P3B Week commencing 9th December
In writing we have been making recipes for “Good Friends”. We all worked together to brainstorm our ideas of what “ingredients” would make a good friend. We came up with loads of interesting ideas including a dollop of kindness, a sprinkle of happiness, a teaspoon of resilience and a cup of helpfulness to name but a few. We then used these ideas to write a recipe to bake a good friend! The recipes produced were all very good and we are going to use these to remember what makes a good friend.
In Art we have been busy designing and drawing pictures of snowmen to decorate the hall for the Carols around the Christmas tree. We chose the snowman theme as it ties in with the song we will be singing about Frosty the Snowman. We have been learning the words to the song ready for our big performance next week.
In Maths we are continuing to work on our column addition, with the focus this week being on carrying forward a number. We are all getting much better at remembering to add on the carrying number and to keep our work neatly laid out in the correct place value columns.

Primary 6 – The Last Day of Term 2!!!
Primary 6 have had a busy last week of Term, revisiting concepts looked at earlier in the session and consolidating some knowledge.
We’ve also had lots of fun, with a party, where Mr Wells showed his DJ skills and we played games, danced and enjoyed a snack.
We were challenged to unlock Santa’s Naughty or Nice List, to discover whose present the label had fallen off, played one of our favourites – The Pirate Game and created an image of Santa, using co-ordinates.
We would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2020.
Kind regards
Primary 6 and Mrs Kerr
P4B Having Christmassy Fun
Well we have reached the end of the term and the end of 2019. The children have worked so hard and I’m very proud of their achievements,as are they. This week has mainly been about Christmas. We had a fun Christmas Party and enjoyed DJ Wells entertaining us at the Disco. We have made calendars which you may have already seen and hopefully the children have remembered what trees are in the foreground. In RME we made origami paper stars with Mrs.Begarnie and in Music we had fun singing Christmas songs and passing Santa around the ring. We created a funny Elf Fact file and have done other Christmassy worksheets. So all that remains is to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and our very Best Wishes for 2020. May it be Happy and Healthy.

Christmas is arriving in P4B
We are getting very excited in P4B and now only have a week to go. In Maths this week we did an assessment on Subtraction to finish off our block on this and we’ve gone onto multiplication. We all seem to love learning our tables and have enjoyed playing games to revise them and learn new ones. We now have a tables booklet which we’re enjoying working on but want to fill the whole book!! I’ve reminded them it’s to be done gradually.
In writing we have written another explanation text and had the choice of explaining the life cycle of a frog or a moth. We all did very well and also added a diagram to reinforce our explanation.
We used oil pastels for our Christmas cards and are looking forward to bringing them home in this next week.
Our PowerPoint presentations on volcanoes have begun and have been brilliant so far. Looking forward to the rest next week.
We really enjoyed watching P1 and 2 performing their Nativity songs on Friday and are only sorry we missed the dress rehearsal in the church due to the weather. They were brilliant with fantastic dance moves. Well done P1 and P2.
So we are looking forward to our last week. Our Christmas Party is on Tuesday so if the children bring their party outfits in a bag to change into for the afternoon.
Love from P4B and Mrs.Burton
Good Friends in P3A
We are still working away in P3A, trying to keep as much normality as possible in these last two weeks before Christmas. We have been continuing our learning of column addition, focusing on carrying this week. To begin with we all sat together and worked through some addition problems, helping each other if we got a little stuck. We have really enjoyed the challenge of these sums and by the end of the week we all got it.
‘Kindness’ was the theme for both our health and our writing lessons. We watched the animation – Giraffes Can’t Dance and then went into groups to discuss how the animals reacted to Gerald, how Gerald felt, what advice we would give to the animals and possible solutions to make Gerald feel better about himself. We then worked individually to draw a picture of ourselves and Gerald dancing, we then wrote some sentences of encouragement for Gerald. The encouragement P3A gave him was fantastic! For writing we wrote a ‘Recipe for a Good Friend’. On Tuesday we wrote grafitti walls of words about what qualities we look for in a friend. We used these words to make our own word banks. On Wednesday, we wrote our recipes, choosing the qualities we like most as our ingredients – almost as though we were baking a gingerbread friend. For the method we used ‘bossy verbs’ to give instructions. I’ve put a couple below so you can see what they’re like. They’re such lovely recipes and the children know what positive traits our friends should have.
We worked in groups to paint large pictures to decorate the school hall for the Carols Around the Tree event next week. Each group could decide to paint any Christmas image they wanted – but they all had to agree on what it was, there was some compromising to be done but we got there and the pictures are looking really good.
On Wednesday, Mrs Kennedy’s neice came to visit. She lives in Saudi Arabia and she showed us a little film she made about her life there. We asked her lots of questions about living in a different country. She also taught us some Arabic. P3A were very welcoming, polite and kind and although she was pretty nervous she had a lovely afternoon and thought our school was great 🙂
I can’t believe it’s just a week until the holidays! We’re looking forward to our last week in school, the children’s excitement, although loud 😉 is lovely and we get carried along with it.
Have a good weekend, P3A and Mrs Kennedy
Mostly Christmas Fayre in P4B
We have been busy preparing for the Christmas Fayre this week and have all been very involved. Our Christmas wreaths were a great success and we were very proud of them. We decided as a class on the prices of the items we had made and took it in turns to man our stall. We had very few items left but some enterprising members of the class walked round selling 2 for the price of one!! Well done P4B.
On Thursday we had our Christmas lunch which was enjoyed by all who participated. We are also enjoying our Christmas Advent calendar as well as working with P4A, delivering the Christmas Post.
Our writing this week was on a different genre- Explanation. We wrote an explanation of what happens when a volcano erupts. We have been learning about volcanoes in relation to our book study of “The Firework Maker’s Daughter” and our explanations were very clear and informative. We also drew diagrams of volcanoes and labelled them. We have now finished the book and had a discussion about our likes and dislikes. I think most of us enjoyed it. We read a passage from the book which Mrs.Burton had changed and put silly words in. We identified most of the silly words and found it quite amusing. This was part of our Reading Reflection work.
In Maths we have continued with subtraction but next week we will start looking at times tables and who knows what.
Have a good weekend everyone and thank you for coming to our Christmas Fayre.

The Apprentice has nothing on P3A!
We have had a fun week in P3A, learning business and enterprise skills. We looked at product, pricing, marketing and selling as we prepared for the Christmas Fair. We all worked very hard to make the items to sell on our stall: Making reindeer food, Christmas tree decorations using wooden discs, reindeer and snowmen lollipop holders. We also bought some wristbands as they were quite cheap and we thought we could sell them for a good price and make some profit from them.
The other products were chosen as we were looking for some environmentally friendly goods to sell, with as little plastic as possible – our reindeer food does not have any glitter as it is plastic and not good for the environment – ours is entirely edible and birds might enjoy it as well as reindeer 🙂 They are in paper bags too and these can be recycled after use. The wooden discs are also all natural products.
As we were making the products we had to think about quality control and make sure they were as neat as possible and of good quality – no one would like to buy something that is falling apart or poorly made! We were a great production team, the classroom was like a factory with everyone working hard on their job.
In our writing lesson, we learned about persuasive language.. We worked in teams to think of words and phrases that we could use to make signs that will make people want to buy each of our products. They also had to show information about the product and clearly show the price too. We also thought about reasonable prices to sell our goods at – taking into account the money spent to buy the resources. Learning what a profit is.
On Thursday we had our school Christmas lunch. The lunch hall looked great and there was Christmas music playing too. The food was lovely and we all had a good time.
As the hall was busy with Christmas lunches we had PE in the classroom again this week. We did some Scottish country dancing, by popular demand (from some!) The children have been learning Scottish dances with Mrs Reid and we had great fun and good exercise practicing them in class.
In numeracy, we continued with column addition sums and learned about making a profit or a loss when selling goods.
On Friday, we were very busy at the Christmas Fair – we worked hard on our stall, adding prices and working out change. Some of us even went around the Fair with baskets of products and did really well. We showed lots of confidence and had excellent sales chat! We sold out of everything on our stall and we are looking forward to finding out from the PTA what our takings were.
Thank you to everyone who came along to the Fair today, it is always great fun and the children get so much out of having their own stall.
Have a lovely weekend, P3A and Mrs Kennedy
Week ending 29th November
Maths
For maths we did real life maths where made nets of cuboids. We are making gift boxes for cakes for the Christmas fair. We had to do a lot of measuring to come up with the best size. we decided not to make lids as we want people to see the cakes. We did doubling and halfing in numeracy.
Art
We made baubles that had famous landmarks in France. These are going to be hung on the Christmas tree in St Michael’s Church.
IDL
We had a debate on climate change and made posters. Primary6 continued to find out about the Scoittish Parliament. Mr Corr is coming to talk to us on Monday about his work there.
PE
We did Scottish dancing and we played games on Thursday and Wednesday. The P5 had their last session of golf and rugby.
Primary 6 had their Rotakids meeting where Dr Mackenzie told us how well we did with our assembly on Purple for Polio. He would like us to deliver it at a Rotary meeting.
At music we continued with learning how to play the recorder.
In science , we were report writng our investigation into what happens when you add bulbs to a series circuit. We are always very good with the practical activities but the writing is a bit harder……the bulbs get dimmer!
However we are going to try it with parallel circuits in a couple of weeks. Find out how we are going to make electricity from fruit!

Benchball Champs in P3A
We had a great time at the P3 cluster benchball tournament on Tuesday, walking all the way to Linlithgow Academy, playing benchball and then walking all the way back was no mean feat – but we smashed it! All the children played well – our practise really paid off, there was lots of great passing, blocking and tactical moves. Our behaviour was excellent too and we were a credit to Springfield School. We took our certificate to Mr Wells when we got back and he was very proud of us – it is now on the achievement wall. Thank you to our two fantastic parent helpers for keeping us going on our walk and making sure we got to the correct court at the right times.
We began our Christmas preparations this week. Each year there is a lovely event in St Michael’s Church called The Festival of Trees, it is on from the 6th to the 8th December. Local school, clubs and organisations are invited to decorate a tree. This year the theme is Christmas Around the World. Our Language Ambassadors have been busy planning our tree and they asked P3 to make salt dough christmas tree decorations painted like the French flag. They came to help us make the dough. Please click the link below for further details.
In numeracy this week we began with some problem solving – applying our numeracy skills to work out the answers to word problems. These boys worked particularly hard and were a great team – every answer was correct too – well done!
We also began to learn ‘chimney sums’ or column addition this week. Working on laying out the sums, making sure we use the squares in our jotters to get the numbers in the correct columns as this is very important to allow us to add the right numbers together. Everyone made a great start and most really enjoyed this way of adding.
In outer maths we looked at Venn diagrams, we were sweet shop owners and had to sort our sweets according to the colour and pattern on the wrapper.
In literacy, we have had literacy circles – reading and discussing our reading books with a focus on setting this week. We also worked on a comprehension task for a non-fiction piece of writing about looking after your bike.
In French we are continuing to consolidate our learning of French foods, playing Hangman and pairs using the French words that we learned last week.
We did yoga in the class for PE, using our Yogido posture cards to create stations which we moved around trying lots of different positions – our muscles had to work really hard to help us to keep our balance. We had a little meditation and breathing session at the end.
Next week we will be busy getting ready for the Christmas Fair – we’re looking forward to seeing everyone and we hope you visit our stall!
Have a lovely weekend, enjoy the switching on of the lights anyone who is going along.
