This week we have been learning to identify, say and write capital letters. We also looked at when we need to use a capital letter. Some of our learning activities included painting capital letters, tracing capital letters, rainbow writing, writing capital letters on our whiteboards, playing games on the smartboard and computer and matching uppercase and lowercase letters with the magnetic boards.

For writing this week, we looked at writing instructions. We made our own instructions for washing our hands. We were able to use short sentences in our instructions and organise and order our ideas.

In numeracy and maths this week, we were learning subtraction facts to 10 and finding ‘how many more’ by subtracting. We also continued to link our addition and subtraction facts. On Thursday, we were learning to compare and describe weights. We sorted objects depending on whether they were heavy or light and compared them according to their weight. We also used cubes to weigh different objects. Ruaridh’s shoe weighed 71 cubes!

This week we started our new learning focus ‘Our Local Community’. We listened to a story called ‘The Chimpanzees of Happy Town’ and discussed features of a town. We had lots of super ideas such as doctors, schools, parks, vets, police/fire stations, houses, hotels, churches, paths and roads, banks, universities, cafes, shops, cinemas and swimming pools! ‘People Who Help Us’ will be part of our local study so we decided to turn our transport museum into a police station! It has already been very popular and we have enjoyed taking on different roles! As part of our new learning focus, Mr Fluff has been leaving school to go on some adventures. This week he has had lots of fun with Chloe and Abhinav. We will all get a turn to take Mr Fluff home with us over the next few weeks.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

This week, we learned two new sounds, ‘ou’ and ‘ow’. When learning the ‘ou’ sound, we played bingo with different ‘ou’ words and pictures, played ‘ou’ games on the computer, looked for ‘ou’ words in a word search and practised reading and writing the ‘ou’ sound and words containing ‘ou’. We also worked with a partner to write different ‘ou’ words on our whiteboards.

When learning the ‘ow’ sound, we made different ‘ow’ words with jewels, pebbles, Lego and small world people, worked with a partner to highlight ‘ow’ words in a text, drew pictures with the ‘ow’ sound in and practised writing ‘ow’ words and we used these in sentences. Our three new common words were ‘made’, ‘make’ and ‘like’.

This week we have been learning subtraction facts for 6-10. We have been playing dice games to practise our subtraction facts, playing Subtraction Bowling and Subtraction Smash, working with a partner to create and solve subtraction sums and we have been playing subtraction games on Education City.

On Thursday, we were learning to use non-standard units to measure length and height. We used our hands and feet to find objects which were longer/shorter than these body parts and then we used paper clips, cubes and counters to estimate and then measure the length and height of different objects.

On Monday afternoon some nursery children came to visit to see what it’s like in P1! Miss Harrison read us all a story and then we helped to look after the nursery children whilst they were playing. We were super buddies to the nursery children and made them feel very welcome.

On Friday morning, the buddies came to see us and help us learn on the laptops. They helped us to log on to the computers using a password, identify the Google Chrome icon and they supported us with using key words to find information on the internet.

The rest of our week was taken up with preparing and practising for our class assembly! On Friday we had lots of mums, dads, family and friends into school to present our assembly. We did an absolutely amazing job and we enjoyed sharing our learning, achievements and memories of P1 with everyone.  Miss Harrison was extremely proud of us and felt very emotional! We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped us to prepare for our assembly and to all the mums, dads, family and friends for coming along this morning to see our assembly.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

Even though it’s been a short week, we have been very busy in P1A! This week we were revising the ‘ew’ sound and learning new common words. We have been looking for common words in our reading books, using common words in sentences, unscrambling sentences, writing common words on graffiti walls and playing games with our common words on the laptops. Next week we will be learning two new sounds (‘ou’ and ‘ow’) and three new common words (‘made’, ‘like’ and ‘make’).

During Number Talks, we have been looking at dot images and ten frames. We are really good at talking about our strategies and at using the Number Talks hand signals. This week we have also been learning subtraction facts for 6 and linking addition and subtraction facts for doubles to 10. On Wednesday, we used our play chalk to write subtraction facts for 6 in the playground. Next week we will be learning subtraction facts for 6-10.

On Wednesday, we started our Internet Safety lessons. We enjoyed watching Hector’s World and meeting all the characters. We learned that some information is precious and unique to each individual. This is called personal information. We discussed that you should only share personal information with adults that you know and trust.

This week we have been working very hard with practising for our assembly. We went into the hall today and had our first practice with the microphones! Miss Harrison said her words far too quickly and quietly so we made sure that we spoke clearly and at a good pace. Miss Harrison was very impressed! Our assembly is next Friday at 10.00am.

Due to technical issues on the blog last week, we were unable to post and we shared our photos of our learning and our trips to Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway and Linlithgow Loch on ClassDojo instead. However, here are a few more photos of our trip to Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway. In our writing lesson, we wrote reports on our school trip using words such as ‘first’, ‘next’, ‘then’ and ‘finally’ to order our ideas. We used capital letters, full stops and finger spaces and most of us were able to use our sounds to write words and sentences. Our trip was a big success and we enjoyed going on the steam train to Manuel, eating our lunch on the train, going through the dark tunnel and visiting the museum. P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

Welcome back! This week we have been consolidating all of our sounds and revising all of our common words. We have been reading non-fiction books and trying to find our common words, identifying pictures to match sounds, writing our own sentences on the whiteboards and playing games on the smartboard with our common words. Next week we will be learning some new sounds and words.

This week, we have been revising all of our subtraction facts to 5 and have started to subtract 1 and 2 from numbers to 10. We have been continuing to use subtraction language such as ‘less than’ and ‘take from’ and we are beginning to link addition and subtraction facts. We worked with a partner to give each other subtraction sums to solve.

 

On Wednesday morning, we found a photograph of Mr Fluff in a space shuttle! He thanked us for helping him to learn all about transport and we talked about what we learned and how transport has changed. We then discussed how people might travel in the future and we enjoyed looking at photos of magnetic levitation trains, driverless cars and supersonic cars. It was then our turn to be inventors and we drew pictures of our own transportation vehicles that could be used in the future! We shared our inventions with the rest of the class.

 

This week, we started our Outdoor Learning Focus on Spring. We discussed signs of spring and using clipboards and a Spring Hunt checklist, went outside to our play areas and outdoor classroom. We found daffodils, insects, flower buds, flowers, birds, blossom, seedlings and nests.

Later that afternoon, we used potatoes to print pictures of tulips and used tissue paper to make flowers. Spring has definitely arrived in P1A!

This week we learned the ‘oo’ sound. We matched ‘oo’ words and pictures, played ‘oo’ games on Education City, looked for ‘oo’ words in a word search and made our own ‘oo’ sentences. We are able to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces in our sentences and can use our sounds to spell words.

  

Our favourite ‘oo’ activity was making and playing with goo!

 

This week, we have been continuing to learn about subtraction facts to 5. We learned that there are different words that you can use for subtraction such as ‘less than’ and ‘take from’ and we are beginning to link our addition and subtraction facts. After the holidays we will be learning subtraction facts to 10.

On Thursday morning, we had our Easter parade. We wore our fantastic Easter bonnets and went along to the hall to show everyone our wonderful creations and to sing ‘Spring Chicken’. A huge thank you to our parents for helping us to make such amazing Easter bonnets and for supporting our Easter parade.

On Thursday afternoon, we continued our Easter celebrations. We went to the Outdoor Classroom and had a huge Easter egg hunt with P1B. Afterwards, we went onto the football pitch to have some egg and spoon races. The wind made it quite tricky as we were using plastic eggs but we still had fun!

We had some special visitors on Thursday. After lunch, we had some nursery children up to visit. Miss Harrison read us all a story and then we showed the nursery children all the activities and resources in our classroom. Miss Harrison was extremely proud of us as we looked after the nursery children very well and we were very kind, helpful and caring.

 

Today we went to St. Michael’s Church for our Easter Service. We were a little tired after the walk there and back but it was a lovely way to end the term. Thank you to our parent helpers who helped us to get there and back safely.

This week, in P1A, we have been learning two new sounds, ‘oa’ and ‘ow’. We have been highlighting ‘oa’ words in stories, using our sounds to write ‘oa’ words, matching ‘oa’ words to pictures and practising how to write the ‘oa’ sound. When learning the ‘ow’ sound, we played bingo (Miss Harrison also enjoyed this activity), drew pictures containing the ‘ow’ sound and made sentences with ‘oa’ and ‘ow’ words.

 

We have been continuing to learn subtraction facts to 10. This week, we learned to take away from 3, 4 and 5 and we even looked at tricky subtraction word problems. We are working very hard with our subtraction facts. This week, we finished learning about analogue and digital o’clock times. We were able to write o’clock times on digital displays.

This week, we started our football block in gym. We were learning to dribble with the football and enjoyed playing Follow the Leader and working in groups to dribble round the cones.

We made fantastic Spring pictures – our art lesson was very messy! We put our hands in yellow and green paint to make our background and then dipped our fingers in blue and orange paint to make the rabbits. Once the paint was dry, we used a pen to add the eyes, nose & whiskers. Some of us need to finish our pictures next week.

Miss Harrison didn’t recognise some of us today! We came to school with crazy hair, red noses, hairbands and dressed down to raise money for Red Nose Day. After break, we went to the bake sale and bought some delicious cakes! It was strange eating a cake in class! Well done to everyone for their fundraising efforts.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

Over the last two weeks, we have been learning to read analogue and digital o’clock times. We have been linking our daily routines to o’clock times and we know that we go for lunch at 12 o’clock!

We have also started to look at subtraction to 10 and have been learning to use different strategies to subtract. Our activities Subtraction Bowling and Subtraction Smash have been very popular! We were excited to use our new subtraction workbooks and we have been working very hard to subtract from numbers to 10.

 

Last week, we learned two new sounds, ‘igh’ and ‘-y’. We looked at how to form these sounds and we were able to write different words featuring these sounds on our whiteboards. Using our sounds to read, we were able to work out which words were nonsense words and which words were real words. We also used magnifying glasses to hunt for ‘igh’ and ‘-y’ words and used ‘igh’ light bulbs and initial sound light bulbs to make words.

This week we have been revising all of our common words. Did you know that we have learned 54 common words so far?! We have been looking for common words in our reading books, have been matching common words, making common words on our magnetic boards, playing common word games in the playground and using our common words to write sentences. No wonder we are tired!

Last week, Mr Fluff went on another adventure! This time he had been on a yacht so we decided to help him learn about water transport. We worked in groups to draw and write all of the types of transport that we knew that went on water and then we looked at a powerpoint on the smartboard to compare our results. We learned about the history of boats and looked at why we use different types of boats today.

Daniel made a fantastic kite at home and brought it in to class to show us!

We have been continuing to develop our movement skills such as throwing, catching, balancing and jumping and we have also enjoyed gym with our PE teacher, Mrs Reid.

Finally, we have a few achievements to share with our readers. Firstly, we won the peg challenge again today! Well done to Carla, Eva and Sophia who won medals at the Linlithgow Gymnastics Show. The girls said that they had to perform a gymnastics routine and practise lots! Well done to Kerr for winning a medal at Enjoy-a-Ball and for achieving his Grade 6 white/purple belt at Tae Kwon Do.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

 

Happy World Book Day! Don’t our costumes look fantastic? We have been celebrating books and reading over the last couple of days. With Mrs Hogg and Mrs Begarnie, we decorated our classroom door. We voted for Hairy Maclary and made a giant tree, painted Hairy Maclary and created our own cat and dog designs. At Friday’s assembly, we found out that we won the decorated door competition! Thank you to Mrs Hogg and Mrs Begarnie for helping us to make such a wonderful entrance to our classroom.

This week, we also read lots of books and shared books that we brought in from home with our partners. Some of us also told the class about our books too! We took part in different reading competitions, made book marks and we went to Miss Mudd’s classroom to hear a story there!

Over the last two weeks, we have learned the ‘ai’, ‘ay’, ‘ee’ and ‘ea’ sounds. Today, we impressed Miss Harrison by teaching her about the ‘ee’ and ‘ea’ sounds and we told her how to spell different words containing these sounds!

                

In numeracy, we have been learning about ordinal numbers, number names to 20 and money. We have been learning to add coins to make different totals and have been comparing prices. When learning about ordinal numbers, we made paper aeroplanes and raced them in groups to award first, second and third.

 

We have been continuing to learn about old and new transport. Last Monday, Daniel’s mummy brought in a toy steam car to show us.

 

We continued to look at the different ways that humans have tried to fly throughout history and explored early flight attempts. Using different materials, we made our own hot air balloons. Thomas made a fantastic rocket at home and brought it in to show the class.

   

Last Wednesday, we arrived at school to find that Mr Fluff had been on ANOTHER adventure! This time he had been in a car. We helped him to learn about how cars have changed since they were invented and for writing, we made our own cars and described what they would look like! Some of our cars had wings, could go under water and even smelt of cream cakes and chocolate! We have enjoyed being car mechanics and playing in our Transport Museum.

  

 

In gym, we have been playing different parachute games. Miss Harrison even took part but got stuck under the parachute! Silly Miss Harrison!

Last Friday we had a special visitor in P1A, Sonic the hedgehog. We had to be very quiet as Ruaridh reminded us that hedgehogs are nocturnal so Sonic wasn’t used to being out during the day.

 

This week we won Class of the Week. Miss Baillie told us that we had won because we had been little stars when Miss Harrison was off sick. Miss Harrison was proud of us, as always.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

Even though the last two weeks have been shorter, we have been busy in P1A!

Last week, we started looking at old and new transport and how transport has changed over time. Thomas suggested that we change our role play area into a transport museum and we all thought that was a wonderful idea. We have a ticket office, a cafe, a book shop and photographs of old modes of transport. Charlie and Daniel brought in photographs for our museum. Charlie’s great great grandfather was an inspector on the trams for over 30 years and a drummer in the Glasgow Corporation Transport Pipe Band. Daniel’s uncle built a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car which is displayed in the Glasgow Transport Museum. We have had lots of fun playing in our transport museum.

When we came to school last Wednesday, we got a big surprise! Mr Fluff (our class mascot) was in our transport museum with a photograph! He had been to the transport museum in Glasgow and was in a horse and cart.

We decided to help Mr Fluff and that morning, we started to learn about how transport has changed. The first car looked very different and only had enough space for two people. We were able to sort pictures of transport onto a timeline and put them in order from oldest to newest.

Mr Fluff was on another adventure this week! When we came into school on Thursday, we found him in the transport museum with a photograph of him on an aeroplane! We learned about the different ways that humans have tried to fly throughout history.

Last week, we learned two new sounds by combining letters together. We looked at the ‘th’ and ‘wh’ sounds. This week we have been revising the ‘sh’, ‘ch’, ‘th’ and ‘wh’ sounds. We have been continuing to look at all of our common words to help us with our reading and writing.

In numeracy and maths, we have been learning how to write numbers to 10 in words. Next week, we will be looking at number words to 20. We have also been learning about money. Last week, we looked at coin recognition and we are now learning to add money amounts to 10p.

Today we won the peg challenge again! We always walk quietly in the corridors and we had 18 pegs altogether. Miss Harrison is always very proud of us.

Our week in pictures…

On Monday, we went to gym with Miss Harrison and worked on our balancing, throwing and dribbling skills. We had a lot of fun!

This week we have been learning the sounds ‘sh’ and ‘ch’. We made our own ‘sh’ ships, drew ‘sh’ pictures and we even made our own ‘sh’ sentences!

Have you heard about Mr Odd and Mr Even?! This week, we have been learning about odd and even numbers. We looked for odd and even numbers on our number lines, counted up in even numbers to complete dot to dot puzzles and found odd and even numbers in our work. Using our odd and even numbers we made our own characters, Mr/Mrs Odd and Mr/Mrs Even.

This week we finished learning about patterns using shapes and colours. Miss Harrison read us a story called ‘Dinosaurs love Underpants’ and we created our own patterned underpants! During active play time, some of us have been using our shapes to build castles. Daniel made Hogwarts from Harry Potter. Miss Harrison loves Harry Potter and she was so impressed!

One of the highlights of our week was our Google Expedition workshop. We really enjoyed learning about Under the Sea and looking at the different animals in the ocean. We also got to explore our Solar System! Eva liked seeing all of the different planets and Sammy liked seeing the whale sharks.
