Trains, patterns and alphabetical order! (P1A)

Did you know that we have now covered all of our initial sounds? 🙂 Last week, we looked at the sounds ‘x’ and ‘qu’. We enjoyed playing snap with different CVC words, making a rainbow ‘x’ and ‘qu’, creating our own treasure maps and writing our own sentences using our common words and new sounds.

This week, we have continued our work on numbers to 20. We can find larger and smaller numbers in a pair, the largest or smallest number in a set and we can order numbers to 20. Next week we will be learning about odd and even numbers.

As we have now finished our Outdoor Learning focus on winter, we started our new Scottish focus on Famous Scots. We are looking at James Watt who helped to make the steam engine. Ruaridh and Charlie told the P1-3 classes at assembly what we know about James Watt. Did you know that he was from Greenock and he was born almost 300 years ago?

Finally, we used the 2D shapes we learned in maths to print and create our own steam trains.

Today, we went to the Scots Assembly. We shared what we have been learning in class with P1-3 and listened to P6 singing different Scots songs and reciting poetry. They were fantastic! As always, we were a great audience!

Snowflakes, sounds and shapes in P1A!

Happy New Year to you all!

We have been working very hard since coming back to school after the Christmas holidays.

This week, we learned two new sounds, ‘y’ and ‘z’. We were able to make CVC words containing these sounds and we even managed to make  the word ‘zebra’ on our magnetic boards! Miss Harrison was very impressed! We are also getting really good at writing sentences and we can use finger spaces and full stops. When we were reading, we were trying to look for our common words in our books.

In numeracy, we have been learning about numbers to 20 and 3D shapes. We can count from zero to twenty and twenty to zero and can find numbers after. On Thursday, we started to look at 3D shapes. Miss Harrison brought in a big bag of everyday objects and we sorted them into groups. The shapes we were learning about were cylinders, spheres, cones, cuboids and cubes. Here are some photos of us enjoying our 3D shape learning activities:

On Tuesday, we had a visit from the RSPB. Laura and Sarah were very impressed with our general knowledge! We went outside to discover wildlife in our school grounds. In groups, we went into our outdoor classroom and looked for different wildlife or evidence that certain animals or insects had been in our playground.

Continuing our outdoor learning theme, we also looked at signs of winter. Miss Harrison wanted to take down our Fairyland castle and put up a winter display but we came up with the idea of changing our Fairyland castle into a Winter castle (Miss Harrison agreed that this was an excellent idea)! We worked in pairs to make icicles and snowflakes and we are currently working on a snowman. On Friday, we made fantastic snowflake pictures using oil pastels and paint. Our classroom display is looking amazing!

Festive fun in P1A!

What a busy couple of weeks we have had in P1A!

Last week, we performed our nativity, ‘The Innkeeper’s Breakfast’ to our friends and family. Some of us were a little nervous but we tried our best and Miss Harrison was very proud of us. Sammy thought that our nativity was great!

One afternoon we watched The Snowman and looked at the shapes and colours of all the different snowmen. We created our own snowmen using crayons, chalk and oil pastels.

This week, we have been looking at the story ‘The Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson. We listened to the story and identified some of the rhyming words and we also discussed how the Stick family might be feeling when he went missing. Miss Harrison put us into groups and we completed different activities relating to the story.

We created postcards from the Stick Man to send back to his family about all the adventures he was having:

A busy start to December in P1A!

We can’t quite believe that it’s December and that Christmas is on it’s way!

We have been working very hard this week to make our salt dough Christmas trees for the Christmas Fair. Mrs Rae (our Parent Helper) helped us to make our trees and then we painted the baubles in class. Miss Harrison put on the red ribbon and we wrote our names on the trees using a special pen! Thank you to everyone that bought our trees!

It was lovely to invite guests into our classroom for the Family Learning Growth Mindset afternoon. We listened to a story called ‘The Most Magnificent Thing’ about a girl who kept on trying and didn’t give up and then we took part in different challenges. Some were quite tricky but we worked hard and kept on trying like the girl in the story.

This week, we have been using all the sounds we have learned so far to make words. We have also been revising all of our common words. In numeracy, we have been learning different addition facts and looking at doubles and near doubles to 10.

We look forward to performing our nativity, ‘The Innkeeper’s Breakfast’ next week.

Have a lovely weekend,

P1A 🙂

Flumflum trees, singing and fun in P1A!

This week we have been learning the sounds ‘g’ and ‘l’. We have been practising how to write our sounds and we have been making words.

We have working really hard with learning our songs for our nativity, ‘The Innkeeper’s Breakfast’. Campbell’s favourite nativity song is ‘Oh, what a lovely breakfast!’

On Friday, we got five minute’s extra play time for our excellent behaviour when walking around the school. Miss Harrison was very proud of us!

We hope you all have a lovely weekend,

P1A 🙂

P1A are reading!

This week we have been learning addition facts for 2, 3, 4 and 5. We looked at all the different ways to make these numbers.

Our new sounds this week were ‘c’, ‘k’ and ‘ck’. We used these sounds, along with the other sounds we already know, to spell and read lots of words. This week, we all had reading books with words! We have been working really hard with our reading & have been practising our common words.

Our first week back in P1A!

What a busy first week back in P1A!

This week, we have been using the sounds we know to build words. When we were writing about autumn, we tried very hard to spell words using the letter patterns we have been taught.

et-cvc-words ny-zc-cvc-words so-cl-cvc-words

In numeracy, we have been learning to add numbers to 10. Nico says that 4 + 4 is 8. Zara would like to tell you that 5 + 5 is 10 and Sophia knows that 10 and 10 makes 20. We will continue our work with addition next week.

This week, we have been learning outdoors. On Wednesday, we were nature detectives and went on the hunt to look for signs of autumn. We found blackberries, conkers, pine cones, mushrooms and piles of leaves! Later that day, we made some autumn pictures.

On Friday, we learned some basic French words with our P7 buddies. We also had our first official trip to the school library and we all have a library book to take home.

We hope everyone has a lovely weekend. See you next week,

P1A 🙂

Class of the Week for P1A!

What a busy week we have had in P1A!

On Monday, we had gym. We were practising different movement skills such as jumping, throwing, catching, skipping and balancing. Look how smart we look in our gym kits!

Our sounds this week were ‘r’ and ‘m’. We have been learning to read, say and write our sounds. Some of us got covered in flour when Miss Harrison let us write ‘m’ in the flour trays! Next week our sounds will be ‘d’ and ‘e’.

In numeracy, we have been learning about tally marks and pictograms. We played a game on Education City and then we made our own pictograms. Some of the buddies came to see us on Wednesday and we played games using tally marks.

This week, we have been looking at the fairytale, ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We listened very carefully to the story and we were able to answer questions about it. On Wednesday, we made fantastic puppets. We worked well in our groups and made sure that everyone had a part to play. On Thursday, we retold the story using our puppets and put on a spectacular puppet show! Miss Harrison was very proud of us!

P1A’s Fairyland Castle!

P1A have been learning all about Fairytales and are helping the friendly dragon to rebuild Fairyland. We used lots of paint and sponges to make bricks for our castle and we got a little messy! Today we added some flags and windows. We think that the dragon will love our castle!
