P1B – From making dough to collecting trophies!

Another week has raced by!  At the beginning of the week we had a visit to the school kitchen to make play dough.  It was good fun, following the recipe, checking we had the right ingredients, measuring them out and then the tricky part – mixing it together, it was very sticky!  Our dough is lovely and soft and squidgy and we’ve used it a lot to make our sounds and words.

As the nights are getting longer, we’ve also been learning about how the earth moves to create night and day.

We’re continuing to look at addition in numeracy, looking at adding three sets of numbers together and are beginning to look at adding larger numbers.

We completed our study of Jack and the Flumflum Tree on Friday.  When Mrs Kennedy came back from break she had a terrible dose of the moozles, she must have caught them from granny!

Mrs Kennedy also had the sack that granny gave Jack, all the things in the sack helped us to retell the story and put them in the correct order as we sequenced the story too.  We also spoke a little about why Jack says ‘don’t get your knickers in a twist’ and discussed what we can do when we are faced with a problem.

We also got fantastic news on Friday – we are class of the week for a second time and were also the class who have been the most sensible when walking around the school this week.  We got an extra long breaktime as a reward.

Jack and the Flum Flum Tree

This week we started our book focus by looking at ‘Jack and the Flum Flum Tree’. We used our predicting skills to try and guess what would happen in the story. We used clues from the front cover, blurb and first page. We then had to create a mental picture of what we thought the Isle of Blowyernose looked like. Here are some examples of our imaginative islands.

In Literacy this week we have been revising all of the sounds we have learnt so far. We have been practising our sounds in many different ways using lots of sensory approaches.

img_5599 img_5600 img_5601 img_5602

We have also been working hard on our common words this week. We used the spelling stones, scrabble tiles and crabs to help us write our tricky words. We have been doing lots of sentence reading using our digraphs. Miss Mudd even forgot to put some of the words in the sentences so we had to identify the correct word to put in.

In Numeracy we have been consolidating our knowledge of number facts. Some of us were working within 10 and others up to 20.

img_5591 img_5597 img_5617 img_5592 img_5594 img_5595

Some of us have even been working on numbers to 100! The numbers got all jumbled up so we had to get them all back in the correct order.

img_5615 img_5612

This week Miss Mudd has also been using our new choosing board. Different activities are set out on each table and each table has been given a number. We have to put our names on the station we want to work at and do the tasks that have been set. We then get a chance to change stations and try other activities.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Primary 1/2

A day to remember

Miss Mudd was very proud us on Friday for showing respect during the remembrance assembly. We all sat in silence for two minutes to remember those who gave their lives for us in the war. We were wearing our poppies with pride!

In Literacy this week we have been working hard to read and write all of our common words. We even linked this to our PE lessons playing some fun games with our words.

img_5493img_5489 img_5494 img_5487

We have also been practising our sentence writing. We have learnt how to use finger spaces and full stops.  We have been using our phoneme fingers to sound out our CVC words and then apply our work on letter formation.

img_5527 img_5528 img_5529 img_5530

We have been learning different spelling rules which is very tricky. Some of our digraphs make the same sound which can be confusing so we have been learning which digraph to use in our words. Shy ‘i’ doesn’t like all of the attention so he likes to go in the middle of words to stay safe. Toughy ‘y’ is very brave so he often likes to go at the end of words. There are, of course, some cheeky words who do not follow our rules!

img_5500 img_5501 img_5502-2 img_5504-2 img_5505-2 img_5536 img_5535 img_5539

Not only have we been listening to feedback from Miss Mudd but this week we have started to give feedback to each other. In pairs, we gave each other a star and a wish to help improve our sentences. Miss Mudd was very impressed with how supportive we were and said our feedback was very helpful.

In Numeracy this week we were continuing to work on addition. Some of us even took on the role of teacher and were teaching each other new strategies.

We have had different stations to move around this week to practise our number bonds. We are getting much faster at our recall and we are all beginning to apply our knowledge to different sums.

We finally finished our Autumn hedgehogs so here is a picture of the finished product….

P5A’s Remembrance Assembly

Well done to P5A and Mrs McCartney for their hard work in putting together a Remembrance Assembly which was held in School yesterday. The children talked about why we wear red poppies on Remembrance Day each year and P6B made a beautiful 3-D vase of poppies to display outside the Gym Hall on the day. Conflict resolution was a major theme of the assembly and Mrs McCartney has been working hard to teach her children about Peer Mediation and how to resolve conflict in a respectful way. We truly believe that this is a vital life skill and thank you to P5A for sharing this important message with us today. By treating each other kindly and with respect, even if we disagree, we can work together to make our world a peaceful place to live in.

Have a lovely weekend everyone,

Miss Baillie x

Achievements Wall

image

Here is our new Achievements Wall in School! It is located in the corridor between our Infant and Upper classrooms and is an area designated for the celebration of success. We will try hard to ensure that every child gets a chance for their ‘achievement’ to be displayed on this wall, throughout their School career. Achievements can be either related to success in School or at home. In addition, Fraser in P7B and Adam in P6B are undertaking a ‘young leaders’ task to put pupil achievements on our ‘big screen’ in the foyer each week. Please have a look at our achievements each time that you are in School. We truly are a talented bunch!

Quality Diners’ Table!

image

Here are the children, (minus Fraser who was finished eating by the time Miss Baillie had her camera ready!), who were chosen by their teachers to sit at our new Quality Diners’ Table this week. As part of our positive behaviour policy, launched in August, children who are trying really hard to follow our School rules will be chosen to sit at our special table to eat lunch on a Thursday. The table will alternate between Infant and Upper school children on a weekly basis. This week was a chance for our Upper School children to shine!  We really believe that all children deserve a chance to feel special so will work hard to try to give every child in School a chance to sit at the table at some point. The table system is being run by our P5 children as a ‘young leaders’  task. Promoting leadership at all levels and allowing our children to help in the running of our School is also something that we are committed to. We are sure you’ll agree that this week’s diners look particularly refined! Well done to all children who were chosen this week!

Primary 2’s week 31/10/16 – 4/11/16

Primary 2 have had another busy week. We began the week with a trip to The Peel. It was a beautiful Autumn morning and we met rangers Rosie and Will and they took us on a minibeast hunt. The children really enjoyed finding the different minibeasts and being able to identify them using the magnifying glasses. Thank you to the Mums who came with us.

The children have also made habitats for their clay/plasticine model woodland creatures.

We have created firework safety posters and learnt about the properties of 3D shapes.

Have a good weekend and keep safe. Photos of trip to Peel and animal habitats.

Another great week in P3!!

We have all been extremely busy this week in P3 learning lots of different things and celebrating a variety of achievements. This week Devon made an extremely detailed lego model of an oil rig, and presented his model to the class explaining how it works as well as its many features.

In maths this week we have been continuing to look at 2D shapes as well as identifying and creating symmetrical pictures. In literacy we began our non-fiction reading for this term by exploring the features of a variety of non-fiction books such as contents and index pages – we enjoyed creating presentations on the information we found out and presenting them to the rest of the class!

On Thursday we also looked at how to make a good informative poster through the theme of bonfire night and firework safety.

In addition, we have also been continuing with our outdoor focus ‘trees and our woodlands’. On Wednesday we collected lots of different leaves and used these to help us create our woodland animals in art.  On Thursday we went to the Peel with the rangers, where the children took part in a scavenger hunt to identify different leaves and the trees which they came from. We also had lots of fun working in our pairs to guide one another through the woodland whilst one of us was blindfolded – this was quite scary but really fun too 🙂

P3 would like to wish everyone a lovely weekend and look forward to another fun-filled week next week 🙂
