Primary 5 – w/e 23rd November 2018

This week in Primary 5 we have looked at suspense in our story writing. We listened to spooky music and learned that short sentences can help to create suspense in our writing. We all wrote a short paragraph using this technique.

As part of our HWB this week, we explored how germs are spread. We did this using glitter – ask us about some of the facts we learned this week.

In Science, we looked at terminal velocity. Ask us what we learned!!

In grammar this week we explored adverbs and adverbial clauses. These will help to make our writing much more interesting.

In PE we have learned some new games, as well as developing our handball skills further.

In maths we’ve concluded our work on fractions and we can all now find a fraction of a number, identify equivalent fractions and put fractions in order.

We have begun to receive lots of items for our gift bags for the Day Care Centre. Many thanks if you have donated to this. The deadline for sending items into school is Friday 30th November if you would still like to donate.

Kind regards

This week in Primary 5 we have continued to look at fractions. We have explored equivalent fractions, improper fractions and we have compared and ordered fractions too!

In problem solving we looked at ‘Magic Squares’ and learned why they are magic and how to complete the squares. Ask us how we did this!!

We began our Enterprise Topic this week. We are responsible for making up gift bags for the adults who attend Linlithgow Day Care Centre. We have written letters to ask for donations for the gift bags – have you received yours yet?

In PE we have continued to develop our team building skills, through handball. We have developed skills and played mini-games to assist with this.

In Science, we launched our rockets, with the winning rocket being created by Eilidh O, whose rocket travelled an amazing 36m. Well done Eilidh!

Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 5 – w/e 9/11/18

In maths this week, some of us have begun to explore equivalent fractions and others have been looking at division and word problems. We hope that everyone is trying TT Rockstars and enjoying it.

We have looked at Remembrance Day and found out more about the poppy and why we wear it. We have also created our own poppies for a wall display. We wrote acrostic poems linked to this too.

We have begun to read Sky Song, our class novel and to explore the setting of the story. We have begun to write a non chronological report, about the Arctic and the environment found there. The Arctic was the inspiration for Abi Elphinstone when writing this novel.

In PE we have continued with our handball focus and as an extra this week, Primary 7 lead a football session for us, developing our team building and ball handling skills further.

Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 5 w/e 2nd November 2018

This week, as part of our learning about the outdoors, we have been to Linlithgow Loch and spent some time with the Rangers. We were watching the birds using binoculars, we made pictures out of bird seed, played tig and learned about food chains and we learned about the types of food that we should feed the birds and the diseases that incorrect and mouldy food can cause in the birds on our Loch.

In PE with Mrs Reid we have been playing basketball. This week we were practising dribbling the ball.

We’ve looked at the history of Bonfire Night and learned some unusual facts about fireworks. We’ve also discussed the rules surrounding a safe Bonfire Night.

In maths we have been practising our multiplication and we have begun to formally record this in our jotters.

In science, we have been learning about forces and gravity. We have begun to create rockets and are looking forward to launching them soon.

Primary 5 – w/e 26th October 2018

Welcome to Term 2.

We have started the term enthusiastically, with a busy week.

In maths we have explored 2D shapes further, taking our learning outdoors to consolidate the knowledge of this area. Have a look at the photos at the end of our blog to see our learning in action.

We have also explored symmetry, both in 2D shapes and real life too.

In Literacy we have begun to plan a recount of a story, which we will rewrite in our own words.

PE has seen us learning more team building skills through hockey and basketball.

Primary 5 – w/e 12th October 2018

This week we have discovered some of the language used in data handling and used it within our lessons.

We have completed our Indian Elephants and begun to explore how a tartan is created. We will use this in our artwork after the holidays.

In literacy we have continued to explore prefixes and how they change the meaning of a word.

PE has been a continuation of hockey and team building skills, exploring how these skills can be transferred into other sports.

Designing our painted elephants we have  further developed our fine motor skills.

Have a lovely holiday.

Kind regards

Primary 5 w/e 5th October 2018

This week we have enjoyed a wide variety of lessons.

In maths we have looked at addition and at data handling. We have drawn bar graphs that show facts about astronauts and their trips into space. We also looked at the types of questions that bar graphs can answer and created some questions of our own.

In PE we have continued to develop our skills in hockey, developing passing and shooting.

We have logged lots of books for the First Ministers Reading Challenge. Lets keep this up and see if we can be the class who log the most!!!!

Storywriting this week saw our aliens going on an adventure. Our focus was to ensure the story had a clear beginning, middle and end.

Below are some photographs of homework science projects that we have seen in school over the last couple of weeks. Well done to our creative pupils.

Have a lovely weekend

Our Science this week included an investigation into weight. We decided that the variable in our fair test would be the weight of the ball. We are looking forward to exploring this further.

In maths we have been formally recording addition, along with doubling numbers.

In writing we wrote a description of our alien for our alien stories.

In music we have explored some Indian music known as ravi shankar.

In PE, Kieran gave us a taster session for Quidditch and some of us have joined the after school club for this. We also started to look at the skills involved in playing hockey.

Our Assembly this week celebrated Jessie’s retirement and European Day of Languages.

Have a lovely weekend

Primary 5, w/e 21/9/18

A short, busy week this week.

Numeracy has seen some of us explore the strategies we can use to double numbers while others looked at formal methods of recording addition sums.

In Science, we recreated the phases of the moon with oreo biscuits! We also joined a GLOW meet, during which astronaut, Sunita Williams, talked about her career and how engineering was the starting point to becoming an astronaut. She answered questions about her job and about what it was like to be in space.

We have looked at different types of maps and then identified the continents on a map of our own.

We have also begun our Committees today. Some of chose to stay in the same committee, others to explore something new.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Primary 5

Hi,

It was lovely to see you all at Meet the Teacher this week and to share an overview of the year. If you missed this evening, you should have received an overview of some of the activities we will be covering this term.

In Primary 5 this week, we have continued to work on teamwork games in PE, discovering how difficult it can be to complete tasks when working together.

In Literacy, we have looked at comprehension, dictionary skills and completed tasks related to our home learning reading books. We created a setting for our Aliens to have an adventure in in our story writing, thinking about sights, sounds and smells around us.

Numeracy involved looking at rounding numbers. We also took a maths challenge that involved us seeing how many ways a square could be halved. This got us thinking outside the box!!

As an enterprise task, we designed our own Christmas Cards, which will be printed for you to see soon.

Music saw us creating a song and playing instruments.

In science we learned about sundials, and discovered that we have two sundials in our school grounds.

In HWB we had a class discussion around different types of bullying and how a person who is being bullied may feel.

Have a lovely holiday weekend.

Yours

Primary 5 and Mrs Kerr
