Springfield and Bonnytoun News…

Another busy week has been and gone at Springfield and Bonnytoun, ending with our Scottish assembly last Friday. During assembly,  we talked about what we think of when we say the word “Scotland” and what it means to be Scottish. We then sang some Scottish songs such as ‘Yeh cannae shove yer granny aff a bus’ and ‘Three Craws.’

Our Primary Seven children all received certificates for their achievements over the past while in skiing. It has been a pleasure to take these children to Hillend and watch their confidence grow on the slopes.

We sang our birthday song to Lucy in P3 and presented our Values certificates to a host of children.

Here is A in P5 with her cheerleading achievement from this week…

Next week most classes will begin their Social Subjects, interdisciplinary learning focus which has a historical context. I wonder what your child’s class will choose to learn about? We continue to work hard to let all children make choices in and lead the direction of their learning . I hope too, that you have now  received your child’s ‘Sharing the Learning’ sheet from their class teacher to keep you up-to-date with planned learning.

Speak to you all next week. Have a good one!

Love Miss Baillie xx💖

Weekly News P7a

Numeracy

This week we started our new topic of “Information and Data Handling”. We realised there were lots of links to real life, and reasons why we need to learn the skills to present and interpret data. In this first week we have been selected the best graph to display our data and drawing frequency tables and graphs.

Literacy

Hamburger paragraphs were a key feature this week, essentially allowing us to structure and create quality paragraphs. The initial or topic sentence introducing the concept is the “top bun”, the details are the “fillings and burger” and the conclusion or ending is the “bottom bun”. We all wrote “hamburger paragraphs” and peer assessed them.

After the fantastic Stem Engineer interviews last week, we revisited our notes and made a start on a report about engineering. There was lots of decision making required as we had to decide which were the key ideas, and how to present these using sub-headings in a report. Some of us realised we had not taken enough/detailed enough notes during the interviews, which made it difficult to plan a report. Luckily we all worked together to share our key information and make sure that everyone then had the key facts.

French and Spanish

J’aime et je n’aime pas…were the focus of French this week, where we learned how to say what we like and dislike. In Spanish we started to learn “los numeros de 0-50” by singing a catchy song. We noticed that there were similarities to English and French numbers.

IDL Social Studies – Creative Scots

This week we worked in our decades to finalise the planning and creation of our lessons for next week. Each group was given a decade from the 70’s until current day and have been tasked with becoming the teachers, and teaching their classmates and Mrs Gordon about Scottish music and musicians in that decade. This week involved lots of planning of lessons and creation of activities. We can’t wait to learn all about it next week…

An adventurous week in P6A!!

Another week gone in a flash, and with so much fun learning opportunities, who can be surprised that it is already the end of another week.

We’ve had a busy week in Literacy this week. Looking back at previous writing tasks, we identified the types of sentence openers we have been using. During this task we realised that majority of our sentence openers have been some what boring and that we needed to make them more adventurous. True to Mrs Matos’ style, she dressed up in ‘adventurous’ outfits to demonstrate how interesting our openers need to be, so that our writing is not predictable to our reader. We also went on an adventurous sentence opener hunt, where we had to find fairy doors around the classroom, open them up and find some outstanding openers that we can use in our writing. A very strange message appeared on our board from one of the fairies, I strange pink parcel had arrived in the school, the fairy asked us to write a newspaper report about the strange parcel, her instructions were very clear, that our report needed to answer the questions, who, what, when, where and why and most importantly we needed to use adventurous sentence openers. Mrs Matos was very pleased to read our reports and was very impressed with the variety of sentence openers that were used.  We have been developing our comprehension skills in reading. We have been using our hands to help us to identify the main idea in a text. We use our hands to help us, as each finger on our hand is a question that the main idea would answer , such as, who, what, where, when and why. The mysterious journey of Edward Tulane is currently the class novel that we have been reading. We have only read the first few chapters, but we are already drawn into the story. Edward is a character in the story. We created our own interpretation of Edward and we wrote adjectives and similes that we thought best described him. We have been teaching Mrs Matos some Scots language, we recited some poems, Mrs Matos was very impressed with our ability to remember such lengthy poems and the expression and effort we put into reciting our poems. Playing Scots language Bingo, helped us to translate and learn some Scots words, it was great fun…Mrs Matos continues to need support with this !

In Numeracy we continued to work with multiples, factors and prime numbers. We played a game of True and false, and had to prove our answer, and try use mathematical language to convince Mrs Matos that our answer was correct. Growing in confidence we continue to  share strategies and talk about numbers during Number talks.  We have started to work on negative numbers. We discussed how negative numbers are used in the real world, such as banks, temperature and elevators. To test our prior knowledge with negative numbers, we played a fun negative Artic Adventures game.

During PE with Mrs Matos we continued to practice our hockey skills, we practiced holding the stick correctly , ball control and shooting. With Mrs Reid we continue to learn volleyball skills.

Scottish Colourist has been our focus this week. We spent some time using the netbooks to research about Scottish colourists. We have started to practice sketching a still life, this is a lot trickier than it seems, but with resilience we are committed to continue practising, and later we will be painting our sketches.

Kindness and inclusion are two of our school values, this week we used these two values and played some educational games with our P2 pals, we are learning that  by being kind and inclusive that we are able to have fun with all children at Springfield Primary no matter what age.

Mrs Matos and P6a would like to say a Big thank you to Paul who was very confident in sharing a PowerPoint all about his sister and her needs. Paul, you are a very special big brother and you can be so proud of yourself – Well Done, and thank you!

5B Week commencing 22nd January 2018

In Maths we have been working on calculations involving money and finding out the cost of different items and then working out the various ways we could give change. In addition to this we have also been revising our rounding skills by rounding up the cost of different items and estimating the total cost.

On Wednesday we went to the handball festival at Linlithgow Academy. It was very exciting playing all the cluster primaries and there was excellent sportsmanship and skills displayed. We were exhausted by the time we got back to school. We are not sure yet of the final results so watch this space for further news!

In Literacy this week we listened to and then selected Scottish poems to learn. We will then recite these next week, to our class and other classes in the school to showcase our Scottish language skills.

We also looked at the work of the Scottish writer Lari Don who wrote a book entitled “The Secret of the Kelpie”. We listened to her reading an extract from the book and discussed how she built “suspense” into the story.  We used these techniques to write a story based on the Kelpie, or a mythical creature of our own choice.  Some of us challenged ourselves even further by writing a poem.

In Science we are continuing on work started in P4 on floating and sinking and we are now up levelling to look at the force of buoyancy after having completed work on gravity and air resistance.

On Friday we practised our mental mats skills by completing the BIG Maths challenge and also tested our spelling patterns which we learned for homework.

The whole class was super when our visitors came to see us and spoke knowledgably about the work they had been doing and were able to answer their questions confidently.

Have a super weekend!

Mr Ritchie and P5B

All Aboard with P1B!

P1B have had a busy couple of weeks!  Our transport topic is well underway, we started by investigating trains.  All of the children have really been enjoying it.  We have made a train and created a train station and cafe in our classroom.  We have also got a train set in the class  which has proved to be very popular too.

Some excellent writing on our train information board.

Some bridge building as part of our trains topic.  We also worked in pairs to make bridges using junk, plastic cups, lollypop sticks, glue and selotape.  The children had to plan with their partner and they worked well together. Almost all of the bridges met the criteria – a train must be able to go along the top and a boat must fit underneath.  It was so busy that I didn’t get a chance to take one photo!

Here are some bridges built during play using wooden blocks.

Train oil pastel pictures.

When I asked the children what they would like to learn about trains, many of them said they want to know more about how they move, we began looking into this by looking at forces, rolling and friction to investigate wheels and the best surfaces for a train to run on.  We tried our train on different surfaces and found that a smooth flat one was best and that tracks were even better.

We also investigated rolling and tried to roll different shapes and sizes of objects.

We have also looked at the history of trains and will be looking more closely at steam engines next week.

In maths we have begun to look at numbers to 20 and beyond.  We have been counting objects up to 20, ordering the numbers forwards and backwards and filling in the missing numbers.

We used Numicon to learn about place value – using the parts to see that ‘teen’ numbers are 10 plus some units.

In outer maths we have been data handling.  this week we were sorting objects, making up our own criteria to get them into categories.  This was a big hit and the children have sorted lots of things around the classroom!  They did a great job.

Finally, some lovely photos of the children playing in the snow last week 🙂 It was great fun!

F won the ‘Golden Boot’ for his excellent football skills – Well done!

Enjoy your weekend, P1B and Mrs Kennedy

5A Week commencing 22nd January 2018

This week in Primary 5A we have been studying the life and work of Charles Rennie Macintosh. We have looked at his paintings, furniture and architecture. We practised different techniques and experimented with colour to paint our own Macintosh style paintings. We got into our own art zone listening to relaxation music while working and our VSE visitors were really impressed with our artistic talents.

At IT we had researched Macintosh and then had the choice of working with a partner to produce a power point or word document about his life and work. Next week well will be presenting these to our peers and we will be giving good constructive feedback.

Our handball festival was very exciting playing all the cluster primaries and there was excellent sportsmanship and skills displayed. We were exhausted by the time we got back to school.

During our literacy work we also discussed and chose Scottish poems to learn and we will recite these next week to our class and then other classes in the school.

Money is the main focus for maths and we have used different notes and coins to give change. It would be great if the pupils had opportunities at the shops to practise working out their own change.

In Science we are continuing on work started in P4 on floating and sinking and we are now up levelling to look at the force of buoyancy after having completed work on gravity and air resistance.

The pupils were super when our visitors were in and spoke knowledgably about their work and were able to answer all their questions confidently.

Thank you.

Primary 2B

Just to recap on last week – the highlight being the visit from. “TravellingTuba” – a musical pair who introduced the children to musical instruments from other countries as well as demonstrating them. The children then did a workshop with them and performed in front of the other infants. It was a fantastic experience for them and one which they really enjoyed.

In Maths we were working on money and identifying coins up to £1, as well as adding them.

We looked at the work of Scottish artist Steven Brown and produced our own Crazy Giraffes.

The children have really enjoyed reading”Into the Forest” by Anthony Browne and w e have begun to some work from it.

This week we have had visitors in the school and they have been very impressed with our children at Springfield.

We have continued our work on “Into the Forest”” and written diary entries pretending we were the little boy in the story. Some brilliant writing and we have also done some collage work connected to the story.

We have continued our work on money and have started doing some budgeting. Very impressive and super communication in their group work.

The children worked on constructing bridges and discussed what made a strong bridge. We talked about what made a fair test.

We have begun learning footballing skills in “Futsal” which the children are really enjoying.

Have a good weekend everyone and may this lovely sunshine continue.

If I Built a Car (P1A)

This week we were learning to use our sounds to write words and sentences. We read the story ‘If I Built a Car’ and we talked about what our cars would be like if we could build a car. We wrote sentences to describe our cars using a capital letter, full stop and finger spaces. We had lots of good ideas!

This week we were finding out about different ways in which transport has changed from past to present. We looked at pictures of transport from the past and sorted different types of transport correctly in order onto a timeline. We played with our train set and made tickets, used our cars and car repair sheets to be mechanics and played in our transport museum.

This week our new sounds were ‘sh’ and ‘ch’ and our new common words were ‘go’ and ‘we’. We made ‘sh’ with shells and play dough, used our Ipad to help us write ‘sh’ words, played Roll & Read to practise reading ‘sh’ words and wrote ‘sh’ words and sentences. When learning ‘ch’, we drew ‘ch’ pictures, labelled ‘ch’ pictures, played ‘Cheeping Chicks’ on Education City and wrote ‘ch’ words and sentences.

This week we have been learning to sequence numbers forwards and backwards to 20. We have been finding missing numbers on a number line, ordering our number pebbles from 20 to 0, playing sequencing and ordering games on the smartboard and making numbers to 20 using tens and units.

In numeracy and maths, we have also been learning to sort objects & pictures in different ways. We sorted information on a Carroll Diagram in our workbooks. We also sorted shells, loose parts and toys according to their size, colour or shape and we were able to explain to Miss Harrison how we had sorted the items.

This week we also won ‘Class of the Week’.  Thank you very much for reading our blog post and we hope that everyone has a lovely weekend.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

Primary 3/4 Blog Week Beginning 22.1.18

Dear All

This week in literacy we did a spelling test on the soft g and the hard g sound. We also did the mp, nd and ng sounds. We learned about common nouns and proper nouns.

In French we made a mind map of ourselves, the people who are important to us, our pets and our hobbies, then we wrote the French words.

In numeracy we did grid references using battleships, zoos, maps and a giant floor map of Scotland. We also learned double and near doubles playing a dinosaur game. We practised our times tables and got up to our 7 times table in 5 minutes.

In health and wellbeing we played Gaelic football in the wing. We had lots of visitors in to see our learning and they said we were very focused and amazing!

In learning across the curriculum we researched different tartans and made up our own tartans. We practised for our assembly next week. We started thinking about what we would like to know about the Vikings as we are starting our new topic next week.
