Fitness Week in P2A

We have had a great week learning about healthy food and exercise. We had golf and football tasters which we thoroughly enjoyed. We had a great time at Sports Day and Miss Mudd was so proud of us for demonstrating all of our school values. We were so supportive of each other and had a great attitude towards the whole day. We really enjoyed the smoothie making. We got to make 2 smoothies and talked about which one we liked best and why. We have also been starting each day with a session of yoga to ensure we have healthy minds as well as healthy bodies. Even the teachers had an early morning Yoga session run my Miss Baillie. We learnt all about different food groups and the Eatwell plate. We even made our own collages of the Eatwell plate to show the different types of food we need to eat to have a balanced diet.

In IDL we were making more maps. We talked about our journey to school and drew a map to show our partners how we get to school. We then created a giant 3D map of Springfield. We worked in groups and used the construction materials to build some of the key landmarks. To extend our learning we then built some key landmarks in Linlithgow and talked about where they would be in relation to our school. This week we were also learning about Australia. Thank you to M for bringing in lots of photographs and objects to tell us about her time in Australia. A big thank you to Mr Turton for giving up his time to come and speak to both P2 classes about Australia. We learnt a lot and the children loved it.

We held our Springfield’s Got Talent auditions this week and will be choosing 2 winners to go through to the finals in the last week of school. A huge well done to all of the children who auditioned. They showed great courage and showed off just how talented the pupils are Springfield really are.

Marvellous Maps

In Literacy this week we have been revising magic ‘e’. We made magic wands and turned our vowels from short sounds into long sounds. We played magic e board games, became magic e detectives and played magic e bingo.

We finished our class novel ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. We were looking back at the description of the different rooms in the factory. We created a map of the factory and labelled it then we invented our own room. Here are a few of our ideas…..

  • The Invisible Chocolate Coin room – when you eat the coins you turn invisible.
  • The Gold Chocolate Bunny room – there is a field of edible grass with gold chocolate bunnies that you can eat.
  • The Bouncy Bubble room –
  • The Chocolate Mine room – you go in here to mine for chocolate with a pick axe. There are chunks of fudge in the walls too. The chocolate all gets sent to a furnace and melted down into the chocolate river.

Well done to N and Z for making a treasure hunt for the whole class last Friday. They showed our value of kindness by hiding little presents for all of the class. The class loved trying to find them and were very grateful. They even made us some maps to help us find the hidden treasure.

Well done to E and K for their achievements out of school. E ran a beach race and brought his medal in to show us. K won a trophy at football.

In IDL we were learning all about maps this week. We practised drawing objects from an aerial (bird’s eye view). We discussed the reasons we use maps and looked at all different types of map. We then went outside and drew sketch maps of the school grounds. We had to try and label the different classrooms which was very tricky. We then used our computer time to explore Google Maps. We tried to find our houses and took a little tour of Linlithgow. We also started to learn about Japan. We made some Japanese fans and had a go at origami. We also learnt how to count to 10 in Japanese.

In Maths we finished up our work on division. We started to learn about measure. We practised using rulers and meter sticks. We used measuring tapes to measure our bodies and even used a trundle wheel to measure our playground. We started to learn about converting cm to m.

It is Fitness Week next week so we are looking forward to getting our sports clothes on and getting active. There is a fitness week homework grid with some suggested activities you may like to try at home.

Have a lovely weekend,

Super slime in Primary 2

In Literacy this week we were writing character descriptions. We worked in groups to draw a familiar character then had to fill the inside of the character with words to describe their personality. Around the outside we wrote adjectives to describe their appearance. We then shared these with the class and discussed our ideas. We then created our own characters for our Fantasy stories.

In Numeracy we continued our learning on division. We practised sharing sweets between different amounts of people. We also used the Numicon to learn about the ‘grouping’ method and started to link this to our knowledge of multiplication. We started to apply our learning to real life problems. Miss Mudd needed some help with the seating plan for her wedding so we had to split the guests up equally onto different tables. We also used our problem solving mats to show all of the different strategies we can use to tackle a multiplication problem.

In IDL we were focusing on mapping and Atlas skills. We learnt how to use an Index and worked in pairs to complete an atlas scavenger hunt. Next week we will start to draw maps of our local area.

In ICT we were learning how to use the Paint programme.  We used it to draw out our story settings and characters that we had created. Our P6 buddies came to help us as it was a little bit tricky.

In Art we were learning about colour mixing. We were using different colours to create an African sunset and we enjoyed experimenting with the different shades and tones. We then cut our some animal silhouettes to bring it to life.

On Tuesday we made some slime for the class. Last week we had been learning about the i-e sound so this fit in perfectly. We have enjoyed playing with it in our free play time.

A big well done to N and E for their achievements at Gymnastics. We are very proud of you girls.

Amazing Arrays

In Maths we have been learning about multiplication. We had to make sure we understood the concept of multiplying before we then learnt our 2, 5 and 10 times tables. An array is an arrangement of objects in rows. We can use these to show different multiplication sums. We practised making arrays using lots of different objects. We also went on an array hunt around school.

A lot of the children have been making wonderful Charlie and the Chocolate Factory models. We have some very talented boys and girls in P2A! Miss Mudd is very proud of you all.

Last week we continued our learning about India. Abhinav’s mum and sister came and spoke to the classes. We asked some wonderful questions and discussed the different photographs. This week we have been learning about Africa and Miss Mudd spoke to us about her time as a teacher in Kenya. She showed us photographs of the schools there and we compared them to our own school. We did some work on comparing a traditional Kenyan village to Linlithgow.

We also learnt all about Fairtrade and the story of how chocolate is made. We will be sharing this in our class assembly. A lot of our time this week has been spent making props and costumes for our assembly next week.

In Phonics we were revising the ir alternative spelling. We also worked on our sentence writing and had to write a sentence based on a picture Miss Mudd put up.

P2A were also doing some Art work inspired by Van Gogh.

Have a lovely weekend.

Interesting India

Literacy

We were learning all about the ‘Chocolate Room’ in our novel. We read through the description together and picked out all of the key words. We made a list of all of the items that were described. We then created a picture of what we thought it would look like. We had a great discussion about the difference between films and books. We felt that with a book, you had to create the pictures yourself using your imagination. We showed our pictures to the class and identified any similarities and differences between our drawings. We then watched a clip of the film version of the story to see how they had created the setting.

We started our new Big Writing Adventure this week. Max and Ant were at the beach so we had some great discussion about the seaside. We then practised writing postcards to say what we had been doing and what we had seen. We were learning how to use exclamation marks in our sentences.

We have also started our new writing genre for this term: Fantasy stories. We looked at lots of examples of Fantasy stories and picked out key themes. They were often set in magical worlds and often had a magical object to transport them. Some of them were about a journey or a quest. We look at stories like Harry Potter, The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Next week we will begin to create our own magical settings for our story.

Numeracy

In Numeracy we were introduced to multiplication. We practised making groups with the cubes and Numicon. We then progressed to using repeated addition for multiplication. We used the story of Noah’s Ark to help us with the 2 times table. We looked at how to jump up using a number line. We also learnt about arrays and looked at lots of examples of arrays in our every day life.

IDL

In our computer time we practised our typing skills. We went on Microsoft Word and wrote some sentences about the countries we had been learning about. We learnt how to use the space bar and back space.

In IDL we were looking at India this week. We compared photographs of cities and villages in India. We talked about the similarities and differences with Linlithgow. We had 4 stations to work around: Rangoli patters, Henna hands, Indian flags with the peg boards and making clay pots. We talked about the Taj Mahal, traditional foods and farming methods and traditional clothes.

A big thank you to Emma’s mum for coming in to talk to the P2 classes about Russia. She showed us some wonderful photographs of the buildings, traditional clothes and food. We learnt how to write our names in Russian and compared the Russian alphabet to the English alphabet. We asked so many great questions!

A big WELL DONE to EC who made a fantastic model at home of the Wonka chocolate factory. It is absolutely incredible and we have been showing it off around the school all week. Also well done to ZC who has also been busy at home making a sweetie river! So much hard work happening at home which is great to see.

We also had some special visitors to school. We loved going to see the sheep and hens.

We hope you all have a great long weekend.

See you all on Wednesday!

Miss Mudd and P2A x

Thank you

A big thank you to Mrs Bryson and Ruaridh for taking the time to make this fantastic Eggdictator. The class have absolutely loved playing with it this week and it has taken pride of place in our new role play area.

I really appreciate all of the support from parents this week. Many of you have sent in wonderful artefacts and objects from other countries and it has stimulated some great discussion in our classroom. I feel it is so important to learn about other cultures and the world we live in so thank you for your help.

Have a lovely weekend.

16.4.18 P2A

In Numeracy we started learning about Fractions. We were revising halves and quarters of shapes. We also learnt about halving numbers and linked this to our work on doubles. We had lots of practical activities set up to help us apply our new skills to different contexts.

In Literacy we were learning about how Alan the explorer travelled to Antarctica. We talked about different modes of transport then had to use different sentence starters to describe Alan’s journey. We were learning how to use an Atlas and a globe.

We have also been learning how to use a dictionary this week. We used our knowledge of alphabetical order to help us.

P2A and P2B worked together to look at different landmarks in Linlithgow. We had a great discussion about our favourite places and talked about the Geography of Linlithgow. We then mixed the classes up and worked in pairs to create a poster to advertise our favourite places.

We continued our work on Charlie and the Chocolate factory and this week we were focussing on the characters in the story. We created a character profile for Charlie and Grandpa Joe to demonstrate what we have learnt about them so far. We had to use examples from the story to support our answers and we had to use the word ‘because’ to help us explain our thinking.

In phonics Miss Mudd’s group were learning all about questions. We learnt how to use a question mark and we were learning how to spell some of our key questioning words. We had to look at different pictures and think of questions we could ask about them.

With our milk this week, we have been looking at different pictures and developing our inference skills. We have to look for clues in the picture and try to make inferences and predictions based on what we can see. We had to look for clues and find the evidence. It is like becoming a reading detective!

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the sunshine

Welcome back from P2A

A big welcome back to everyone. We are now into our final term in Primary 2! It has been a very busy week  so here are a few of our highlights.

We have been very busy transforming our classroom into our very own chocolate factory and sweet shop. It was a bit of a clue as to what our class novel is this term….. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We have started reading our novel and we received news that Willy Wonka was looking for some new members for his inventing team. We got straight to work in designing our own fabulous sweets and also designed the packaging to go with it. We evaluated other packaging and used this to generate our own success criteria. We then created a bank of wow words to help us name our fabulous sweeties. We tried to use some alliteration to make our names catchy.

We had…….

Fruity Fun – a sweet that changes flavour in your mouth

BonBon Boom! – a bonbon that explodes in your mouth

Fighting Fizzy – it jumps around in your tummy

Friday Fun Bubblegum – a sweet that you can only eat on a Friday

Jelly Jump – jelly beans that jump in your tummy

Book Worm – a worm shaped sweet that makes you good at reading and when you bite a bit off – it grows back again!

We have also started our new Big Writing Adventure and received a message from Alan the explorer telling us he is going on an expedition to Antarctica. We used the internet, the library and videos to learn all about this wonderful place. We worked in groups to create mind maps to show how our learning has developed. We keep adding our new knowledge to our mind maps. Alan asked us to help him decide what to pack in his suitcase. Miss Mudd brought in some items to stimulate some discussion and we had to give reasons as to why we would take that item.

We also used a range of different materials to create a collage of Antarctica. We used lots of cold colours and tried to use some of our knowledge of that environment to help us. We included penguins, seals, mountains and icebergs.

We have also been learning about alphabetical order and had lots of different stations to work round to help us practise putting items in alphabetical order.

In Numeracy we have been learning about numbers to 1000. We built on our knowledge of place value to 100 and extended this to beyond 100. We used the base ten blocks to build different numbers and practised partitioning the numbers with a partner. We then looked at how to compare and order numbers to 1000.

In PE we joined up with Primary 2B and played some team relay games. Here we are in action!

In Art we continued to develop our drawing skills. This week we were looking at our playground and discussed what the playground is used for. We used drama to act out our ideas. We then started to focus on the shapes of our bodies when we are doing these actions. We drew stick men to show the shape of our bodies when we are running, hopping, skipping, playing football. We worked in partners so one person could act it out whilst the other person drew the shape.

We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend

Happy Easter from P2A

In Primary 2 this week we continued with our Big Writing Adventure. We received some video messages from the Wolf asking us to listen to his side of the story. We sequenced his version of events and put them on a story mountain. We then created our own story mountains to summarise the story. Miss Mudd then gave each group a picture from the story and we had to write some sentences to go with it. We worked really hard to use WOW words and pretended to ‘jump into the picture’ so we could describe what we could see, hear, smell and touch. We then put all of our sentences back together to create a new class story! The Fairytale Times then sent us an email asking us to become reporters for the day and write an article for the newspaper. We learnt all about headlines and the features of a newspaper report. We then had a go at our own.

T and D made a theatre in their free play. They used the puppets to create an alternative ending to the story of Little Red Riding Hood.

For reading homework we have been learning about non-fiction books. One group had a book all about how to make a comic. Mrs McKay very kindly went and bought us a real comic to have a look at! We loved the pictures and enjoyed talking about the different stories.

The Finger Gym had an Easter theme this week. Here are the girls decorating their eggs with the stones and gems.

In Maths we have been learning about number sequences and patterns. We started to look at numbers to 1000 and talked about HTU.

In Art we were practising our drawing skills. We were thinking about people and pets that we see every day. We talked about their appearance and discussed all of the little details. We then had to have a go at using a continuous line to draw the outline. We found it tricky not to take our pen off the paper.

The Infant department have all chosen to do a book study for our displays for Term 4. We chose Dog’s Don’t Do Ballet’ as we had started to so some work on this book earlier in the year. We continued our work this week. We made a display outside our classroom. Some of the children decided to use their free play time to make a puppet show about the story. They made finger puppets and brought the characters to life. It brought in quite an audience!

Miss Baillie also asked us to produce some work on ‘The Snail and the Whale’ for the corridor display. We learnt all about the different settings in the story and worked in groups to create pictures to show the snail’s journey. We then used WOW words to describe the different environments.

A bit of a catch up!

LITERACY

I am using this week to catch up with some of our news. With snow days, trips and lots of visitors – we have got a lot of learning to fill you in on!

Over the last few weeks we have been on a Big Writing Adventure with Little Red Riding Hood. We had a video message from Agent Fizz asking us to help him and Finley (The Woodcutter’s son). We re-told the story using fabulous sentence starters. Then we had to use WOW words to describe the big, bad wolf. We used these lovely describing words to make a wanted poster. We also created a collage of the setting using natural materials. We wrote some brilliant description to describe the forest and set the scene.

“Little Red Riding Hood tiptoed through the deep, mysterious forrest” (ET)

“I was walking along the bright, open path until everything went silent and mysterious” (EM)

“I feel like someone is watching me and I am scared. I hear crunching of the leaves and the trees are tall and dark” (CL)

We have been doing some drama with Ms Crombie about the lonely dragon. We were learning about different feelings and how our feelings change in different situations. We enjoyed creating our own dragons, building a scary cave our of material and working in groups to create a freeze frame.

We have also been looking at non-fiction books and learning all about how they are different to stories. We learnt about the Contents page and the Glossary.

MATHS

We have been learning about Measurement. We used our hands and feet to measure the length of objects around the classroom. We then introduced the Metre stick and used our estimating skills to guess the length of objects. We then went on to look at Weight. We explored how to use different types of scales and used our skills to measure out ingredients to make Easter chocolate nests.

IDL and other

ZC sent in some photos from home to show us that she had been making porridge and gruel. She was comparing them and rated them out of 20! It is so nice to see the learning continuing at home too. RB and TK created a workhouse scene at after-school club. They had thought about the different facts we had learnt about the conditions in the workhouse. It showed a lot of detail. BW brought in his Beavers jumper and talked to us about the different badges that he has achieved. We are very proud of your hard work B.

Miss Mudd found a box of Victorian artefacts so we had a great afternoon looking at these and discussing their uses. We compared an old hot water bottle to a modern day one. We compared a metal iron to our electric ones. Some of the boys had a game of marbles and played with some Victorian toys.

We were also learning about Florence Nightingale and Victorian hospitals. We looked at some pictures of the conditions of the hospitals before Florence Nightingale tried to help. We learnt about the difference that she made to nursing and how many lives she had saved. We then spent some of the afternoon playing with the hospitals role play pack and comparing the instruments and equipment we have now to the past.
