P1A are reading!

This week we have been learning addition facts for 2, 3, 4 and 5. We looked at all the different ways to make these numbers.

Our new sounds this week were ‘c’, ‘k’ and ‘ck’. We used these sounds, along with the other sounds we already know, to spell and read lots of words. This week, we all had reading books with words! We have been working really hard with our reading & have been practising our common words.

Cracking Reading by P1B

We’ve been Busy, busy again! We had fun at the end of the day on Monday, dookin’ for apples which we gobbled up straight after, enjoying the novelty of eating in class.

We have been reading our new reading books with our reading groups several times this week.  We are really good at reading the words aloud and are working hard to listen as others read and we follow the words on the page. We also share our ideas and opinions on the story and listen to those of others.  We chose the names of our reading groups ourselves and have decided on Elephants, Pandas, Polar Bears and Kangaroos – four fantastic names!

We have also been working hard using the sounds c, k and ck. We have been writing quite a bit in our jotters too, sounding out sentences using all the sounds we know and learning how to leave a space between words as well as trying to write on the line.

We are trying to get outside as much as possible when the weather is good.  We visited the outdoor classroom again on Monday and practised our ‘c’ sound.  We left a large stone ‘c’ on the ground as a surprise for others to see when they come in, but we won’t tell them it was us!

We practised our common words in the gym this week, enjoying the big space to run around and make a lot of noise as we played games to learn the words.

We have been looking more closely at adding, learning all the addition sums for numbers to 5.  We are really pretty good at saying all the sums that add to 2 and 3 and will be working on 4 and 5 next week.  We’re also working on a wall display so we can use this to help us as we work.  Mrs Kennedy has lots more games planned for next week to help us to learn all the number facts.

Mrs Kennedy has just downloaded the songs for our nativity The Innkeepers Breakfast,  we will start learning them on Monday, Christmas is about to begin in P1B!

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

P4B’S Amazing Week!

Dear All

We won class of the week for our great effort at the rugby on Wednesday. We had a fantastic time! Thank you to Mrs Gardner and Kyle from the rugby club for helping us to walk there and back. Thanks also to Mrs Woolsey, Mr Crawford and Mrs Matheson for offering to help.

In maths we have been learning to divide using remainders. We have also been learning how to multiply 2 digit numbers and learn to tell the time.

In literacy we have been learning to make a poem that rhymes .We have also been learning how to use commas in a list.

In Health and Well-being we started to learn social dancing. We practised the Dashing White Sergeant. We also talked about how things can seem easy and exciting at first. Then we come across a dip e.g. a problem or lack of motivation and how to overcome it.

In learning across the curriculum we have been continuing with outdoor learning and have started our new interdisciplinary learning based on the Hairy McHaggis books.

Thank you to everyone who has signed up for class dojo. Mrs McAlpine has not used it before to communicate with parents before so please be patient for responses. Messages will be put on the blog each week.

Sophie and Joseph’s Hard Work!

Here is a blog post written by Sophie White in P5A…

Eczema Outreach Scotland

Joseph and I have been working really hard last term to raise money for Eczema Outreach Scotland. We wanted to do it because a lot of people experience eczema. We decided that I would make a hamper and Joseph would hop the width of the pitch and every child in our school would get a chance to guess how many hops Joseph did. We even had a stall at Parent’s night and lots of people had a guess then. We raised £100.40!!!

Marshall from Primary 7 won the hamper- well done, Marshall! Marshall guessed 60, which was the closest to 61.

Mrs McCartney was very proud of us both!

We had an informative visit to the Loch, where we learned about the animals in the Loch and how they link together in food chains.

We also used the binoculars to identify some of the birds that are found on the Loch.

P6B’s Week by Abby and Amy

We have had a busy week! This week we have been learning…

  • Speech marks in grammar, we learned that we take a new paragraph when a new character speaks. ” “
  • In French we were learning how to say Ma Famille, eg. My grandparents – Mes grand-parents, My aunt – Ma tante, My uncle – Mon oncle.
  • We learnt about the water cycle, we did a diagram and we learnt what evaporation, condensation and precipitation means.
  • In maths we have been doing l-lowest c-common m-multiples and our times tables. To remember them we played a multiple madness game, eg one person rolls two dice and adds the numbers together. Next you get 20 counters each and a board with numbers 1-100. When you add the two dice together numbers 1-100. When you add the two dice together you should get a number between 2-12 and that tells you your table. Once you have got your tables you are ready to start playing. We loved this game 🙂
  • On Thursday we went to the Peel down at the loch with two rangers to learn about animals living in the loch. We played two games called the stickleback game and the food chain game. After that we got into pairs and went bird watching, we saw mainly seagulls on the loch but there were other birds as well.
  • In science with Mrs Tulloch we were learning about renewable and non-renewable fuels.

P5B – Stars in the making.

Time goes by so quickly when you having fun! Already at the end of another week, and so much was done!

With a spooky start to the week, the children were hyped up and ready for Halloween on Monday, but before any trick or treating could be done we had a lovely walk to the Peel to meet the rangers. We had a fun morning, bird watching and learning about the life cycles around the loch as well as where the birds migrate to over the winter. The children had great fun working together to bird watch and play some fun games with the rangers.peel4

In numeracy this week we looked at rounding. We discussed how we use rounding everyday to make numbers more ‘friendly’ so that they can be easier to calculate. We went on a rounding hunt around the classroom looking for numbers that round up or down to the nearest 10s. We also worked in groups to illustrate on a number line which numbers round up or down to the nearest 10.

We have been learning about war and remembrance. In literacy we learnt about the three most famous war poets. We worked on the netbooks to do some  research on one of the war poets of our choice and we then created a fact file about the war poet. We enjoyed reading some of their poems, the poems gave us more insight about what it was like during the war.

We have been very lucky this week to have two guest speakers come along to talk to us. On Wednesday Esme’s dad, who was in the RAF ,came and shared his experiences with us. It was lovely to hear his stories and he was very kind to answer all our questions. On Thursday we had a war veteran from Legion Scotland come along and talk to both the Primary 5s and Primary 7s. We have been very fortunate to have this opportunity to hear all these stories from people who  have had experience in the war.

The highlight of our week was creating and filming our two minute documentaries about the role that veterans have played when they served in the Royal Navy , Army or RAF.  We are going to be entering our short films into the ‘Film of Remembrance’ competition, we have worked very hard on these films, so fingers crossed, and watch this space!!

So what will we do next week?

Autumn has arrived!

Welcome back! We hope everyone had a lovely October holiday.

This week we jumped straight back into our learning and had a very busy week. In Literacy we had a consolidation week, revising all of the sounds we learnt last term and applying our knowledge to different contexts. We were ‘diving for digraphs’, reading Yes/No questions and writing CVC words.

img_5331 img_5333 img_5334 img_5335 img_5336 img_5337 img_5341 img_5342

We also received a very kind gift from a friend of Miss Mudd. The MacDougall family kindly gave us a beautiful doll’s house to play with, as well as some jigsaws and games. We have loved playing with it and we are very grateful.

In Numeracy we were introduced to addition and learnt about the language and symbols that we use when adding. We have practised with lots of concrete materials and Miss Mudd was amazed at how quickly we all picked it up. The Primary 2 group were using TU frames to partition numbers and were using this knowledge to help with their addition.

For the next 2 weeks, we are doing an Outdoor Learning focus and P1/2 are learning all about different seasons throughout the year. We have been looking at Autumn so got the clipboards out and went on a nature walk to see what we could find. We collected lots of leaves, looking at the different shapes and colours. We then used these leaves to create hedgehog pictures. We had some great discussions about Autumn and thoroughly enjoyed getting out of the classroom and into the local environment.

We hope you all have a lovely week.

Primary 1/2

Welcome back to P5B

We all enjoyed our October holidays,  but it is good to be back. We got to share our experiences with each other this week. It was lovely to hear what everyone  had been up to. We are all now ready for Term 2,  we have had a look at  our targets that we had set in Term 1 and we have now set ourselves some new and achievable targets for Term 2 focusing on Numeracy, Literacy and one non- academic target.

In Math this week we have been continuing taking part in ‘Number Talks’ we have been doing multiplication and using strings of problems and using various strategies to help us find the answer.  We are becoming more confident in ‘Number Talks’ even when Mrs Matos gives us some challenging problems to solve.

This week we had PE with Mrs Reid, we got to play some basketball, it was plenty of fun!

The highlight of the week  for Primary 5 was the visit from Tom and Geoff, two war veterans that took the time to come and talk to all the Primary 5s about life during the war. They were very interesting and even brought along with them a war watch and some old photos. Their visit and talk will really help us  with our documentaries that we will be filming.

We have also been busy this week promoting the Shoebox Appeal to the school. Please remember that this needs to be in by the 5th November.

Some things to remember this week: Linlithgow Peel trip is on Monday and we are  filming our Remembrance documentaries on Thursday 4th November – please remember to bring anything you wish to be in your documentary.

Looking forward to another week.

P5B and Mrs Matos

P7 Weekly Learning

brazil-1 brazil-2 brazil-3 brazil-4This week we have been very focused on Brazil. We have included it in PE, literacy, music and modern languages.

Both classes learnt some basic Portuguese, it was amazing to see the children make links with other languages they know and guess words when completing their jigsaw puzzles.

In PE we looked at samba dancing and a Rio 2 dance. The children enjoyed taking part and pretending to be Amazon creatures through dance moves.

On Friday we shared our knowledge of French with our P1 buddies by doing some singing and simple role play. It was lovely to see them interact and for our P7’s to show off what they know.
