK and Linlithgow!

P3 and P2/3 also had their first of six football lessons from an SFA coach as part of the Tesco Bank football challenge. On another sporty note, both classes are also looking forward to their benchball festival next Wednesday – wishing them all lots of luck!

On Wednesday our classroom turned into a junk yard when we finally got round to making our islands out of old junk from home; a huge thank you again for all your support in collecting these materials together. The children enjoyed working together to make their islands and are very excited to finish them off next week!

P6A are Thespians!

A massive well done to all of the children in P6A, Mrs Kerr and Miss Devine for their assembly today! The children have been learning about different plays including Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Today our gym hall was transformed into the Globe Theatre as the children acted out parts of the plays that they had studied and presented information on them. What an amazing effort! We may see you all on a ‘real’ stage someday!

Have a fantastic weekend!

Kind wishes,

Miss Baillie x

P7a

What a busy week we have had. We have been looking at figurative language with a focus on personification. We linked this to National Poetry Day on Thursday and have been writing feelings poems. I have been very impressed with the creativity!
In French and Spanish we have been learning about classroom objects. The children now know how to ask in French or Spanish if they need to go the toilet” in these lessons !
In our Brazil IDL sessions the class have been creating group presentations about an area they wanted to find out more about.
In maths we focused on multiplication and division of decimals and this will continue next week. We continue our 3 times a week Number Talk sessions to help build mental maths confidence and find new strategies.

We finished our growth mindset sequence of lessons by drawing, discussing and linking the metaphor of the “Learning Pit”. This helped us to understand why being stuck and making mistakes helps us learn! Ask your children to tell you about the learning pit.

Bon weekend from P7a and Mrs Gordon !

P1B Puppet shows and castle

Another busy week in P1B.  We now have a castle in our classroom  – all the children worked hard to build it.  We put our name on the bricks so that everyone knows who made it!  We’ve been playing in it a lot – lots of role play going on with knights and baddies, kings and queens.

We have been reading the story of The Three Little Pigs this week.  We have been talking about and drawing the ‘setting’ of the story.  We have been writing some words from the story too, sounding out as we write. We all had a really good go and Mrs Kennedy is amazed at how well we are learning our sounds.  We also made puppets and worked in groups to put on shows, retelling the story.  We are very good at putting on different voices for different characters and using props.

Later in the week, some of us decided to be judges during the shows – we made notes and wrote down scores – great writing practise.

016 017

In maths we have been learning about gathering information and how to record it, using tally marks and pictographs.  We made a giant pictograph showing our favourite fruit.

We are a very creative bunch – during free play we have been really busy using lots of different materials to make signs and flags for the castle as well as masks, hats, bracelets and much more. Here we are with some of the things we’ve made. Mrs Kennedy is very pleased with all our problem solving, decision making and persistence 🙂

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.  P1B x

Class of the Week for P1A!

What a busy week we have had in P1A!

On Monday, we had gym. We were practising different movement skills such as jumping, throwing, catching, skipping and balancing. Look how smart we look in our gym kits!

pe-1 pe-2 pe-3 pe-4 pe-5

Our sounds this week were ‘r’ and ‘m’. We have been learning to read, say and write our sounds. Some of us got covered in flour when Miss Harrison let us write ‘m’ in the flour trays! Next week our sounds will be ‘d’ and ‘e’.

In numeracy, we have been learning about tally marks and pictograms. We played a game on Education City and then we made our own pictograms. Some of the buddies came to see us on Wednesday and we played games using tally marks.

This week, we have been looking at the fairytale, ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We listened very carefully to the story and we were able to answer questions about it. On Wednesday, we made fantastic puppets. We worked well in our groups and made sure that everyone had a part to play. On Thursday, we retold the story using our puppets and put on a spectacular puppet show! Miss Harrison was very proud of us!

P7b Blog

Hello,

It’s been another busy week in P7b, so we’ll use our summarising skills to give you a quick round up of the action.

In numeracy we have been consolidating our learning of decimals and money. We began by making the link to our previous work on fractions before ordering and sequencing them. As well as this, we have been adding, subtracting, multiplying and even dividing decimals which was very tricky at first. But after lots of practise, we think we’ve got the hang of it! We have been applying our knowledge of money across the curriculum by planning a trip to Rio as our homework task. Mr. Logan challenged us to calculate the total cost for him to travel to Rio for a week next summer, providing details of accommodation and interesting places to visit whilst there.

We have been reading Grandpa’s Great Escape by David Walliams as our class novel and focused on metalinguistics skills in reading on Tuesday. Whilst reading, we identified ambitious adjectives in the story and found synonyms and antonyms for these words using a thesaurus. Who would have known that similar words for elderly could be crinkly, wrinkly and senile! In writing we edited the first drafts of our Rio Olympics newspaper articles and typed up final drafts of these on the Netbooks. It was great to relive the moments when Murray, Farah and Kenny won gold medals for Team GB and tied in nicely with our IDL theme, Brazil.

Speaking of Brazil, we are now 2 weeks into our 6 week block of futsal (a South American variation of football) on a Wednesday. With our specialist coach Neil, we have been transferring what we have learnt with Mr. Logan in football to develop our futsal skills. Developed in Uruguay, futsals are slightly smaller and heavier than a size 5 football and encourage close control, passing and individual creativity. This week, we also split into groups to prepare presentations, acting as both the Scottish and Brazilian tourism boards. We then presented to the class, comparing and contrasting the two countries, in an attempt to persuade people to visit each country. You can see the Brazilian fact files that we created on our IDL wall in class, come and have a look! Did you know, for example, that a rhino once ran in a city council election in Brazil?

Mr. Logan may not be with us next week as his baby is due on Monday 10th October, however, we’ll be back and raring to go for another fun-filled week! Remember, parents’ evenings are on Wednesday and Thursday and the P7 House Leaders and Captains will be given duties each night.

Thanks for reading.

P7b and Mr. L
