Fantastic Mr Fox (P2B)

This week we finished reading our class novel, ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’. To celebrate our reading and use our knowledge of the story, we created ‘Wanted’ posters for Mr Fox. The farmers were getting tired of losing their chickens and geese! We used adjectives to create a description of Mr Fox and we drew a picture to help the reader. Some of us have been making our own Wanted posters during play.

During our writing lesson last week, we retold the story of ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. We drew pictures of the beginning, middle and end to help us to order the events in the story. Afterwards, we wrote sentences to match our pictures and we made sure that we put the main points in the correct order.

This week we have been learning the sounds ‘br’ and ‘cr’. We have also been revising ‘au’ and ‘aw’. To learn our new sounds, we have been word building, playing games on our Promethean board, finding ‘br’ words in a word search and writing sentences.

Last week in Numeracy and Mathematics, we learned to count on in ones to 100. Some of us were also learning to count to 1000. This week, we have been learning about place value and we have been talking about the digits that make up a number. We have been using money and cubes to count in tens and ones/units and we have been ‘breaking up’ numbers. For example, we have been learning that 95 is the same as 90 and 5.

This week we have been exploring a beach environment and it’s habitats. On Tuesday afternoon, we looked at coastal birds and we watched short videos about oystercatchers, puffins, guillemots and curlews. We learned some facts about each bird and we drew pictures of them on our beach habitats fact sheet. On Thursday afternoon, we looked at marine mammals. Next we will be learning about seashore minibeasts and underwater plants.

On Thursday afternoon, our P6 pals came to visit. We read our reading books with them during paired reading. Some of us even went to the P6 classroom! We enjoyed spending time with our P6 pals.

The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch (P2B)

This week we started our Geography trail, ‘From Front Door to Seashore’. Miss Harrison read us a story called ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ and we talked about what we would like to learn about the seashore. During play this week, some of us have made our own lighthouse pictures and pictures of the story and we have also changed our tuff tray into a rock pool!

In writing this week, we learned to write instructions. We made our own instructions for disgusting sandwiches to scare off the seagulls in The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. First, we used bullet points to list our ingredients. Miss Harrison felt a bit ill as we had sandwiches containing eyeballs, slime, slugs, hot chilli sauce and nails! On Wednesday, we used our list of ingredients to write our instructions. We used numbers to order our steps and bossy verbs such as ‘spread’, ‘add’, ‘put’ and ‘gather’. Miss Harrison was very impressed with our instructions.

As well as writing this week, some of us learned the sounds ‘ng’ and ‘nk’ and some of us revised the sounds ‘ou’ and ‘ow’. We practised forming our sounds in our handwriting books, we used the magnetic boards to build words and we wrote sentences using words containing these sounds. In reading, we looked for our common words and Miss Harrison asked us some true or false questions about our reading books.

In Numeracy and Mathematics, we continued to work on our numbers to 100. We revised finding numbers before, after and between and then we learned to find numbers 1 or 2 more or less than. We played different games on the Promethean board and we practised finding numbers between and more/less than in our workbooks.

On Tuesday afternoon, Miss Harrison was a little bit silly as she started talking about Christmas! Each class were given Christmas card templates from the PTA and we designed our own Christmas cards. We drew fantastic Christmas pictures and we were able to add detail to our images.

This week we also had a visit from the P7 Digital Leaders. They helped us to log into the laptops and then we signed into our own Sumdog accounts to practise our maths skills.

Reading and Numbers to 100 (P2B)

In Literacy this week we have been revising more vowel digraphs. We made ‘oa’ and ‘ow’ words on our magnetic boards and wrote sentences containing ‘oo’ and ‘ew’ words. On Wednesday, Miss Harrison had a holiday and we became the teachers! We worked with a partner and gave them ‘oi’ and ‘oy’ words to make on their magnetic board. We had to help our partners and check that their spelling was correct by reading their words.

This week we also got our first reading book in P2. We were learning to use our knowledge of phonics and common words to read aloud. We spotted some of our vowel digraphs in our reading books!

In Numeracy and Mathematics, we continued to explore symmetry. We learned to complete a symmetrical shape when we could see half of it and we created our own symmetrical designs. Some of us also made our own symmetrical butterflies, created symmetrical pictures with our natural resources and made symmetrical patterns on our peg boards.

This week we also started working with numbers to 100. We learned to sequence numbers to 100 and then to find numbers after, before and between.

In PE this week, we played some warm up games and then we rotated round different stations. We were working on skipping, throwing and catching, running and dribbling.

On Thursday afternoon, we had paired reading with our P6 pals. They came down to our classroom and read us our new P2 reading books. Next week our P6 pals are going to help us with using the laptops.

Phonics, Symmetry and Charles Rennie Mackintosh (P2B)

We have had a busy first full week in P2B!

In Literacy, we have been revising the vowel digraphs ‘ai’, ‘ay’, ‘ee’, ‘ea’, ‘igh’ and ‘-y’. We wrote sentences containing ‘ai’ and ‘ay’ words, used our ‘ee’ digraph to spell words and used our magnetic boards and letters to build ‘igh’ and ‘-y’ words. Next week we will continue to revise more vowel digraphs.

In Numeracy and Mathematics, we have been learning about symmetry. Miss Harrison explained to us that a picture or shape is symmetrical when both sides match. We played a symmetry sorting game on our Promethean board and then we looked for lines of symmetry in different pictures.

This week we were given a special job from Mr Wells. He asked us to help make our school beautiful by helping with some of the displays. For our whole school Expressive Arts display, we created pictures using 2D shapes. We also learned about hot and cold colours and used these to add detail to our pictures.

In our infant area, our theme is ‘Building and Construction’ so we learned about a Scottish architect called ‘Charles Rennie Mackintosh’. We looked at some of the buildings that he designed and talked about the shapes and lines that we could see. Afterwards we created our own pictures in a similar style to Charles Rennie Mackintosh. We also learned that he made furniture so some of us created our own tables and chairs.

This week we had PE with Mrs Reid and with Miss Harrison on Tuesday afternoon. We played some warm-up games and then we looked at object control. We worked with a partner to practise our throwing, catching and kicking skills. Over the next few weeks we will continue to develop our movement skills.

On Monday the SPCA were in our school. For part of the day, they gave us two rabbits to look after. We listened to a story about two children who wanted pet rabbits and then we learned how to look after rabbits. We were fantastic vets and looked after the rabbits extremely well.

Welcome to P2B!

Welcome to P2B’s first blog post!

We have had a busy first few days in P2B. This week we have been exploring our school values and putting them into action! Miss Harrison has been giving us lots of dojo’s when we have been kind to others and when we have been respecting our new resources and classroom. She has been so impressed at how quickly we have settled into P2 and we are already confident with our new routines.

On Thursday, we learned about children’s rights. We looked at some of the rights and discussed how we could make sure that we had each of these rights in school. For example, we learned that we have the right to be healthy so we are going to make sure that we take part in lots of PE, drink water and milk and eat healthy food. We created a class charter in our classroom so that we (and Miss Harrison) remember these rights throughout P2. We made ourselves as Lego people to display on our class charter.

On Thursday afternoon our P6 pals came to visit. We enjoyed playing with our P6 pals and catching up with them after the summer.

In Literacy this week we started our first class novel, ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’. Miss Harrison read us the first couple of chapters and then we talked about the main characters and what happened in the story. On Friday we became illustrators and drew a picture of what happened in the story, using describing words from the text to help us.

This week we also had Mrs Begarnie on Wednesday afternoon. We will have Mrs Begarnie for Science each Wednesday afternoon as well as Mrs Reid for PE. On Thursday morning we also had Mrs Bain for music. We will continue to have music each Thursday morning with Mrs Bain.

Our last two weeks in P3A

We have had a busy last couple of weeks in P3A!

In Numeracy and Mathematics we finished our work on division and we learned to find halves and quarters of shapes and numbers. We also learned how to find three quarters of a set. To help us with finding fractions of numbers, we used our division facts.  For example, if we were finding one quarter of 32, then we divided 32 by 4, using our knowledge of the 4 times-table. Some of us were also learning to find thirds, fifths and tenths of a set and we also learned to find equivalent fractions. We have worked so hard with our Numeracy and Mathematics this year and we have all made good progress.

In Literacy, we looked at writing an ending for our imaginative stories. We watched a video about writing interesting endings and then we looked at using a happy ending, a cliff-hanger ending and a twist ending. On our notes page, we created three different endings for our own stories. On Tuesday this week, we used our notes pages and selected which ending we were going to pick for our stories; a happy ending, a cliff-hanger ending or a twist ending. We had to ensure that our endings made sense and that we brought our events to a conclusion.

In Art and Design, we explored Pop Art. We looked at the use of bright colours and repeated patterns and then we created our own images in a similar style. After discussing our highlights of Primary Three, we used the outline of an image to represent one of our highlights. Then we used bright colours and repeated patterns to add detail and effects to our images.

On Wednesday this week we had an Inflatable Fun Day! We played different fairground games, went on several bouncy castles and inflatables and had snacks and drinks. We really enjoyed our afternoon of fun in the sunshine!

On Thursday morning, we attended the end of term awards assembly. One of the awards presented at the assembly was the Phair Medal. This award is in recognition of our school’s first secretary, Mrs Phair. It is awarded for a hard-working pupil who displays an excellent attitude towards learning and is a positive role model. A huge well done to OH who was awarded the Phair Medal!

On Thursday afternoon this week we had a class party! Miss Harrison wanted to throw us a party to celebrate all of our hard work, learning and achievements this year. We had lots of party food, played party games and enjoyed spending time with our friends.

Book Festival and Sports Day (P3A)

We have had a busy and varied week in P3A! Here we are all set for Sports Day…

On Monday we went to the Linlithgow Book Festival. We met an author called Colin Drysdale who has written a book called ‘Scotland’s Castles’. He told us some facts about castles and then we went outside the marquee to fire water balloons from a trebuchet!

In Numeracy this week we have been revising dividing by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10. Some of us were also solving division problems and some of us were dividing with remainders. Next week we will finish division and complete our work with fractions.

In Literacy we have been learning to write the middle part of a story. We listened to ‘The Ice Robbery’ and we identified the problem and the solution in the story. We looked at our own story beginnings and reminded ourselves of our characters and setting. Afterwards, we created a problem for our characters and decided how it would be fixed and made notes on our middle part of our stories. On Thursday, we used our notes to continue our own stories. We had to ensure that we continued our stories in a way that made sense.

This week we explored what a healthy diet looks like. We looked at the importance of drinking water, exercise, sleep and keeping a happy and positive attitude. We also revised the main food groups on The Eatwell Guide. Afterwards we worked in groups to create PowerPoints on healthy living.

On Wednesday this week we had our Sports Day. In the morning we went round different potted sports activities such as bean bag throw, egg and spoon race, tennis, rugby ball passing, running, javelin throw, cheerleading and space hoppers.  In the afternoon we had different races. We really enjoyed it and it was lots of fun!

Division, Mapping and Budding Authors (P3A)

This week we have been learning to divide by 4 and 5. We have played lots of division games to improve our recall of our division facts and we have learned how to solve missing number sums such as ? ÷ 5 = 6. Some of us have been learning to divide with remainders. We have been using concrete materials to help us with our dividing. We have also been linking our multiplication and division facts and revising dividing whole numbers by 2-10.

In Mathematics, we learned to use Venn diagrams. We played an exciting game called ‘The Great Escape’ on Education City and then we sorted numbers into the correct parts on the Venn diagram. We then created our own Venn diagrams using a list of numbers.

This week we have turned into amazing authors! Over the next few weeks, we are going to be learning to write an imaginative story. On Tuesday we started to look at writing a story beginning.  We looked at interesting story openers and then we looked at different techniques that writers can use to begin a story such as a character description, setting description, dialogue, question or statement. Afterwards we created our own interesting first sentences and made notes on our characters and setting. On Wednesday we used our notes to write the beginning of our own imaginative stories.

In Literacy this week we also learned how to use a thesaurus. We watched a cartoon about using a thesaurus and then we learned how to use a thesaurus to find words correctly. Afterwards we played a synonyms board game, sorted cards into groups with similar meanings, used an online thesaurus to find interesting words and used a thesaurus to find four synonyms for different words. When writing our own stories, we were able to use a thesaurus to vary our use of vocabulary.

In French, we revised days of the week. We listened to a song about days of the week in French, watched an episode on High Five French and then we looked for the words for days of the week in French on a word search. We have asked Miss Harrison if we can learn words and phrases for animals so this will be our next French lesson!

As part of our Local Area study, we learned to use symbols on maps. We looked at a map of Legoland and discussed how we could use the map to find out information and looked at the different symbols. Afterwards we explored how to use a key and symbols on a map. Then we worked in groups to create a key and then used our symbols to annotate a map of our school.

Paragraphs, Poetry and Places of Interest (P3A)

In Numeracy this week we have been learning to divide by 3. We have been using our multiplication facts for the 3 times-table to help us with our division. Some of us have also been learning to divide by 2, 4, 5 and 10 and some of us have been learning to divide by 6 and 8.

In Mathematics, we have been learning to answer questions to get information from different charts and tables. We were able to collect data using tally marks in a frequency table and then answer questions about the data. We also looked at bar graphs and compared data.

In Literacy we have been revising using paragraphs. We looked at a non-fiction text about frogs and in pairs, highlighted where each new paragraph should be. Afterwards, we worked with a partner to create a poster explaining how and when to use paragraphs. We included information such as using paragraphs to group ideas, to make texts easier to read and organise text. Our paragraph posters will be displayed at our writing area to help people to use paragraphs in their writing.

During writing this week we looked at poetry. We looked at features of acrostic poems and then we came up with lots of words and phrases associated with litter. Afterwards we used these words and phrases to create each line in our acrostic poem ‘Do Not Litter’. On Wednesday we created ‘Presentation Perfect’ final drafts of our poems and illustrated our ideas.

Before the rain came on Wednesday, we went outside to play team games for PE. We were able to follow rules and adopt different roles. On Thursday afternoon, we continued our Fitness sessions. We worked positively with others to use equipment safely and we worked on improving our own levels of fitness.

In Art this week we explored using charcoal to create line, shapes and shading in pictures. We looked at two buildings in our local area, the Burgh Halls and St. Michael’s Church. We discussed the shapes and the lines that we could see in the buildings and then we observed and sketched the buildings using our charcoal. Afterwards we added shading. We were very pleased with our images!

Mind maps, Litter and Capacity (P3A)

In Numeracy this week we have been revising our multiplication facts for the 3, 4 and 5 times-tables, multiplying multiples of 10 and multiplying a 2-digit number by 2, 3 and 4. Some of us have also been dividing by 3, multiplying by 7 and revising all of our multiplication facts and strategies. Next week we will start work on division.

This week we looked at recording measurements of capacity using litres and millilitres. We worked in groups and rotating round different measuring activities. We played a game called ‘Drip and Drag’ on the laptops, practised reading scales and estimated and measured the capacity of different containers.

In Literacy we looked at illustrating part of a story that we enjoyed. We looked at the role of an illustrator and then we drew a scene or part of a story that we enjoyed, using either our class novel or a reading book from home. Once we had finished our pictures, we described what was happening in our pictures and why we chose to draw that part of the story.

This week we also looked at mind-mapping. We explored and discussed examples of mind maps and then we worked in pairs to create a mind map to highlight our ideas for our litter campaign. On Wednesday, we reviewed our mind maps and made an action plan with the help of Miss Harrison. After we had decided what needs to be done, we worked in pairs to make persuasive posters for our litter campaign. Over the next few weeks we will be encouraging others to care for their environment.

In Health this week, we learned how to use medicines safely. We listened to a story called ‘How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon?’ and we discussed times where we felt unwell and how we got better. Miss Harrison spoke to us about keeping safe around medicines and then we looked at ‘What Should I Do If’ scenario cards in groups. Using what we had learned, we worked in pairs to write down three golden rules for keeping safe around medicines.
