Another Week at SPS and Bonnytoun…

We managed to all get back to school safely last Monday after our three ‘snow days.’

Our Lion King production has now been postponed until the end of April when the weather will hopefully be a lot more settled. Children in P6-7 are going to have a short break from rehearsing and focus on other curricular areas for a short period.

We have had two assemblies this week due to missing one last week when we were off. Mrs Matos and I held a Fairtrade assembly last Thursday where we looked at the importance of paying farmer’s in  less economically developed countries, a fair price for their produce. On Friday we dressed down in something ‘wacky’ to raise money for the Fairtrade Foundation. Well done to Joseph, Alisa, Ben W and Issac who worked extremely hard to make a Fairtrade board game as part of a challenge that I set them. Morven, Lauren C and Olivia M were the proud winners of our Fairtrade competition which was to design a Fairtrade football. Well done to you all!

P4 and Miss Durano led a professionally delivered assembly last Friday on the Vikings and the day before two ‘real’ Vikings visited Springfield for the day bringing their longboat along with them. This was a great experience for our children.

The nursery have had a particularly exciting week as we have welcomed our new pets to Bonnytoun! Our pet committee are going to be busy looking after two more fish (we have four now!) and Jack and Victor, our new baby Guinea Pigs! Mrs T and I are in love and are going to be very busy over the next few weekends nursing the little piggies at home so that they are calm and ready for the boys and girls to stroke them. They are real cuties so please pop by to have a look if you are passing. We are passionate about animal welfare in the nursery and will ensure that they are extremely well looked after. They are already enjoying a wonderful diet of kale, parsley, broccoli, brussel sprouts and the occasional apple! There are researched benefits to having animals around children and we hope that our pets will enhance your child’s early years experience. Please let me know your thoughts and feedback on this.

Here are some photographs of our certificate winners and ‘birthday’ children from this week:

Well done also to the Demick girls for their dancing achievements and also to M in P1 for his achievement.

Have a very happy Mother’s Day everyone and we will see you all next week for parents’ night.

Kind wishes,

Miss Baillie 💖 🐹 xxx

Numeracy and Mathematics

Capacity – ‘the maximum amount something can contain’
Volume  – ‘the space that an object or substance occupies’

We’ve been reminding ourselves of the difference between these terms this week and building on our learning from last week. On Monday and Tuesday we rotated round a carousel of activities; estimating volume, measuring volume, converting between different units of measurement and ordering volumes by size. Robbie proved to be the most accurate estimator of volume as he found 500ml and 750ml of water exactly. On Wednesday we all became baristas as we made some mocktails. We had to carefully follow each recipe to ensure we included exactly the right amount of each coloured juice. Having made the mocktails from the menu, we concocted our own and named it! We found there to be a number of factors that could influence the accuracy of our measurements, and we improved as we progressed through the recipes.

Next week we will be consolidating our learning of written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Health and Wellbeing

Our brains were put to the test again this week in football. We worked with a partner to carry out some mirrored dribbling exercises. One person had a football whilst their partner was the leader. As the leader moved, the other person had to mimic this, e.g. they move forwards = move back, to their right = move left. We then switched the roles and the person dribbling became the leader. Mr. Logan noticed we were getting the hang of this, so our footballs were exchanged for tennis balls with a focus on using the sole of the foot to manipulate a smaller object. We finished with some 2v2 attacking and defending situations and will progress to 2v1 attacking scenarios next week. Have a look at SF and RWi below as they demonstrate mirrored dribbling with a tennis ball.

In Health and Wellbeing, we also finished with our series of lessons focusing on internet safety. This week’s lesson was called ‘Codebreaker’ and we were tasked with trying to create strong passwords. Firstly, we were given two random children and some basic details about them. From the clues provided we had to make reasoned guesses as to what their passwords would be. The fact that we were able to do so highlighted the importance of using random combinations of upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers and symbols to create passwords which are difficult to predict. We have a greater understanding of how to protect our online accounts and data, and it was interesting how many people said they would be changing some passwords when they got home.

Fairtrade

Mr. Logan was delighted to see that everyone had made the effort to dress down in something wacky in support of Fairtrade on Friday. The costumes and outfits were brilliant, and made it very tricky to choose 5 winners. MF was given 5th place for her banana costume effort and AS was 4th in her Hawaiian gear. HR scooped 3rd place for his random assortment of dressing gown, school tie, sunglasses and cap whilst AE-C was second with too many hair baubles to count! Our class winner was RD who took bright colours and wackiness to a whole new level. Well done everyone! Great effort for a great cause!

World War II

We began our studies of World War II this week to much excitement from the class. Hearing the radio broadcast from Neville Chamberlain declaring war on Germany really made us think about the emotions people would have felt at this time in 1939. Having listened to this, we carried out some research on the Allies and Axis, countries within these factions and who their leaders were. It was noted that in 1940, Great Britain changed Prime Minister to Winston Churchill whilst Russia, or the Soviet Union, changed allegiances after a surprise invasion. We finished the week by sketching World War II leaders with Mrs. Doran. This was tricky as we were only given half of the leaders picture and had to sketch what we thought the other half would look like. You’ll see these displayed in class soon, so come and have a look!

Happy Weekend!

P7a Weekly News

Numeracy

This week we continued our work with volume and capacity. We used the formula V = l x b x h to calculate the volume of objects. We also solved word problems about volume and capacity, and had lots of fun making colourful mocktails where we had to accurately measure coloured water and follow a recipe. In problem solving we jumped back to fractions, decimals and percentages and had to solve word problems using what we remembered.

Literacy

In writing this week we started our STEM Engineer Leaders letters. This is a competition that Mrs Tulloch will enter us for where we have to explain what skills we possess and our idea for an invention. Based on our idea and how well we sell ourselves our entries may make it to the final. The winning entries in Scotland are made by students at Strathclyde University. This week we focused on planning the letter and deciding the contents of each paragraph, next week we will write the letters.

WWII

Everyone was very excited to start our new IDL topic WWII. We started by listening to Neville Chamberlain declare war on Germany and led on to discuss the Allies and Axis powers and their leaders. The children did a little research on the leaders and then they chose a leader to create a portrait of. The leader photo was cut in half and the children had to recreate the other half thinking about proportion, shade, scale, symmetry etc

Lion King

We were all disappointed that our show was postponed due to the weather, but all agree it will be amazing when the time comes. We stopped all Lion King work on Monday and will pick it back up week beginning 16th April. A huge thank you to all our wonderful parent and grandparent helpers, we could not have done it without you all, the show will be amazing on the 24th and 25th April.

Happy weekend

Lion King

Unfortunately (I’m sure the children disagree…) we had a very short week due to the snow…On Monday we had a successful rehearsal at Linlithgow Academy which at least gave the children a chance to get their positions on stage for most of the show. We had hoped to be back yesterday to do a full run through, but that was not meant to be…Hopefully we get back in on Monday. If the children can keep practicing using the links that Mr Logan posted on the blog, and that I sent on dojo, that would help greatly. They can also listen to the Lion King Junior soundtrack. Well done P7, you are doing an amazing job!

PE

In PE Mr Logan has been continuing with his better movers and thinkers football skills. The staff had a training session on this a few weeks ago, and this allows children to use ball skills whilst also having to multi-task and use their brain eg dribbling a football in different directions (4 forward, 4 side, 4 back) whilst throwing and catching a tennis ball with one hand. Not as easy as it sounds…

Numeracy

This week we started a new topic of Volume and Capacity. We revised the meanings of the 2 terms and then went on to estimate the capacity of various objects. We then started work on a carousel of 4 activities where we had to : estimate and measure the capacity of 5 different containers with water in them, estimate 100ml, 75ml and 25ml by pouring into a container and checking, convert from millilitres to litres and do some volume word problems.

Numeracy and Mathematics

This week in Numeracy and Mathematics, we have been continuing with our work finding area and perimeter. Our work this week involved us applying our skills in real life contexts using floor plans for different properties. We successfully measured the perimeter of individual rooms, found the length of missing sizes and dimensions using the information provided, calculated the area for flooring needed with costs and examined proposed extensions to existing buildings. Next week we will further extend our learning and the use of appropriate formulae in order to calculate the volume and capacity of varied 3D objects.

Literacy and English

Having previously taken notes with Mrs. Doran, we used these to begin creating a different text in the form of a written report. This was based on the Winter Olympics which have been taking place over the past couple of weeks. These will be completed next week before carrying out a self-assessment of our work against our writing targets and success criteria. In grammar, we enjoyed learning more about prefixes and suffixes. These are used to extend root words and alter their meaning. A prefix is a letter(s) placed before a root word, for example, play > replay. A suffix is a group of letters placed at the end of a root word, for example, playing. Have a look at examples we came up with below.

Health and Wellbeing

In football for P.E this week, both our feet and brains were put to the test. After getting some great ideas from the teachers’ Better Movers and Thinkers session last Friday, Mr. Logan used these to get us moving and thinking in a more cohesive manner. Now that we have developed the ability to dribble confidently with good close control, we were given the additional challenge of rotating a tennis ball around our waist in a clockwise and anti-clockwise direction. Whilst doing so, we had to take 5 touches forward, sideways, backwards then repeat. We also tried dribbling whilst tossing the tennis ball in the air in one hand and swapping both balls with a partner. Finally, when the whistle was blown we stopped our football, threw our tennis ball up and had to complete different clapping sequences before catching it. We needed a good rest afterwards! Here are our schools footballers in action on Monday.

The Lion King

Mr. Logan’s programme team polished off their final draft this week and it is looking superb! Well done to the pupils involved for creating such an impressive piece of work, it looks very professional. With just 2 weeks to go, our rehearsals continued this week. Mr. Logan was blown away by our rehearsal on Friday, everyone has done so well to remember their lines and deliver these in such a confident manner. It’s lovely to see every child beginning to enter their character and contribute to what is going to be a fabulous peformance in their own individual way. Keep up the hard work and stay calm P6 and P7, you’re going to be fantastic! Here are some of the talented pupils we have playing main parts in P7b!

Have a great weekend!

P7a weekly learning

Numeracy

We continued our focus on Area and Perimeter by solving word problems relating to these measurements. The children picked whether they wanted to work on the “mild”, “spicy” or “hot” challenges and had to solve real life problems relating to wallpaper and carpet measurements. We also created a café where we had to solve fraction, decimal and percentage questions to know how many items were in each category of the menu eg. 1/20 of the menu is hot drinks.

Literacy

This week we were extending our knowledge of prefixes and suffixes. We had to create word maps using root words eg port and see how many words we could create from the root word. I think the record was 22! We also started using our new reading comprehension resource where the children select a card to work on based on their interests and level. The children really enjoyed this as they said they likes the choice, variety and the number of levels available to choose from. Once they select a card they answer questions on 3 sections: reading comprehension, all about words and grammar.

Drama

With our Lion King Show only just over a week away, Mrs Gordon arranged for Mr Mac, the drama teacher at Linlithgow Academy to run some workshops. Each class in P6 and 7 got the chance to have a 30 minute session with Mr Mac where he helped the children use characterisation to move and act like their animal from the Lion King.

French

This week we continued our learning about food linking it to our previous learning on likes and dislikes. We did a carousel of activities where we asked a partner if they liked certain foods, then we play connect 4 with food and a snap food game.

School Football League

We’re incredibly proud of all of our school footballers today after another successful league meeting at Xcite Linlithgow! All of the children’s hard work at training is paying dividends as they racked up some impressive results and played some exciting football in the process.

Borussia Springfield managed to remain undefeated in their 7 games, winning 6 and drawing 1 game without conceding a single goal. Well done all of you, fantastic individual and team performances!

Dynamo Springfield included some children making their first competitive appearances today and all of them played extremely well. Four wins, two draws and an unlucky, last minute defeat against their Springfield compatriots made for a hugely successful 90 minutes of play. Super effort from all of you!

Numeracy

Another busy week in P7a started with more work on information and data handling. To complement the work we have been doing on creating and interpreting graphs we learnt how to draw our own pie charts. We had to use our knowledge of angles and fractions and percentages to help accurately draw the segments. We then moved on to a session on creating and using spreadsheets to make graphs. The children loved using excel to do this, and were very excited to learn how to write formulae, copy formulae and then create and edit graphs. Lots more skills for learning, life and work…

Literacy

Our focus this week was on the apostrophe. We had some great discussion on when to use “its” and “it’s” and when to use apostrophes in sentences. This is an area that we often see mistakes in, so Mrs Gordon is looking forward to seeing this learning translated into our everyday work. We also took some time to evaluate our work this term by highlighting areas where we were achieving and not achieving our literacy targets in our jotters.

French and Spanish

In French this week we started to look into food and drink so that we can link that with “J’aime” and “Je n’aime pas” from last week, and eventually move onto café role plays. Mrs Gordon gave us a sheet with the words for 12 french foods and we had to work out what they were. We found that when we used our knowledge of French, English and Spanish we could work out these words and make connections in our learning. In Spanish we learnt “los colores” it was great to see that “verde” is very close to “vert” in French, so we knew that was green…

Technologies

This week was Internet Safety week and on Tuesday we worked with P7b to discuss what to do if we see anything on the internet that upsets us. We had some great discussions around peer pressure, body image, “friending” people you don’t know and inappropriate use of the internet. We all agreed that if we wouldn’t wear it on a t-shirt, then we shouldn’t post it online…

Bon weekend

Numeracy and Mathematics

We have been continuing our work on data handling this week. In doing so, we have both asked and answered questions to extract key information from varied data and displayed this by drawing pie charts and creating them using Microsoft Word. Next, we will be looking at measure through learning about area and volume. Making estimations, calculating the perimeter, calculating area using cm/m² and volume using cm/m³, using scales accurately, converting measurements and demonstrating an understanding of imperial units and how they are still used in everyday life. We have set some maths word problem challenges for the upper school and shall wait to see if anyone manages to solve them for a reward!

Literacy and English

Sam was chosen as this week’s Star Writer in P7b after he produced a superb creative piece of writing about the African savanna. Everyone worked incredibly hard on their pieces of writing and we will be peer assessing these next week using our Second Level writing criteria. This will allow us to form our own next steps and targets in writing over the coming weeks. You can now see this on our Star Writer wall, it’s well worth a read. We have been brushing up on our uses of apostrophes for both contraction and possession, and trying to implement this in our own writing. On Yammer, we thought of higher order questions which we would like to pose to members of staff from the Academy and will hopefully have these answered when they visit us ahead of transition.

Health and Wellbeing

In P.E this week, we designed our own football games that incorporated the skills we have developed so far; passing, dribbling and shooting. The children came up with some fantastic ideas and provided a clear explanation and demonstration as to how their game was played. Our focus on internet safety was geared towards online content this week. We had to assess some of the content which you may encounter online, decide on it’s appropriateness and then discuss the effect this could have on people. As a result, we are now aware of how to best respond when we come across something online which upsets us or makes us feel uncomfortable. On Thursday, we had a tour of Linlithgow Academy as part of our transition to S1. It was great to have a look around, meet some of the staff and have some burning questions answered. We look forward to our 3 transition days in June now. Finally, Lion King rehearsals have carried on this week where we have been designing and creating scenery, making costumes and having our first full run through in the hall. The main cast managed this off-script, our lionesses were fierce and our ensemble were singing beautifully throughout. Well done to all involved, and thank you to Mrs. Gordon, Mrs. Matos and Miss Prince for their continued efforts in getting us prepared!

Have a relaxing and restful long weekend everyone, it’s well deserved.
