A farewell to P1B

What a fabulous final week I have had with my class. We have been writing with our new digraphs, had a wonderful trip to the park and finished off with a pyjama party. I am going to miss them all so much but I am excited to read the blog and follow their progress for the rest of their time in Primary 1.

I also want to  say a HUGE thank you to all of the wonderful P1B parents who have been so supportive and kind to me this year. The babies have been showered with beautiful gifts and I am completely overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity shown towards me and my family this week. Thank you all so much! I feel extremely lucky to work in such a fantastic school and to have had the opportunity to work with such an enthusiastic class. I am incredibly proud of each and every child in P1B. The progress they have made so far is phenomenal and I know they will continue to thrive with Mrs Reid.

I hope to see you all soon for a visit!

Love Mrs McAulay x

P1 play at the park

We had the best time EVER today with our trip to the park. All of the children enjoyed their treat for collecting so many house points.  Here are some pictures to show you what we got up to……

This Week’s News in School and Nursery

Today we held an assembly to mark UNICEF’s ‘Safe Internet Day.’ This term all classes across school undertake a block of work on Internet safety. Today was an introduction to the work that will follow. All children learned about how they should stay safe online and to approach an adult with any worries.

We take our responsibility in the area of Internet Safety extremely seriously as we work to safeguard all children in school. Please ask your children to share some of the information that they learned today.

Thank you to all parents who completed our recent Health and Wellbeing survey. We hope that you have managed to read our responses and how we have put in place actions for any points raised, in the ‘you say, we did’ document, which was emailed out to you all this week.

As always, please get in touch with any concerns or with feedback as to how we can do things better. We are trying very hard and we do want to get things right for each and every child.

There have been numerous achievements this week including the following:

-L in P2 brought along his Victorian coin collection to show me! What an amazing collection he has!

-Our Fizzy Fingers group, led by Mrs Scott have been busy making Scottie dog mobiles!

-A in P6 wrote an amazing letter to Scotrail to say how he thinks the train services could be improved. He got a very lengthy reply! Great writing A!

Have a lovely weekend!

Subtraction Action in P1a

We have been very busy working on subtraction in P1a. We really enjoyed using our number tiles to make a number line in the corridor and get our friends to jump out number sentences. We also had to do a subtraction colouring Elmer where each number had a colour, we had to work out that 10-2=8 and then that 8 was black. You can see some more of our fun activities below such as ask a partner subtraction questions and farm animal subtraction.

In literacy we learnt 2 new digraphs this week, th and wh. We have found it pretty tricky to say f and th differently so have been practising making sure our tongue sticks out when we do th….Our new tricky words were ‘be’ and ‘she’.

In French we learnt more about “la famille” using our friend Camembear. We learnt ma mère, mon père, ma sœur et mon frère.  We love learning French and Mrs Gordon hopes lots of us can come along to the family fun language event on Thursday 21st February in Linlithgow Primary School.

In ICT this week we worked with our P3 friends to log on to the netbooks and into our own Education City accounts. This allowed us to play numeracy and phonics games. We had great fun!

Happy weekend Mrs Gordon and P1a

Chop Chop Choppity Chop in P1

Another busy week in P1.

In literacy our new digraph was “ch” Mrs Gordon was really impressed with how well we could switch between “sh” and “ch” and tell which was needed where. We had great fun singing “Chop, Chop, choppity chop” whilst we peeled and chopped vegetables and made vegetable soup. We all loved chopping…we also loved eating our soup the next day! Mrs Gordon had to scrape the pan as everyone wanted seconds…It was lovely to have warm soup on such a chilly day. Have a look at us making and eating the soup.

In numeracy we continued our subtraction journey. We really enjoyed jumping along a number line that we made in the corridor to show how to take away. We also continued with our money topic and enjoyed playing coin bingo and guess the coin. Make sure to have a look at some coins at home and see if you can tell your parents what they are.

We had a Scots focus this week and learnt all about our famous Scot “James Watt”. We learnt how he invented an improved steam engine and developed the term “horsepower”. We could not believe that his engine was as strong as 26,000 horses! What a lot of horses. We also made our own shape steam engines using 3D shapes, what fun!

Have a look at our confident individuals below. They presented a short summary about James Watt and our shape steam engines.

Happy weekend from all of P1.

P1a Block Play and ICT skills

Another fun filled week in P1a with lots of help from our P7 leaders and the P3 playleaders.

Literacy

This week we learned our first digraph ‘sh’ we learnt that when these 2 letters are together they make 1 sound. We all had fun making shape ships’s and writing sentences with our sh words.

Numeracy

We started our block on subtraction by eating marshmallows to demonstrate “taking away”, we really enjoyed that! Our focus this week was on using concrete materials including blocks, pasta, fingers etc to show what subtraction means. We also used number lines to demonstrate jumping back when subtracting.

HWB

In PE with Mr Logan this week we started a football block by doing some ball skills. Have a look at our concentration when we are catching the ball….

We also did some more work on growth mindset where we focused on 2 things we could do and 1 we couldn’t do “yet”.

P3 and P7 Leader activities

Some of the P7 leaders are doing a 4 week block with us on ICT skills. This week we learnt how to log on and off the computer. We really enjoyed this.

The P3 block play leaders helped us create some structures with our new blocks, we even made a church!

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a

Time, Williamina Fleming and Play Leaders (P3A)

In Numeracy this week we have been continuing to look at subtraction. We learned different strategies to subtract a teens number from 20 and we looked at using different subtraction vocabulary such as ‘minus’ and ‘find the difference’. Some of us were learning how to subtract multiples of 10 and near multiples of 10 from a two-digit number and some of us were linking our addition and subtraction facts and using these to solve problems.

This week we also started to look at time. We revised using o’clock and half past times and then we learned how to use quarter past and quarter to times. We played a game on the computers called ‘Stop the Clock’ where we had to use our knowledge of times to match analogue and digital clocks.

In Literacy this week we have been looking at non-fiction texts. We have been listening to and reading different non-fiction texts and on Monday we learned to find information in non-fiction texts. On Tuesday we used non-fiction texts on the internet to find out information about Williamina Fleming, our Famous Scot focus. We recorded our research notes and then on Wednesday, we used them to write a report about the life of Williamina Fleming. We used interesting titles, subheadings for each section of our reports, an opening paragraph to tell what our reports were about and a closing sentence to round off our reports. Two of us will be sharing our reports at the Scottish assembly next Friday.

This week we were also looking at using different linking words. We completed an activity where we had to select the correct linking word to complete the sentence. Afterwards we chose the correct linking word for different sentences and then we wrote our own sentences using the linking words that we had learned.

On Wednesday we went to our school library. We will be visiting the library every Wednesday just before lunch. We really enjoyed our first visit to our new library and enjoyed reading our new books with our friends.

On French Friday we started to revise our numbers in French. We listened to a French numbers song, played different French numbers games on the Promethean board and matched the words in French to the correct numbers with a partner.

In PE this week, we have been continuing to practise our football skills. We developed our dribbling skills and worked on looking up whilst dribbling by trying to balance cones on our heads. We also practised passing to a partner and then we played a dribbling game against the other teams.

This week we have been continuing to lead play in P1. We really enjoy being play leaders and helping to support free play in both P1 classes. This week we have also been leading block play. Our block play leaders have been taking groups of P1 pupils and leading their learning.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

Wall of Fame P1b

A big well done to P and L for completing their school values grid. We are so proud of them and celebrated their success by putting their names on our Springfield Hall of Fame. Well done!! A proud Primary 1 moment x

Welcome back P1B

Happy New Year to everyone and a big welcome back. It was so nice to see so many smiley faces on Monday.

This week we have had a little revision week to recap on all of our sounds and numbers before we start our new concepts on Monday. We have had a tricky word day to practise our spelling. We also wrote all about our holiday news and wrote some beautiful sentences independently. The progress is incredible! We enjoyed writing thank you letters to Santa on Monday with Miss Baillie. We talked about how important it is to say thank you and show our school value of respect. In Maths we were revising our number bonds to 10 and the concept of addition. We will be starting on Subtraction next week.

We also had a special visitor on Tuesday to come and deliver fun boot camp taster sessions. We all enjoyed playing lots of fun games and even took part in the bleep test to see how fit we were. Some of the P1 boys and girls got up to Level 11!! Wow. Mrs McAulay was so proud. In PE with Mrs McAulay we were developing a range of different skills and worked our way around the stations to practise.

In HWB we have been learning all about having  Growth Mindset. This means that we attack challenges with enthusiasm and make sure we keep telling ourselves that ‘we can do it’. We read a story called ‘My Fantastic Elastic Brain’ and it showed us how we can make our brain stronger when we learn new things and develop new skills. Did you know you can stretch and grow your own brain? Or that making mistakes is one of the best ways your brain learns? Just like how lifting weights helps your muscles get stronger, trying new things without giving up-like finding the courage to put your face in the water the first time you’re at a pool-strengthens your brain.

We talked about Neurons in our brains acting as little messengers and how they get thicker and stronger when we learn new things. So we made a collage of our brain…..we used string to represent the weak neurons and things we cannot do (………..yet!), we used thicker straws to show things that we are learning at the moment and we used strong pipe cleaners to represent things that we are really good at and feel confident at doing (because we have practised them lots).  We each came up with examples of each. These will be sent home today so you can discuss them with your child to reinforce the important message.

A big well done to CH for filling his values sheet. He got to add his name to the Springfield Hall of Fame and we are very proud of him.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Bonne Année et Bonne Retour a classe P1a

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

Literacy

In literacy this week we had lost of fun revision all of our sounds from a-z and all of our common words. We did this by playing games like phonics tig and singing songs etc. Next week we are ready to move onto diagraphs… this is where 2 letters make one sound.

We also did some writing about our Christmas holidays. We managed to all write at least one full sentence about what we did.

Numeracy

This week our focus was on revising our number bonds to 10 and looking back at telling the ‘o’ clock times, days of the week, seasons and months of the year. Almost all of us can name all of the number bonds to 10 (eg 6 and 4, 7 and 3 etc). We also did very well telling the time with analogue and digital clocks.

HWB

This week we took part in a bootcamp session with Mhairi. Primary 1 worked so hard that they got to try the beep test. Everyone did so well with this, what a competitive and resilient bunch! 4 children made it to the end of level 10….impressive….

We have been revising our values this week “resilient, respectful, included, kind, confident”. To reinforce resilience we learnt all about our brains and having a “growth mindset”. We talked about instead of saying “I can’t do it”, we must say “I can’t do it yet”. We also talked about making mistakes and that mistakes are a good thing. When we make a mistake we are learning and helping our brain to get stronger. We are all going to try really hard to be resilient and not give up when something is tricky…

Bon weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a
