A farewell to P1B

What a fabulous final week I have had with my class. We have been writing with our new digraphs, had a wonderful trip to the park and finished off with a pyjama party. I am going to miss them all so much but I am excited to read the blog and follow their progress for the rest of their time in Primary 1.

I also want to  say a HUGE thank you to all of the wonderful P1B parents who have been so supportive and kind to me this year. The babies have been showered with beautiful gifts and I am completely overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity shown towards me and my family this week. Thank you all so much! I feel extremely lucky to work in such a fantastic school and to have had the opportunity to work with such an enthusiastic class. I am incredibly proud of each and every child in P1B. The progress they have made so far is phenomenal and I know they will continue to thrive with Mrs Reid.

I hope to see you all soon for a visit!

P1 play at the park

We had the best time EVER today with our trip to the park. All of the children enjoyed their treat for collecting so many house points.  Here are some pictures to show you what we got up to……

Wall of Fame P1b

A big well done to P and L for completing their school values grid. We are so proud of them and celebrated their success by putting their names on our Springfield Hall of Fame. Well done!! A proud Primary 1 moment x

Welcome back P1B

Happy New Year to everyone and a big welcome back. It was so nice to see so many smiley faces on Monday.

This week we have had a little revision week to recap on all of our sounds and numbers before we start our new concepts on Monday. We have had a tricky word day to practise our spelling. We also wrote all about our holiday news and wrote some beautiful sentences independently. The progress is incredible! We enjoyed writing thank you letters to Santa on Monday with Miss Baillie. We talked about how important it is to say thank you and show our school value of respect. In Maths we were revising our number bonds to 10 and the concept of addition. We will be starting on Subtraction next week.

We also had a special visitor on Tuesday to come and deliver fun boot camp taster sessions. We all enjoyed playing lots of fun games and even took part in the bleep test to see how fit we were. Some of the P1 boys and girls got up to Level 11!! Wow. Mrs McAulay was so proud. In PE with Mrs McAulay we were developing a range of different skills and worked our way around the stations to practise.

In HWB we have been learning all about having  Growth Mindset. This means that we attack challenges with enthusiasm and make sure we keep telling ourselves that ‘we can do it’. We read a story called ‘My Fantastic Elastic Brain’ and it showed us how we can make our brain stronger when we learn new things and develop new skills. Did you know you can stretch and grow your own brain? Or that making mistakes is one of the best ways your brain learns? Just like how lifting weights helps your muscles get stronger, trying new things without giving up-like finding the courage to put your face in the water the first time you’re at a pool-strengthens your brain.

We talked about Neurons in our brains acting as little messengers and how they get thicker and stronger when we learn new things. So we made a collage of our brain…..we used string to represent the weak neurons and things we cannot do (………..yet!), we used thicker straws to show things that we are learning at the moment and we used strong pipe cleaners to represent things that we are really good at and feel confident at doing (because we have practised them lots).  We each came up with examples of each. These will be sent home today so you can discuss them with your child to reinforce the important message.

A big well done to CH for filling his values sheet. He got to add his name to the Springfield Hall of Fame and we are very proud of him.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Christmas Cheer in P1B

Our final week before Christmas!! The children in Primary 1 have all worked SO hard this term and I could not be more proud of them. The Nativity was incredible and thank you to all the parents and carers who came a long and supported us all. They really did sing their little hearts out.

This week we have been trying to keep some routine and structure so we did our daily Phonics lessons, consolidating our new sounds x, y and z. We have also had a big push on spelling our common words. We did some Christmas phonics reading and writing activities. We also did some AMAZING writing! We were doing our ‘Trapped in a Snowglobe’ mini project and had to use our imagination to describe what we would see if we were inside. Some of the language we were using really blew me away…….

“Glittering snow”

“Cosy house”

“Deep, crunchy snow”

“big, bare trees”

I could really see this week just how much progress all of the children have made with all of them writing 2 sentences and with support, using capital letters, fingers spaces and full stops. They used their fingers to sound out words and demonstrated a very positive attitude towards their writing.

We then used chalk to create our snow scene and learnt how to blend chalk with our finger. We used our facial expressions and body language to pretend we were scared because we were trapped. The children’s work will be displayed outside our classroom for all to see!

We have also been busy making Christmas cards for our special families. We chose the design we wanted to do and used finger painting to create our picture.

On Thursday we had fun making melting snowmen biscuits and enjoyed getting messy with the icing!

Thank you all so much for your support and kindness this term. I am so grateful and love working with all of the fabulous Primary 1 parents. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy making special memories together! Thank you all so, so much for the generous gifts that have been brought in this week. I am really overwhelmed by your kindness and I feel very lucky!

Be safe and see you all in January!

Fireworks Fun in P1B

This week we were learning all about the ‘l’ and ‘c’ sounds. We were printing with the Lego bricks, building letters with the Lego, making letters with the leaves, making caterpillar patterns, using cotton wool to make clouds for C and using the cars to trace our letter shapes. We also had a go at some caption writing on whiteboards. Mrs McAulay put a picture on the board and we had to think of a sentence we could write about it. We then had to practise using our finger spaces and phoneme fingers to sound out and write out little sentence.

In  Numeracy we continued our work on addition. We were learning all of the addition facts for 2, 3, 4 and 5…….. finding all of the different ways to make these numbers. We used 2 plates to split objects and also used the Numicon to visually see which numbers add together to give us these answers.

In HWB this week we were celebrating World Kindness Day. We talked all about our value of kindness and came up with ideas of things we could do in school and at home to show kindness to others. Mrs McAulay is keeping her eyes peeled to see if we are doing any of them. In PE we continued to develop our ball skills and learnt how to work co-operatively with a partner. We used different parts of our bodies to move the ball and practised throwing and catching at the end.

This week we also started our Nativity rehearsals. We have been working with Primary 2 to learn some of our songs but it is all top secret at the moment!!

Reminders:

  • Christmas lunch and Pantomime letters back to school asap

Hoping you all have a lovely weekend!

P1b Hall of Fame

Mrs McAulay was very proud of her class this week as we won the peg challenge and also had 3 children add their names to the Springfield Hall of Fame! They have completed all of their values challenges and have been showing our values outside of school which is so nice to hear! Well done!! If you are close to filling yours, keep working hard and you can join them on our special wall.

AW also had an achievement this week as he won the Enjoyaball trophy. A big well done to him and for having the confidence to share this with the class.

Happy Halloween

We have had an exciting week this week with the Halloween Disco and our special Halloween day.   In Phonics we have been learning the ‘b’ and ‘u’ sounds and in Numeracy we have worked on addition. We learnt all about the symbols we use in sums eg. +  and =.

On Tuesday afternoon we were very excited as we got to dress up in our fabulous costumes and went to the hall with the rest of the infant department for our party. We danced, played games and enjoyed our snacks too. A huge thank you to the PTA for organising this for us.

On Wednesday we had a Halloween day and all of our activities had a spooky theme. We had green slime to write in, we made potions, we wrote spells and we read spooky stories. In PE we were moving around the hall like zombies, witches and monsters. We were working with a partner on our ball skills and practised rolling the ball accurately.

Reminders:

  • The Primary 3 classes are organising the shoebox appeal this year so if anyone has any small donations to put in the boxes or a finished box to help them please send them in next week.
  • Next week is a revision week for phonics so please practise the sounds we have learnt. No new sounds will be sent home. We will also be learning about vowels.

Hoping you all have a lovely weekend!

Awesome Autumn

A big welcome back to everyone this week. We are all feeling refreshed after the holidays and ready for an exciting term ahead.

In Literacy this week we were learning the ‘g’ and ‘f’ sounds. We have continued to practise our word building and next week we are going to start learning some tricky words.

In Numeracy we were introduced to the concept of addition. We were combining 2 sets and counting how many altogether. We did lots of practical activities to consolidate this. We counted fir cones, pasta, cubes, rocks and even children!

The next 2 weeks we will be doing some Outdoor Learning and looking at seasonal changes. We talked a lot about changes that we see in Autumn and went on an Autumn scavenger hunt. We then looked at hibernating animals. We collected some leaves and made hedgehogs collages. Here we are pretending to hibernate like some of the animals we learnt about.

A few points to remember:

  • Next Tuesday is our Halloween Disco so children can bring their costumes to school.
  • Children can buy a poppy in school for Remembrance Day if they wish
  • P1 Dental inspections next week
  • Please put names on all hats, gloves, scarves etc…. as it is getting colder and we do not want items getting lost
  • 3 Tricky words will be sent out each week in sound bags.
  • New reading books to be sent out on Monday

Have a lovely weekend

The 3 little pigs park in Primary 1

This week we had a revision week! We were practising all of the sounds we have learnt so far and doing lots of word building with these sounds. We played an initial sound game and had a box full of different items. When the music stopped, we had to pull out an object and identify the initial sound. We worked in pairs to play with the phonics dice and jigsaws. We played a memory game to match up our sounds and did lots of sensory activities to practise forming out letters. We had a graffiti wall this week and loved using all of the pens to try some writing. We also played teachers and had to use the phonics fans to test our friend. Some of the children have started to learn how to write short phrases. We learnt how to use finger spaces between our words and how to sit our letters on the line.

In Numeracy we were developing lots of different skills with our numbers to 10 and then 20. We were counting backwards, sequencing and ordering.  We played lots of games to recognise our numbers to 20. We had to deliver the letters to the correct doors and played number bingo. On Wednesday we had an introduction to 3D shape and started to learn some of the names of the different shapes. We learnt the difference between 2D and 3D shapes and did lots of sorting activities.

In PE this week we decided to have some time to relax as we are all feeling very tired! We did some cosmic yoga to the story of the hungry caterpillar. We talked about how important it is to stretch our muscles and how we can use this to keep calm.

In HWB we read a story called ‘Hands are not for Hitting’. We talked about the message in the story and linked this to our school values. Mrs McAulay gave us lots of different scenarios and we had to come up with ideas of what we could do instead of using unkind hands. We then drew around our hands and came up with lots of ideas of how our hands can help us in a positive way!

Our tuff tray this week was the story of the 3 little pigs. We had some puppets and story stones to retell the story. We also had a challenge to build a house for the pigs. We had some straw, bricks and sticks. We talked about how the bricks are stronger and more sturdy.

Thank you to Mrs Philpot for helping us paint our Fairyland castle. We are hoping to have this up for the dragon next week.

Hoping you all have a lovely weekend.
