Challenge week

This week we have been stretching our brains even more! Miss Mudd has set us lots of different challenges to apply our skills to different contexts.

In phonics we have been learning our consonant blends. We had lots of different stations set out to help us to read, say, write and make words using these blends.

In Maths we have been learning about money. It was Grannie Island’s birthday this week so we had to work in groups to plan a surprise birthday party for her. We had to make decisions about what we wanted to buy. We worked together to add up what we had spent and we had to stay within a certain budget. We then went on to design party invitations for Grannie Island. We developed so many skills through this task. We learnt how to budget, make decisions, calculate change, add up coins.

There was also a disaster on the island this week. The Redburn bridge had collapsed which meant Katie Morag could not deliver the post. We conducted a paper experiment to investigate how to make a structure stronger. By changing the shape of the paper, we learnt that it got stronger and could hold more cubes. We then used this learning to help us design a new Redburn Bridge. We worked in pairs to design and evaluate our bridges. We talked about what went well and what was tricky. We thought about how an engineer would design a bridge and how they would have to keep changing and adapting their ideas. During our free play time, Miss Mudd set out different materials and we had a go at making  more bridges. We showed great resilience when things got hard and didn’t quite go to plan!

In PE we were working on balance. We practised different types of balances, using different parts of our bodies. Our muscles worked hard to stay strong and still.

Primary 6B – 26th Jan 2018

This week we have looked at the sentence openers we use in our story writing and discovered that we usually use the same words over and over again to start our sentences. We have explored some other words that we could use instead and we are hoping that next week, our sentence openers in our stories will be much more exciting.

In maths we had to use our knowledge of factors, multiples and prime numbers to work out which factor bug had eaten Mrs Kerr’s chocolate!!!

Ask the children who it was and how they worked it out.

As part of our learning for Scot’s week, we have played Scot’s language bingo, recited our Scot’s Poems and explored the lives of The Scottish Colourists.

Yours

Burns Afternoon

This afternoon P2/3 and P3 enjoyed a Burns afternoon where they sang Scottish songs, recited their Scots poems, tasted shortbread and watched some highland dancing. We also listened to The Gruffalo in Scots, learned some Scots words and even learnt how to do the Dashing White Sergeant. The children did a super job learning their Scots poems and were very confident when performing them to the class. Well done boys and girls!

Homework grid and wk 10 spelling

Hi All

Hope you had a lovely weekend! Please see links above to this term’s learning overview, home learning plans and this week’s spelling. Tomorrow, the children will bring a paper copy of their learning overview home. They will have the term’s homework grid pasted into the cover of their home learning jotter and their spelling words pasted into the last page.

Can you ask your child to select an activity from the home learning grid each week. They should choose one numeracy and one literacy activity and are free to choose any of the other activities.

They should continue to read their class reading books each night and a different set of spelling words will be given each week.

As there are only 3 numeracy and reading tasks on the home learning grid, other tasks will be given out to supplement. Therefore every week the children will have the following home learning:

  • Reading books
  • Spelling list
  • Literacy task in jotter or one from grid (priority is from grid and only one task required)
  • Numeracy task in in jotter or one from grid (priority is from grid and only one task required)
  • Personal choice of additional task (may be completed any week)

In addition to the spelling words I will be giving out the 100 most used words for children to practise regularly.

This week children should do their reading and spelling lists. For numeracy can they go on sumdog to practice grid references or if you have a battle ships game they can practise through play?

Please let me know if you need me to clarify any of this information. No homework needs to be done till tomorrow. If you would prefer to have time over the weekend to work on home learning it is fine to leave handing in till Monday. Please just let me know. Home learning jotters, reading records and reading books should be brought to school every day.

Kind Regards

Louise

Springfield and Bonnytoun News…

Happy New Year and Happy New Term everyone! We have had a busy couple of weeks as we settle the children into term 3 of this session. Where does the time go!

You will notice that we have had some staff absence of late and Mr Wells and I continue to work hard to make decisions that will ensure that your child continues to make progress in their learning, despite staff being off. We understand that staff absence is difficult for everyone but please bear with us… we promise you that we continue to look after and prioritise the need of your children.

We have had two lovely assemblies recently where we have continued to work on our Vision, Values and Aims. Our Nursery children can all perform our ‘values actions’ and a special song to help them to remember the values.

Here are out latest certificates winners from assembly…

And our birthday stars including one of our sets of twins!

We also had a great visit by a musical group called Travelling By Tuba this week. The children across the school loved hearing different brass instruments and a piano being played as they were taken on a musical trip around the world. We value the Expressive Arts in our Curriculum and  recognise the importance of promoting a love of Music, Art, Dance and Drama in our children.

Our children have loved playing in the snowy weather this week and if you come into our school office, please take time to view some ‘snowy photos’ of your children playing in the playground, which we have displayed in our main entrance-way. Thank you to Mrs Hutton for her help with this.

Finally here is the very sweet R in P2 with her Highland dancing achievement! Well done R! You are always smiling and we love you for it!

Have a great Sunday everyone and stay warm! ❄️⛄️

Love Miss Baillie xxx💖

P4 Class

We have had an exciting week as we had the ‘ Travelling by Tuba’ musical duo.  They conducted  an interactive musical performance with the children on Wednesday.  Then, NYCOS came on Thursday afternoon to give  us some music lessons.

For Literacy, we have been learning to use commas, exclamation and question marks.   We have also been changing questions into statements.

For Numeracy, we have been learning to subtract 2 digits from 2 digit numbers.  We learnt how to check our subtraction answers through addition.  We played games and did a lot of individual work.  We revisited our number bonds as well as place value.

For Health and Well- being, our focus this term is- seeking support if/ when bullied.  We spoke about who our friends are at school and how individual gain support from others.

IDL this term is concentrated on Scottish music.  We have been listening to the ‘Flower of Scotland’  song and what it meant.   We have also started our research on Vikings as this also another exciting focus this term.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

P5B Week beginning 15th January 2018

In Maths this week we have been using our knowledge of number, co-ordinates, time, addition and subtraction to solve some Murder Mystery Maths worded problems. The children worked in teams as Maths detectives to work through the clues using their maths skills to find the culprit.

To start off our Scottish topic we held a brainstorming session to find out how much we knew about famous Scottish artists and inventors.  We also thought about the different ways we could learn and find out information about these famous people.  Next week we will start looking at the work of the famous Scottish artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

On Wednesday we had a visit from “Travel by Tuba” who entertained us by demonstrating a range of instruments and playing a variety of songs which we could sing along to.

In writing we used a picture of a *mysterious door” as a stimulus for writing an imaginative story and working on improving our VCOP strategies to help us with our writing. After this we also reviewed our writing targets and set new ones for this term.

We have also been taking part in some “getting to know you” activities with Mr Ritchie who has now taken over the class.

Our new reading books have been issued and we will begin to explore the stories and the techniques used by the different authors next week in our reading groups.

We also challenged ourselves on Friday by completing mental maths activities using BIG Maths.

P6A Blog                                                                                          9.1.18 – 19.1.18

1st Week

On Tuesday, we were learning that letters can replace missing numbers in calculations. After lunch, we did some Go Noodle with P6B. We also went down to the nursery to teach them our visions, values and aims, and then we started creating posters, linking to our visions, values and aims for the nursery. Our learning intention was to make a poster that is clear enough for the nursery to understand.

On Wednesday, we continued working on our posters for the nursery, and we did more work on using letters in calculations. We also started solving equations using letters. For literacy, we did a pre-read of our new class novel, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. After that we had P.E. with Mrs Reid. In the afternoon, we went to P2 to help them research either snowy owls or JOLOMO.

On Thursday, we solved some more equations using algebra in numeracy. We had visits from a few special visitors in science, who were talking to us about renewable energy. After lunch, we went to the Lion King preparations.

On Friday, we had the Lion King preparations all day.

2nd Week

On Monday, we played spelling games. In Literacy we predicted what would happen in our new class novel, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, by answering question on the Smart Board. Then we read the first two chapters. We wrote down all the tests of divisibility in our How-to jotter, (for example, 2’s – even and can be halved. 4’s – even and can be halved twice.) In Spanish, we practiced our key greetings in Spanish with a partner, and we watched a video to re-inforce our learning. Then we learned about the different states of water.

On Tuesday, we learnt about factors using factors bugs, and we were learning about openers in our writing. In Maths, we were learning to create a set of multiples and find common multiples between tables. After lunch, we learned the basic skills in hockey.

On Wednesday, we were learning to identify factors, and then we worked with P6B on our Scottish poems, which need to be learnt by the 24th January. We worked with our  P2 pals, to teach them about money in the environment on the netbooks.

On Thursday, we had a visit from Mr Moon, who used to work in renewables. He showed some interesting videos, including how the 45m long blades get delivered! Then The Travelling Tuba came in and showed (and played!) tubas from all around the world. After lunch we went to the Lion King.

On Friday, we had lots of Lion King Preparations, learning all the tricky songs, we went to assembly and Miss Baillie gave us class of the week. We finished our day with some well-deserved golden time .

Transport and Transport Museums (P1A)

This week we finished learning our number bonds to 10 and completed our work on how to solve missing number equations. We have started to look at numbers to 20. We began with counting to 20 and sequencing the numbers to 20. We put our number pebbles in the correct sequence, found missing numbers on a number line, played a sequencing game on the smartboard and completed dot to dot patterns to 20.

This week our new sounds were ‘y’ and ‘z’. We were very excited as we have now learned all of our initial sounds! We made ‘y’ with play dough and rainbow writing, practised writing uppercase and lowercase letters, made our own yellow submarines and played ‘Yellow Yo-Yo’ on Education City. When learning about ‘z’, we made ‘z’ with shells and wooden blocks, practised writing ‘z’ with colourful pens, wrote ‘z’ and ‘z’ words on our whiteboards and made our own buzzing bees!

This week we started to talk about what we already know about transport. We knew that there are lots of different types of vehicles, that transport takes you anywhere you want to go, that tractors have lots of engine parts and that some cars run on oil or electricity. We then told Miss Harrison what we would like to learn about transport. In pairs, we worked together to make houses and different types of transport for our classroom display. We used our cutting skills to cut out different shapes and used a variety of materials to make our display. Doesn’t it look great! We have also started to turn our role play area into a transport museum. We have a ticket office, an area to learn about transport and we even have a café!

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂
