P1a’s weekly journey

Numeracy

In subtraction we continued the links to addition by looking again at doubles. We noticed a pattern that each time the answer increased by 2. We even tried to do doubles up to 10+10=20. Some children noticed a pattern that is 2+2=4, 20+20=40….wow.

In money we had to work out which coins we could need to buy something that cost 6p or 12p etc. The children enjoyed this and would love to practice this at home.

Literacy

This week we learnt “oa” and “ow”. We saw that oa as in boat and goat mainly is in the middle, and that ow as in sow and row is mainly at the end of words. We also learnt 2 new tricky words one and you.

IDL/Writing

We read a book called “Oi, get off my train”, it was all about endangered animals trying to get on the train for safety. We then wrote our very first story based on the book. We did a plan first where we drew the beginning, middle and end. We then used the plan to help us write a story with a beginning, middle and end. Mrs Gordon could not believe the quality of our stories!

Health and Wellbeing HWB

This week we were learning about living and growing things. In particular the plan life cycle and the journey from seed to seedling and then plant. We talked about the things a plant needs to survive, light, air, water and soil.

Happy weekend!

P1a weekly news

Literacy

Our new sounds this week were ‘igh’ and ‘y’ which both make the I sound. We learnt that igh is a trigraph and talked about tri meaning 3. We remembered the rule that most times ‘igh’ goes in the middle of words and y at the end. We need lots of practice though as it is very tricky…. Our new common words were “come” and “said”, most of us already knew these from our reading books.

On World Book Day we read with some of the P3’s. Some of us read to the P3’s and some P3’s read to us. You can see some of our siblings reading together which was lovely! D was so tired that his story made him fall asleep in our reading corner…

Numeracy

Our subtraction journey continued with a dip into the links between addition and subtraction to make “fact families”. This is a very tricky concept that we will revisit regularly. An example with 2,8 and 10 is 2+8=10, 8+2=10, 10-2=8, 10-8=2.

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a

Primary 1B – w/e 8th March 2019

In Literacy we were excited to be learning our first trigraph ‘igh’ and the grapheme ‘y’ (as in cry).  We discovered that the ‘igh’ trigraph is mainly found in the middle of words and the ‘y’ grapheme is mainly found at the end.  We agreed that our language can sometimes be a bit tricky to know which word has which sound!  We have also been practising our new tricky words – come and said.

In Numeracy we have been learning about fact families and how addition and subtraction are linked.  We learned that there are three numbers in each fact family and saw how these numbers are related to one another.  We managed to work together to write the four number sentences – two addition and two subtraction – for each family.

We continued our work on Money too, working out change due and figuring out which coins would give the correct amount.  It was interesting to hear many of the children say that they had never seen change being given and weren’t sure what ‘change’ was.  We came to the conclusion that this was because shopping is often paid by Bank Card.

Within our History of Transport learning this week we looked at different modes of transport from the past and compared them to their present day equivalent.  We had an interesting discussion about the differences that we noticed between them.

Our class train is almost finished!  We had fun painting and colouring wheels and painted the final carriage.  Whilst we were painting we discovered that if we mix different colours together we can make a new colour! The favourite combinations were red and yellow, making orange and blue and yellow, making green.  We have decided that we still need a funnel and a fire (made of coloured paper, of course!) for the engine as we have decided our train is a steam train.

J brought in a real piece of railway to show the class.  It was very, very heavy!  J also brought in train magnets for everyone.  We would like to thank J’s dad for these!

To celebrate World Book Day we enjoyed some paired reading time with P3A and had fun sharing stories with one another.

Have a lovely weekend.

School and Nursery News from this Week

Today we held our next ‘Wellbeing Indicator’ assembly focused on ‘we are achieving.’   As you all know, we track each pupil’s health and wellbeing on a daily and termly basis at Springfield and Bonnytoun. We have noticed from the data that we gather, that some children  have the false perception that they are not achieving in school or are worried about how well they are doing. This is something that we are seeking to rectify by the messages that we give our learners and we’d ask for your support with this at home. Everyone is doing well and all children in school and nursery are making progress.

We talked today in assembly about ‘achievement’ being about progress. We also learned that achievement can be realised when you believe in yourself, practise a skill until it is mastered and never give up! It was also explained to children that we need to be comfortable with our own strengths and weeknesses and see the beauty in our uniqueness.

We also had a ‘sneaky peek’ at the Glee performance which some of our P6 and P7 pupils will showcase at Howden Park Centre in the next few weeks. The children look and sound amazing and we can’t wait to see them perform on the night. Thank you to Mrs Bell for her support with this.

Pupil achievements for this week:

– Well done to A and K in P1 for their achievements in gymnastics and Enjoy-a-ball.

-A brilliant effort from L in P3 for making progress in swimming.

-Well done to S and O in P4 for gymnastics success.

-Finally to A in P3 and R in P4 also for making progress in swimming.

Have a lovely weekend!

P1a weekly news

Literacy

We learnt 2 new digraphs this week “ee” and “ea”. It is quite hard to tell which one to use so we are trying to practice this as much as possible. We are pointing to our ears for the ea and our eyes for the ee (like see). We also worked with partners to find ee words in a story.

Numeracy

In subtraction this week we tackled the tricky topic of missing number sums. P1a worked so hard and shared their strategies with the class. Some people used fingers, some used blocks, some number lines and some just did it in their heads…It was especially hard when the first number was missing eg ? – 2 = 8.

We also had to use different strategies with money this week. We had a jar of coins and had to add them up. Then we had to fill a jar with the coins to make an amount eg 12p. Some of us had to work out that to make 86p we should first start with a 50p. Mrs Gordon couldn’t believe how well we did!

IDL/Transport

This week we have been designing and describing trains.

Fairtrade

We had a visit from 2 ladies from the Linlithgow Fair Trade group. We learnt all about farmer’s getting a fair price for their products and played some games. We then got to taste some yummy Fair trade chocolate!

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a.

Primary 1B – w/e 1st March 2019

We have had a busy week in Primary 1b.

As part of our transport focus, we have begun to construct our class train station.  We came up with lots of ideas for signs which we would need in the station.  We decided we would like to build a train for the station and have had great fun painting our train engine and carriages.  We can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s finished!  Construction pictures will follow next week!

In Literacy we have been practising our new tricky words – all and some – and have learned 2 new digraphs – ee and ea.  We have been working hard blending words together using our magnetic letters and have successfully been matching pictures and words.

In Numeracy we have been continuing our work on Subtraction.  We made a human number line in the playground and enjoyed working out who would be the answer to the subtraction questions we came up with.  We also had fun working in pairs, writing our calculations in chalk on the playground.

Our first session of block play with P3 went very well.  As you can see the construction was impressive!

As part of Fairtrade Fortnight, the class had a visit from the Linlithgow Fairtrade group on Wednesday and learned about different types of Fairtrade products.  They had the chance to taste a little piece of Fairtrade chocolate too which they enjoyed!

Have a lovely weekend.

Weekly News at SPS and Bonnytoun

It has been a short but busy week here in school and nursery.

Today, Mrs Newton and P6A led a very interesting assembly about democracy and  The Scottish Parliament. We also found out about some exciting plans for Fairtrade Fortnight which begins next week.

Our nursery children started their work on Fairtrade today by ordering some Fairtrade bananas on the Internet for snack!

There will be lots of Fairtrade activities and competitions in school over the next two weeks and we will be holding a Bake Sale on 7th March.

Last night, many families came along to the Fun Languages Evening at Linlithgow Primary School. This was a hugely successful event which saw French and Spanish languages being promoted through songs, games and other activities. Thank you to Mrs Gordon and the rest of the staff who helped to organise this. We continue to teach French from nursery to P7 and Spanish in upper stages.

Mr Wells and I have been very busy visiting lots of different classes this week to take part in writing lessons and to check that we are delivering high quality writing experiences for our children. We are delighted with the standard of writing produced by our pupils across all stages. Thank you to all staff who continue to work extremely hard and take on board guidance to continually improve.

Pupil Achievements this week:

-Well done to two of our lovely P1 pupils! Firstly to L for her gymnastics award and also to D for going on an adventure down a mine!

Have a super weekend!

Springfield and Bonnytoun News

We were looking forward to our holiday weekend today, as P3 led a superb assembly about ‘forces.’ Thank you Mrs Kennedy for putting on such an informative assembly which was a lovely way to end a busy week.

We are very proud of our children’s  knowledge and abilities in Science at Springfield, thanks to the expertise of Mrs Tulloch and Mrs Begarnie. Mrs Tulloch is busy working with P7 on their STEM project this term, which is to build a moveable buggy. Our STEM family learning event will take place in Term 4 where you will be able to take part in a STEM challenge with your child.

Achievements this week:

-Well done to D in P3 for his success with Linlithgow Rose Football Team.

-Congratulations to F in P4/5 for his efforts at Cubs and to A in P1 for the same in Beavers! Well done boys!

-Finally, we are extremely proud of a group of our P7 children who came second (by one point!) in the Linlithgow cluster schools, Inter-house Quiz!

Have a lovely long weekend everyone!

P1’s Magic Train Journey and more…

This week we continued our Magic Train Ride journey as part of our transport focus. We had imagined we were on a magic train and we wrote and drew about what we saw. Mrs Gordon and Mrs Reid were really impressed with our descriptions. We also had a lot of fun making tickets and building trains and stations.

In numeracy we continued our subtraction journey. We loved ordering our number line and then jumping to practice subtraction number sentences.

We read the Great Pet Sale again as part of our money work. We even had our own pet sale where we had to make a price tag, put it on our pet and then find the correct coins to buy our toy…what fun!

We decided to make Valentine Cards for our loved ones. N has a real talent for making 3D roses and taught the whole class including Mrs Gordon how to do this!

The week was Scotland loves languages week so Mrs Gordon had 2 of her P5 Language Ambassadors come and teach “el gruffalo” in Spanish to the children. We learnt head, shoulders, knees and toes in Spanish and numbers to 5. Que bien!

Happy long weekend, Mrs Gordon, Mrs Reid, P1a and P1b x

P1a out and about at the park

Our new digraphs this week were ‘ai’ and ‘ay’. We learnt that shy ‘i’ likes to go in the middle around his friends whilst toughy ‘y’ likes to be at the end of words. We really liked to do the actions for these.

We all loved our house treat trip to the park on Wednesday. As you can see from the photos we really enjoyed our exciting trip when we got to play with our friends.

In numeracy this week we continued our subtraction journey. We really enjoyed the skittles, subtraction bus stop game and subtraction smash with the play dough. We are all starting to remember our subtraction facts from 10. We also had fun with money. This week we used different coins to make different amounts. We also read the great pet sale, next week we are going to have our own pet sale and pretend to sell some of our class and own soft toys.

In IDL we launched our new topic for this term. It is a history topic where we will be looking at transport, our first port of call is trains. We went on a magic train journey with our magic tickets and had to draw a picture of what we could see from our train window. This was the planning for our writing which we will do on Monday when we will get back on the magic train. Mrs Gordon can’t wait to read what we saw from the window…

Happy weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a.
