P7 Christmas Fayre Enterprise Extravaganza

What a fantastic end result for the P7 enterprise project this year. Between the 2 classes the children split into groups of 4 or 5 and have spent time during the last 3 weeks on the project. Each team had to design, plan, advertise, manufacture and sell a product(s) or service at the Christmas Fayre. The children worked hard on costings and budgeting, and had to estimate how many of each product they expected to sell.

The Fayre was a great success and overall we made £850.73 net profit (in P7 alone). On Monday each group will calculate their team’s net profit and reflect on what worked well, and what would be done differently next time.

Many thanks to everyone who supported us. Here are a few photos of the teams at the Fayre.

Pupil Achievements…

Firstly for this week, a massive ‘well done’ to our school choir for learning our new school song! It is just amazing and you will all love it when it is performed for the first time at our Family Carol Service are St. Michael’s on the 19th. Thank you so much to Miss Prince and Mrs Hogg for writing the song and for getting all children ‘performance ready.’ You are all stars!

Here are some other pupil achievements:

R in P3 said her Brownie Promise recently and here she is with her certificate!

Here are a group of P2s with super Xmas writing:

Congratulations to C in P5 for continuing to perform well in football and to B who is also in P5. B recently gained her next belt in karate. A great effort from both!

News over the past two weeks…

We have had another couple of busy weeks at Springfield and Bonnytoun. The Christmas season is now well and truly upon us and the children are beginning to get very excited about the fun that lies ahead.

Last Friday we had a special assembly focusing on the GIRFEC Wellbeing Indicator of ‘being nurtured.’ We spoke about how we do our best to ensure that every pupil at Springfield and Bonnytoun feels nurtured and cared for. Jessie even got a shout out for the nutritious food that she feeds to all of our little tummies each day! We are grateful to you Jessie and all of your team!

Our certificate winners from last week are shown below as well as two birthday girls from P1. Being five years old is such fun!

This week we were busy decorating our school and church Xmas trees with all of the decorations that pupils have made. Thank you so much to all mums and dads who helped their child to make a decoration. If you have had the chance to go to St. Michael’s to view our trees then I am sure that you will agree that they are beautiful. There is something very heart-warming about seeing children’s decorations hung on a tree at  Christmas-time. I was very proud of my two little helpers who helped with the trees. Thanks you girls for your help!

Here is a picture from our P1 and P2 Nativity. Again, we were all so proud of our wonderful children. They are all little stars! Thank you so much to all of the adults who helped to make this year’s performance a great success. We do hope that you enjoyed it if you came along!

A massive thank you to all of our PTA who helped to organise a fantastic Xmas Fayre  yesterday. A huge amount of money was raised for our school and this will be carefully spend to benefit all pupils.

More news coming next week…

Kind wishes and many thanks for your continued support,

Miss Baillie xxx❄️

P4 Class week beginning 4th December 2017

In preparation for the christmas fayre, the P4 class further explored addition and subtraction using money.  The children also learnt about distribution of workload while making their christmas craft.  They were split  into five groups and all had designated jobs to do.  Some worked on  advertising (posters), a few were in charge of pricing.  The rest of the pupils were involved in the creation and quality control of the products.

For numeracy, the children were learning about 4 digit place value.  They used concrete materials to understand the concept even more.

For Literacy, the P4s focused on learning to spell words with ‘ou’ sounds.  They aslo revisited how to change a question into a sentence.

For Comprehension,   they had to look for context clues.

For Grammar, the focus was on writing words in plural form.

Lastly, for Health and Well- being, the focus was on appropriate response to different types of  emotions.

I am very proud of the P4s for all their hard work .  The reindeers were tricky to make but they  were determined to push thtough the challenge.” – Miss Durano

Thank you to all who participated in the christmas fayre!

Primary 6B – 8th December 2017

This week, Primary 6B have completed comic strips showing the feelings and emotions of Via (a character from our class novel ‘Wonder’). I’m sure you’ll agree that these look great!

As part of our RME, we have been looking at Christmas Traditions. We created our own Christingles and explored the significance of each part as we made them.

Our art this week has involved working with oil pastels and water colours to create toucans. These images show the pupils hard at work on this project.

We are looking forward to our outreach visit next week from the team at the Scottish Parliament – with lots to learn there too!

Have a lovely weekend,

Nativity Week

Most of the week we have been doing our Nativity Performances. The children have been fantastic and have sung their little hearts out. I was very proud of them as I’m sure you all were. Very well done P2B, you deserve a big pat on the back.

In Maths we have started on subtraction up to 20, although some children are working beyond this.

We have written our letters to Santa, so he’s going to very busy.

And today we have been selling our ribbon Christmas trees and tea lights. All of which were very successful. The children have also been making tree decorations for our school tree and the one in the church.

Have a good weekend everyone.

P2/3’s Crafty Christmas Creations

Well done to our Primary 2 Nativity super stars, what a fabulous show they put on!

Primary 3 have been busy making Kelpies out of clay, they are looking fantastic.

In Literacy this week we looked at the features of a poster. We made posters for our Christmas Stall, our success criteria was to:

  • include important information
  • use big, bold writing
  • use bright, eye catching colours
  • Include pictures of the product

In Maths we continued our work on addition and subtraction, looking at strategies to solve missing number sums. We are making the link between addition and subtraction to help us to do this. For example:

? + 10 = 15         15- 10 =

In Art we learnt about blending using chalks. We studied the Northern Lights and created beautiful pictures showing the Northern Lights over the Arctic. Then we followed step by step instructions on how to draw an arctic fox. We’re very proud of our pictures!

Here are some photos of our crafty Christmas creations:

Have a great weekend!

Love P2/3 and Miss Prince 🙂

P3 Week commencing 4th December 2017

On Monday in Maths we began looking at describing number patterns. By looking closely at the pattern of numbers we learned how to describe the pattern by saying how much the numbers were going up or coming down.  Using this information we were then able to work out the next set of numbers in the pattern.

In the afternoon we were invited to see the P1/2 Nativity dress rehearsal. We all enjoyed listening and singing along to all the fantastic songs.  We also had to say farewell to our student teacher, Miss Stevenson who has finished her placement with us and is returning to Edinburgh University to complete her course. We would like to thank her for all her hard work and assistance and wish her well in her future career in teaching.

On Friday we took part in the Christmas Fayre by selling our fantastic Christmas stars and baubles which we have been busy making as part of our enterprise activity. We then had an opportunity to visit all the other stalls with members of our family and buy some of the amazing products, cakes, sweets, ornaments and raffle tickets on sale.

What has P6A been up to?

We have been very busy over the last two weeks with a wide range of learning opportunities.

Each week we like to spend some time doing some active spelling to help reinforce our weekly spelling words. We have enjoyed playing a variety of spelling games, such as spelling splat, scrabble as well as a fun spelling board game that helps us to learn different spelling rules.

We’ve been using a protractor in Maths to measure angles. Mrs Matos put tape on the white boards and we worked together with a partner to measure all the angles we could find. Moving on this week, we have been concentrating on number, number sequence and staring to look at balancing equations.

We continue to read our novel, Wonder. The author added a twist to the story and changed the narrator, so that we can see how the story unfolds through another characters eyes. This inspired us to create our own comic. We used the netbooks and a program called, Comic Life. Before using our imaginations, we learned about the main features of a comic and what all the different types of speech bubbles mean. This really helped us to create some really interesting and creative comic strips.

With Christmas quickly    approaching we have been spending some time learning about advent and the Christmas story.  We had some fun creating our own Christingles . To continue with the Christmas spirit we worked along with P6B to create some nativity hall displays. We made some very festive donkeys and a manger.

We’ve been very busy learning about the Scottish Parliament. We are able to distinguish between a democracy and a dictatorship. We have also learned about devolved and reserved matters.

Last week was Scottish Book week. We spent some time reading Katie Morag to our P2 Pals.

We looking very forward to the Christmas Fayre, we have made some candy cane reindeers and Christmas rubric cubes.

Primary 3/4 Blog Week Ending 7.12.17

Dear All

This week in literacy we did the ‘ou’ exception sounds. We talked about our achievements at show and tell. We read in our groups and had personal reading time. Mrs McAlpine read us the ‘Lost Prince’, one of our Hamish McHaggis books. We listened to Mrs McAlpine reading out words and sentences and we tried to write them out with correct spelling and punctuation. We learned plurals and that words ending in ch, sh, x or s need an ‘es’ at the end if there is more than one. We added adjectives to our sentences and underlined them in blue.

In numeracy we were learning about money and how to give change. We went shopping in the classroom and bought your crackers! Don’t worry we used fake money and your crackers are still there! We split into 2 groups and used 2 balls to learn our times tables. We used the netbooks to practise budgeting on Sumdog.

In health and wellbeing we enjoyed Scottish Dancing and danced the ‘Grand Old Duke of York’, the Canadian Barn Dance. We also played bench ball in PE.

In learning across the curriculum we made our crackers for enterprise to sell at the Christmas Fayre. They look gorgeous and they will make a loud bang! We also went to see the Nativity performance, it was amazing!

Hope you have a good weekend!
