P7a Weekly news

Literacy

This week we were fortunate to visit the Book Fair at the rugby club where author Lari Don spoke to the cluster P7’s about her Spellchaser’s trilogy. There was lots of audience participation as we helped create our own chase within a story.

We also wrote a recount of P7 camp where we had to share what we enjoyed, what we didn’t, our personal challenge and our next steps. It was lovely to talk together before we started writing and share the challenges we had which were all very varied.

We finished creating our wall display in art for “The boy in the striped pyjamas” where our focus was on using different materials and teamwork to create the final version which you can see below. We then started watching the film with an aim of writing a comparison of book and film afterwards.

Health and Wellbeing

Michelle from WLDAS (West Lothian Drug and Alcohol Service) visited us again this week to deliver sessions 2 and 3 of the tobacco education programme. The focus was very much on giving the children tools and words to use when faced with a tricky situation. The children were very engaged and participated fully in the session which taught them all strategies which could be used in any risk-taking situation. We also had the dummy demonstrate the damaging effects of smoking just one cigarette.

Numeracy

Our focus this week was on shape. We did a whirlwind tour of properties of 2D and 3D shapes using mathematical language and nets of shapes. We then looked at the different types of triangles and angles using estimation, measurement and problem solving.

P7 Cluster Rugby Tournament

We took part in the P7 cluster rugby tournament on Friday. Luckily the rain stayed away for most of the morning and each team enjoyed 4 or 5 games of tag rugby. Well done to everyone for giving it a go.

Numeracy and Mathematics

This week we have been finding the area of both composite shapes (squares and rectangles) and right-angled triangles. The formula we have been using is A = l x b, which means area equals length multiplied by the breadth of the shape. When finding the area of a right-angled triangle we had to calculate the total area then half our answer. A nice definition of area and volume that was given by one of the pupils was that it’s “just the space inside something”.

Literacy and English

In writing we have been creating reflective texts. We used ICT to word process a summary of our week at Dukeshouse Wood. Our success criteria was to describe events in detail, structure our work appropriately and incorporate our feelings and emotions. We managed to do so successfully and Mr. Logan was impressed with the quality of our work. The English department won’t know what’s hit them next year! Miss Baillie was in class with us on Tuesday morning and following on from our Drug and Tobacco Education she asked us to create anti-smoking posters based on what we had just learnt about with Nicola. These were both eye-catching and persuasive, and would make anyone think twice before smoking and encourage people to have a smoke-free home.

Health and Wellbeing

As previously mentioned, we had Nicola in from WLDAS (West Lothian Drug and Alcohol Service) twice this week to deliver the final two Drug and Tobacco Education workshops. The children were engaged during both of these visits and successfully demonstrated their ability to share information from previous sessions. Nicola told P7b their recall was the best she had come across. On Friday, we participated in this year’s Rugby Festival at Linlithgow Rugby Club. This involved taking part in small-sided games and applying the skills we learnt during our taster sessions in April and May. Big thank you to Kevin and the rest of the organisers. We all had a great time!

P7a weekly news

P7 had a very busy week and are looking forward to a rest before we head to camp on Monday.

On Monday we had the first of 3 sessions on drug education with a focus on smoking. The children have all brought home a smoke free home pledge and were asked to try to give something up for a week to see how it may feel to have to give up something .

In Numeracy we focused on volume and capapcity this week. Our main aims were conversions from ml and litres, estimating, measuring and calculating volume of a solid using the formula volume=length x breadth x height. The children enjoyed making mocktails where they had to use exact measurements.

In Social studies we looked at what a city needs and then did research and presentations on whether Glasgow and Edinburgh meet the needs of their citizens, and how they do this.

In literacy we finished reading “The boy in the striped pyjamas” which was very emotional, Mrs Gordon did cry at the end as she thought she might. We will watch the film when we return from camp, and do a comparison of the 2.

In French this week we visited our nursery to teach a little bit of french to some of the children. I think they enjoyed our visit !

Have a lovely weekend and see you when we are back from camp.

P7a Digital Learning Week

To celebrate digital learning week P7a were very busy with ICT.

Mrs Gordon create a survey in “forms” within glow and uploaded it to yammer where most of the children answered it. The survey was about the use of Number Talks in class. For her Practitioner Enquiry Mrs Gordon is investigating whether the use of Number Talks 3 times a week can increase confidence an ability in mental maths.

Mrs Gordon was immediately able to view and download the results of her survey and was delighted to see that  90% of the class think that the use of Number Talks has increased both their confidence and ability in mental maths.

The children posted comments such as “I always used to write my answer down, but now because of all the strategies that I have learnt it makes it easier for me to count in my head”, “because my classmates have showed me different strategies” and “I am able to multiply with numbers above 12”.
Mrs Gordon arranged for a skype call with P7b in Linlithgow Primary School this week. We had a few technical issues, and once we got over the excitement of seeing each other we asked some questions about transition, to let us get to know each other better.

P7a weekly news

Numeracy

This week we have been focusing on weight within maths. We used lots of different skills such as estimation, calculating, converting from mg, g,kg and tonnes and solving weight word problems. We also imagined we were selling items on ebay and had to find out the cost of our post and packaging, giving us a skill for life, learning and work !

Health and Wellbeing

This week we had a workshop on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking. It was delivered by Lyndsay from the Just Enough charity. The children learnt a great deal about both issues and were shocked by some of the statistics that were shared. Lyndsay delivered the workshop in a fun way using drama, but the message was indeed a very serious one. The children can now more confidently identify the signs that somebody may be being trafficked or held as a slave. Thank you to Lyndsay and the Just Enough team for this excellent learning opportunity.

Rugby

We had our last rugby session this week. As you can see from the photos the children were all fully involved and enjoyed playing games against each other.

Class Talks

A huge thanks to all parents and carers who supported the children in creating, presenting and providing props for their class talks. I was blown away by the quality of the talks. Every single child should be proud of themselves. We all learnt a lot this week from a variety of unique class talk topics from WW2 Then and Now to War in Nazi Germany.

Numeracy and Mathematics

How much does a polar bear weigh? Enough to break the ice. Hello and welcome to this week’s P7b Blog. As you may have guessed, our focus this week has been weight. We have been using different scales to measure various objects and successfully converted between grams and kilograms, applying our previous knowledge that there are 1000g for every 1kg. Alongside this, we have been tackling weight word problems where we have to unpick exactly what each question is asking us to do. We also discussed the difference between imperial and metric systems of measure, and real-life examples of these being used. Following on from our focus on weight we have started our work on volume and capacity. We are now able to convert between litres, centilitres and millilitres, and use a formula (v = l x b x h) to find the volume of different containers and 3D shapes.

Literacy and English

All week we have been presenting our class talks to our peers. We have delivered a summarised version of our personal projects which focused on a specific aspect of World War II. Mr. Logan has been blown away by the standard of presentations and the hard work which has gone into the preparation and delivery of them. We have demonstrated that we are confident individuals who can present with the appropriate use of voice, tone, clarity and pace. Each and every class talk was detailed and interesting, with ICT used to support our work and audience interaction throughout. We understand that delivering presentations is an important skill for learning, life and work and we will be given a number of opportunities to do so after making our transition to Linlithgow Academy.

Arwen’s Sporting Success!

Well done to Arwen Kennedy in P7B for taking part in an ‘Aquathlon’ in Aberfeldy, yesterday. Arwen had to swim 10 lengths of a swimming pool and then run 2K. Here she is with her trophy and medal.  What a great effort Arwen!

Primary Engineer Awards!

A massive congratulations to Ross Findlater in P7B and Lucy Roy in P7A for their recent success in the Primary Engineer Awards. All of our children did very well in the challenge which was to create an invention, with many gaining a ‘distinction’ pass.  Ross and Lucy’s inventions however, have been chosen to go through to he next stage in the competition. Ross invented a special type of car alarm and Lucy a device to suppprt people with memory problems.  We are delighted for you both! Thank you to Mrs Tulloch for her support with this.

Outdoor Science and more…

We have been outdoors lots this week and the weather was very kind to us. As part of our outdoor science over the past few weeks we have been looking at habitat and characteristics of a species.

In groups we created a new species, with specific habitat and characteristics. We then made maps of the playground, models of our species and a fact file. We then hid the creatures and had to go on an expedition to find another teams species using only the map and fact file.

It was a very interesting task, as we found that our results were dependent on the quality of the maps and the information provided !

Meet our 5 new species below !

In numeracy our focus has been on data handling. We have investigated mean, median and mode of data sets and have a lovely song about that ! We then moved on to look at all types of chart including pie, bar, line and histogram. We used data to make frequency charts and histograms. We also started to look at the manipulation of data using excel and spreadsheets. using the sort and filter functionality the children learnt how to deal with large amounts of data and find answers to questions. Our next steps will be to create some graphs using that data.

In literacy most of us have finished our creative writing, our goal was to up-level our writing and challenge ourselves with our vocabulary and openers.

French this week was all about pets, “Tu-as un animal a la maison?”. The children learnt how to ask and answer the questions and we also focused on writing these phrases and vocabulary.

Mrs Gordon handed back the WW2 personal projects with feedback (written and verbal), she was blown away by the quality of these projects, and learnt a lot. She cannot wait to hear the class talks about these exciting topics next week…

Bon weekend

Outdoor Learning in P7

Within outdoor learning this week Mrs Law told us about the art work of Andrew Goldsworthy. We then worked in groups across P7 a and P7b to show our interpretation of his work using natural materials only. Here are some examples.
