Springfield and Bonnytoun News…

The second week of term has flown by with children enjoying their new classrooms and teachers.  Our assembly today was on the Well-being Indicator of ‘being safe’ and all children learned how to keep safe on roads, when out in public and when near fire, water and electricity. We also talked about keeping safe online.

School News:

We have been thinking about how to make homework consistent across school and also, so that it provides a more flexible home learning experience for children and families. Your child will now complete reading and spelling tasks weekly but will be given the whole term to complete a variety of other tasks. You will  receive home learning for this term, next week, and in an easy to follow grid format. We hope that you like it. Please give us your feedback as usual. In early years, it is really important that children are learning sounds and reading each evening if this is possible.

We will be launching a new school website in the next few weeks. Our blog will still stand and will feed into this, as will our Twitter account and school app. The website is a council requirement and it is designed to give an overview of our school as well as to provide links to documents and policies. We will give you more information on this when the website is ready to launch.

Here is a picture of some of our certificate winners from assembly today.

Get well soon to Victor our nursery guinea pig!  He has been staying at Mrs T’s house for the past couple of weeks as he has been poorly and has had many trips to the vet. 😢We hope that he is on the mend and back in nursery soon. Again, we will keep you posted of his progress. Thank you to Mrs T and her family for taking such good care of him.

Have a lovely weekend everyone,

Love,

Love to Ride Cycling September

Hi

Please see email below from Wendy from Transition Linlithgow. I have registered Springfield Primary with Love to Ride Challenge for the month of September. Please sign up and log any cycle rides long or short and see your achievements and health improving!

If you need a bike I have six that families have kindly donated to hire out for a small donation. These have been taken to the Bike Library in Livingston to repair and are now ready to go on the road or a quieter path. Please contact me at louise.mcalpine@westlothian.org.uk if you need any more information.

Kind Regards

Mrs Louise McAlpine

Hello,

My name’s Wendy and I’m emailing from Transition Linlithgow.  The reason for my email is that we are organising the Linlithgow Challenge – a fun and friendly cycle challenge happening in September that isn’t about cycling as many miles as possible, but encouraging as many people to cycle as possible for just 10 minutes or more.

Every time you log a trip in September you get entered into a draw to win one of our many great prizes (including a new bike), and anyone who encourages someone else to ride a bike also gets additional entries into the prize draw.  What’s more, community groups can take part and compete against other groups and workplaces of a similar size to see who can get the most people cycling.

Entrance and participation is completely free of charge, and for more details, and to register please go to our Linlithgow Challenge website: https://www.lovetoride.net/linlithgowchallenge

www.lovetoride.net
Love to Ride is all about getting more people enjoying and discovering how easy and fun riding a bike can be. Whether you ride all the time, or you’re new to riding, join the Love to Ride community, help grow cycling, make our neighborhoods more bike friendly, have some fun with your friends and win some great prizes.

We can also help and support your group to promote all forms of active travel (not just cycling) – and have lots of services on offer. From free personalised travel planning, to free fuel efficient driver training, to route advice, maps, car sharing, bike maintenance and more.  We also have a small fleet of electric bikes available for free hire at the end of August.

If you can share the Challenge with group members that would be brilliant – it would be great to see your group taking part in the Challenge.  If you have any problems signing up do let me know.

Additionally, if there’s any way we can help promote active travel within your group, e.g. me giving a short talk to group members about the services we offer, an e-bike taster session, to even helping to organise car-sharing to group meetings, then do let me know as I’d be delighted to help.

Kind regards,

Wendy

Welcome Back to School!

Welcome back to school everyone for a new session!

I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed the lovely weather all summer.

What a busy week it has been and the time has flown! The staff were all in school last Monday for an INSET training day and took time to ensure classrooms and the school area were looking smart for our pupils rejoining us on Tuesday. Thank you to all of our staff for their hard work this week. All children have settled into school well, including our new Primary 1 pupils who have been brilliant. Our new Primary 7 pupils have been a credit to their parents over the past week, taking on their buddy and leadership roles with gusto! Across all stages, children have been settled, calm, well behaved and happy.

Our nursery have welcomed many new starts with lots of children joining our Springfield family.

We have been working on our school values this week and creating our Rights, Respecting Schools class charters to establish our class and school ethos for this session.

We will publish our Family Learning calendar in the next week with informative events (and some for fun!)  planned throughout the year.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Bonnytoun Achieve’s Excellence! ⭐️⭐️

We are absolutely overjoyed and extremely proud to announce that our nursery has just  achieved an excellent grading from the recent, unannounced Care Inspectorate visit.

We were inspected on only two Care Standards due to  the existing high performance of the nursery. This is the first time that an excellent grade has been secured in the history of the nursery and indeed, is a relatively rare grading to achieve.

We gained the grading for Pupil Care and Support which, to us is the most important facet of our work. The quality of our nursery environment was graded as ‘very good’ and with continued work we are aiming for excellence in this area too.

Part of our commendation was for the dignity and respect that we show to children at all times and the way that we support their learning and care, through our school values.

We have worked so hard this year as a team to achieve this recognition and we are so proud. We will never rest on our laurels and will continue to strive to be the very best that we can be for the children under our care.

On a personal note, I’d like to say a massive thank you to Mr Wells for allowing me to lead the nursery for the past year, to Mrs Tomcyznski for being a true asset as she seamlessly runs the nursery floor each day and to Mrs Brass, Mrs Parlett, Mrs Fraser, Mrs Welsh, Ms Gifford, Mrs Malcolm and Mrs Mulvenna for being truly outstanding early years practitioners. I am so proud of each and every effort which has gone into making a great team! Thank you all!

The full inspection report can be viewed on the Care Inspectorate website.

JRSO’s Cycle Recycle and Dr Bike

Thank you to everyone in the school and nursery that supported the JRSO’s  Cycle Recycle and Dr Bike session this week.

We received seven bikes and stabilisers for the Cycle Recycle which have been taken away by West Lothian Bike Library to be repaired and then will be brought back to hire out to anyone that could use a bike. Vouchers will be given out tomorrow (Friday). Please check your child’s bag if you donated a bike for a £10 voucher from the bike library.  Please email Mrs McAlpine to arrange collection if you did not receive a voucher. louise.mcalpine@westlothian.org.uk

Dr Bike session was to make sure the bikes were safe to use. Twelve bikes were booked in to be checked over and have minor adjustments carried out. A card given to state what action was taken and any further recommended repairs.

If you would like more information please contact the bike library on www.wlbikelibrary.co.uk Tel 07724667321

Park and Stride Successful First Week

Thanks to all who have attended the new ‘Park and Stride’ JRSO (Junior Road Safety Officers) committee and parents initiative.

Eight families attended this week on our trial of every Tuesday (except the Marches) and Friday until the summer holidays, starting from the dentist beside Spar to the school. We meet between 8.15am to 8.25am. If you would like to join us, please download the attached form (link below) and send to Mrs Louise McAlpine at louise.mcalpine@westlothian.org.uk with your details or ask your child to collect a form directly from P3/4.

Park and stride letter to parents

There will be a trophy awarded from Transition Linlithgow for the class that take part most each month.

Please let Mrs McAlpine know if your child is starting Springfield Primary, (maybe from nursery) after the holidays and you would like to join us after the holidays or start coming before the holidays.

If the trial is successful we will extend to every day after the holidays and possibly extend the route to become a ‘Walking Bus’.

Our Weekly News from SPS and Bonnytoun…

I started the week off at camp with P7 this week and what fun we had! The weather was just gorgeous and all children were an absolute credit to their parents and school. Thank you so much P7 for being superstars!

Victor and Jack our two little nursery Guineas Pigs got a new home yesterday which Mrs T and I went to buy and is in the proceess of being assembled. It’s an amazing home and will allow the piggies to spend more time in the nursery garden enjoying the sunshine and grass.  The piggies also had their first bath with the help of Mrs Brass to ensure that they remain clean, fragrant  and healthy!

We held an assembly today on the last  of our Wellbeing Indicators  to be discussed this year, which is also one of our school values, ‘ I am included.’  We talked about how we always include others at Springfield regardless of their skin colour, religious belief, gender, dress sense etc etc. We learned about the power of being unique and of celebrating our individuality. We continue to promote the message that it is not okay to leave people out of our play nor is it okay to make negative comments about another person.

Here are the achievements for this week:

-Well done to O in our infant department for lots of success in gymnastics! Keep it up!

-Congratulations to all of the children in our embroidery after-school club and thank you to Mrs Tulloch and her helpers for running it. These children took part in a local competition and are featured in the latest edition of The Black Bitch magazine! We are very proud!

-Well done to James Hammond whose STEM design is through to the next stage of the Scottish Young Engineer Awards. We are rooting for you James!

Have a great weekend everyone! Next week is fitness week and we have lots going on so it will be action-packed.

A Hugely Successful Week All Round!

What a week we have had here at Springfield and Bonnytoun! Our nursery has recently been visited by the Care Inspectorate and we have had extremely positive feedback. The report and more information will follow shortly but we are delighted with our feedback and really excited to share our news when it comes!  In school we have had a quality improvement visit this week from  fellow headteachers and our Education Officer and they were delighted with the progress that the school has made in all areas. We are so grateful for the hard work of all staff and the  support of all parents, carers and friends who make up the whole Springfield community. We couldn’t have achieved what we have without you all! Thank you!

Mrs Kennedy and P1B held a lovely assembly today about keeping healthy. The children all spoke confidently and looked so sweet as they sang and danced in their sports clothes.

Here are the achievements for this week:

-Well done to Mrs McAlpine and the Junior Road Safety Commitee for helping Springfield to achieve the ‘cycle friendly school’ award. Great news!

– Congratulations to a number of our infants for success in swimming! Here they are below with their certificates…

Springfield and Bonnytoun News…

We held a highly successful STEM curriculum evening this week which Mrs Tulloch expertly ran. Thank you to all families who came out to learn about our approach to STEM at Springfield and Bonnytoun. The marble challenge proved a big hit with families competing against each other to make the fastest run!

Did you know that STEM starts in our nursery through our block play and use of loose parts? We are proud of our approach to block play and this week worked with the authority to hold a successfully training session on the benefits of this type of play in early childhood development. We had early years practitioners attending from both council run and private nurseries.

Here are some of our nursery children engaging in block play and drawing their designs.

P2A and Miss Mudd worked hard to deliver a lovely Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed assembly this morning. We loved seeing the children all dressed up and performing their lines with confidence!

Here are the achievements for this week:

Well done to M and G in P1 for coming along with the products of their free play. M made a knight’s outfit and G made a super model. Free play and allowing children to express themselves in early years is part of our Play Strategy which Mrs Kennedy has helped to lead all year. Thank you Mrs Kennedy for your efforts.

Have a happy weekend!

Love Miss Baillie x💫
