Primary 5 – w/e 7/9/18

This week Primary 5 have had another busy week.

We walked along to the leisure centre and completed our swimming assessment. The children were great and tried really hard for Adam.

In maths, we worked with numbers into millions, adding and subtracting multiples of ten. We played hit the button and other times tables activities to continue to build our speed and accuracy with these. We have set ourselves targets for the term in maths too.

We have started to look at what a refugee may be and how this can happen to people. We will begin a comparison study next week, which will integrate this and give us a basis to compare Scotland and India.

After a practise run last week, we have created hot air balloons for our Growth Mindset display.

We have established the 5 point scale as part of our HWB focus, where the children will have an opportunity to regularly reflect on how they are feeling.

Have a great weekend

Kind regards

Mrs Kerr

Primary 5 Blog – w/b 26th August

This week in Primary 5 we have been learning about the 5 point scale,  to help us understand our own and other peoples feelings.  We also completed our Class Charter, using emojis to show that we agree to keep the class rules.

In Maths  we did a carousel of activities practising our tables and subtraction.  In number talks, we looked at subtraction strategies.

In PE our focus is teamwork. We played a variety of games to help us with this.

In writing we wrote a story based on video clip called ‘Create’.

We also completed some dictionary work.

We read the Dr Seuss story – ‘The Places You’ll Go’ and discussed how having a Growth Mindset will help us in life.

In science with Mrs Tulloch, we created mnemonics – for the planets – ask us if we can remember these.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards,

Primary 5 and Mrs Kerr

Welcome Back Primary 5

It’s been lovely to see the children back in school this week, refreshed and keen to get started.

We’ve had a busy first week, getting to know each other through a variety of activities including bingo and creating jigsaw pieces.

In literacy, we designed our own aliens and  then used a thesaurus to find interesting words to help us describe them.

Numeracy included a treasure hunt and a task to help us identify the areas we need to develop further this session.

We’ve discussed the qualities that make an excellent pupil and teacher and shared these together. We’ve also begun to create our Class Charter, discussing rules and why we have them. We have voted on the theme for our charter, choosing emoji’s for this session.

Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 6B – 2nd Feb 2018

As a new month starts, our learning continues.

This week we have consolidated our learning around negative numbers and the children have completed a pre-topic assessment for money and finance, which we will begin to explore next week.

In literacy, the children have used Scot’s language to rewrite either part of the script from The Lion King or a scene from The Broons. They had great fun using Scot’s Dictionaries to discover some new words. Ask them which new words they have discovered!!

We have also written an imaginative story, with our main focus being the way sentences are started. We have learned that sometimes we need to restructure the sentence in order to open it with an interesting word. Ask your child which sentence openers they used this week!!

We have continued our preparations for The Lion King show, rehearsing and singing.

Have a lovely weekend

Primary 6B – 26th Jan 2018

This week we have looked at the sentence openers we use in our story writing and discovered that we usually use the same words over and over again to start our sentences. We have explored some other words that we could use instead and we are hoping that next week, our sentence openers in our stories will be much more exciting.

In maths we had to use our knowledge of factors, multiples and prime numbers to work out which factor bug had eaten Mrs Kerr’s chocolate!!!

Ask the children who it was and how they worked it out.

As part of our learning for Scot’s week, we have played Scot’s language bingo, recited our Scot’s Poems and explored the lives of The Scottish Colourists.

Primary 6

We had a visit from Mr Hogg and Miss Saigle during science. They spoke to us about renewable energy sources and sustainability.

In maths we have explored rules of divisibility. For example if a number is even it can be divided by 2. Ask your child about the other rules we have explored.

In literacy we have begun to look at the story of Edward Tulane and will follow his journey throughout the term

Our IDL covered the changing states of water and the scientific language associated with this. Again, the children should be able to give you some of the language we discovered.

What a lovely week we have had in Primary 6B.

We finished reading Wonder and were then able to enjoy the film during our trip to Cineworld on Thursday. The children were stars and their behaviour was exemplary. They enjoyed the film and were keen to compare the differences between the two media.

We shared our learning in Science with our Primary 2’s this week, allowing them to play the board games that we made with Mrs Tulloch.

We also now have a fantastic display of our toucans in the style of Henri Rousseau.

The children also enjoyed creating their sock snowmen.

Wishing you all a lovely break and a prosperous New Year.

Primary 6B – Scottish Parliament Outreach Visit

Mrs Miller from the Scottish Parliament Outreach Team, visited us in class this morning.

She shared lots of information about the parliament and allowed us to explore different issues using an interactive voting system.

We had a mock election, with Party Leaders delivering a manifesto.

Well done to the ‘Save the Earth Party’ who won our Election.

We also had a debate, with the mace present. Our Presiding Officer chaired the debate extremely well and the chamber voted that we should not have one hour of PE every day.

Primary 6B – 8th December 2017

This week, Primary 6B have completed comic strips showing the feelings and emotions of Via (a character from our class novel ‘Wonder’). I’m sure you’ll agree that these look great!

As part of our RME, we have been looking at Christmas Traditions. We created our own Christingles and explored the significance of each part as we made them.

Our art this week has involved working with oil pastels and water colours to create toucans. These images show the pupils hard at work on this project.

We are looking forward to our outreach visit next week from the team at the Scottish Parliament – with lots to learn there too!

A fantastic finale to our week. Well done to Primary 6B and their Assembly – All Different, All Equal.

Our assembly showcased our Health and Wellbeing work so far this session and the children’s talents when singing, dancing, acting and presenting.

Many thanks to everyone who came along and supported the children this morning.
