Primary 6 Residential Camp at Dalguise.

Primary 6 have recently returned from a fun filled  week at Dalguise. Our week was filled with plenty of fun and adventurous outdoor activities. All children took part in a range of challenging activities, activities such as, zip wiring, abseiling, trapeze, quad biking, raft  building and so, so much more. Everyone took on the challenges and pushed themselves beyond their comfort zones. The week has definitely left everyone with long lasting memories. Special friendship bonds were formed and an outstanding growth in confidence and resilience for all.

P6A Weekly Blog.

The last week of the term has been a very busy, busy week.

Numeracy: This week we consolidated partitioning using brackets. We partitioned addition and multiplication problems. We agreed that partitioning was our preferred strategy especially when calculating mentally.  This week we all received our own timetables practice book. We using the book to help us practice our timetables and to recall them quicker.

Literacy: It has been a busy writing week this week. We spent some time reflecting on what makes Linlithgow beautiful and created some poems which will be entered into the annual Marches Magazine competition which is run by the Round Table. Continuing with our class novel, Edward Tulane we created and wrote postcards of Edward’s journey. Edward has been on different journeys in the book and each journey helps his character to change and develop the feeling of love which he never had before. Writing the post codes lead us to having discussions on how different ‘journeys’ in our own lives have helped us to grow and  develop feelings and different emotions.

PE: It was our last week of tag rugby. We had some fun playing in small teams against each other. The last six weeks of rugby we did not only learn different rugby skills but we have also learnt the importance of communication and working together as a team. This week was also our last week of badminton with Mrs Reid.

RME:  We continued to learn about the Easter story with Mrs Mendes. To consolidate our learning and understanding we created Easter poems based on the Easter story.

1+2:  We have been continuing to learn the Spanish alphabet. We practiced out greetings and feelings dialogue and practiced spelling names using the Spanish alphabet.

P2 Pals: On Wednesday afternoon we spent some time with our P2 Pals and practiced mathematics using sumdog. We’ve enjoyed doing various ICT activities with our P2 Pals and this has been good practice for when we will be P7 Buddies next year, We all completed a buddy application form this week and we can’t wait to find out who our buddy will be next year.

Over the week we have been practicing the Easter songs that we will be singing at the Easter service on Friday, feel free to come along to the service.

Wishing everyone a wonderful and relaxing Easter holiday. We have a lot to look forward to when we get back after the holidays, don’t forget to get the bags backed for our super exciting P6 camp!!

P6’s Cracking Easter

Primary 6 were invited along to Cross House to learn all about the Easter story.  It was a great morning enjoyed by all.  There were a lot of different activities and stories planned to help us learn about the Easter story and how and why Easter is celebrated by Christians.  We had an opportunity to see a replica of the thorn crown that Jesus was made to wear. We took part in a crafts activity and made an Easter card for someone special. We learnt what it was like for Jesus when he offered to wash the feet of others, and it was great fun and lots of giggles when we were washing each others feet. Another new experience was tasting some food from the feast, we all had a try of the ‘bread’ that was made only from water and flour, it was surprisingly delicious. There were so many more fun activities, please ask us to share some of our experiences and stories with you at home.

Springfield Primary’s Euroquiz Team

How much about Europe do you know? Are you able to answer Geography based questions, how about the different European languages can you translate some phrases to English, or are you able to answer European general knowledge questions?

Six Primary 6 learners have been working very hard over the last couple of months learning all the ins and outs of Europe. They have worked so well as a team and really tried hard, even managing to face time each other for a study session – that really showed a lot of commitment.

On Monday, 19th March four of the team members took part in the first heat of the Euroquiz competition. There were 17 other West Lothian schools that took part. The competition was tough, but Mrs Matos could not have been more proud of her team. Their knowledge was put to the test with some very challenging questions. Although we didn’t make it to the finals, all that took part can be very proud of their hard work and commitment.

Well done team!!!

P6A Weekly Blog

Numeracy:  This week we consolidated using the formal written method  for division. Continuing with money, we concentrated on budgeting and we calculated what we could afford. Working with number patterns, we used partitioning using brackets for addition and multiplication.

Literacy: We’ve been getting very creative during literacy this week. We used a picture stimuli to help us to write an imaginative story. In our writing we concentrated on sentence openers and the use of exciting adjectives.  West Lothian’s young writers competition is fast approaching, we spend some time creating some very creative writing pieces. We continued practicing our proof reading and editing skills,  paying attention to the use of the apostrophe and homophone errors.

IDL: This week we took a closer look at the impact the Industrial revolution had on the population, work, living conditions , health and medicine. We compared  this to previous years before the revolution.

RME: With Mrs Mendes we learnt about the Easter story. We have also been practicing our Easter songs that we will be singing at the Easter service on Friday, 23 March at St Michael’s church.

PE: We had another fun filled rugby taster session this week. With Mrs Reid we have been playing some badminton.

1+2:  In Spanish this week, we continued to practice our greetings and feelings vocabulary and we started to learn the Spanish alphabet and have tried to use the Spanish Alphabet to spell each others names. In French we practiced our greetings and learnt the French pronunciations of colours.

What we have to look forward to:

Monday 19 March- P6 Camp information evening at 17:00

Thursday 22 March – Visit to Cross house for Cracking Easter.

Friday 23 March – Easter service at St Michael’s church.

“Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.” – Margaret Mead (P6A)

After returning to school after a few days off due to the bad weather. It was good to be back this week and to continue with our learning.

Numeracy:  We continued to practice division using  the formal written method. Miss Bailie was in our class on Tuesday morning and she was very impressed with what we have been learning, she was even more impressed that we were able to ‘teach’ her the formal written method using our division ‘family’ to help us.  We have been looking at budgets and calculating whether we are able to afford to buy a specific product or not. Budgeting is a life long skill to learn. We have been discussing the importance of budgeting and saving.

Literacy: Our character in our class novel, The miraculous journey of Edward Tulane, is beginning to change, both in appearance as well as personality. A good reader is able to visualise. To show our understanding of how the main character is beginning to change we created a visualisation of Edward. We used adjectives and similes to describe his appearance and personality. We compared the visualisation of Edward that we created at the beginning of the story to the visualisation of the Edward we created this week. Comparing the two has reinforced our understanding of how the character is changing.

IDL:  This week we have started to discuss the impact the Industrial Revolution had on the people, places, health, transport and work. We worked in pairs to spot the difference in two pictures which was an area in England, one picture was taken pre Industrial Revolution and the other was taken in the  1900s. It was very easy  to spot the difference and we were able to share what we had noticed. We continued to dwell further into the impact the Industrial Revolution had. This made for interesting conversation and we were able to draw up a list of pros and cons.

RME: St Michael’s church  had requested that we create a hanging display for their church. As it is soon to be Easter, we created the 14th Station of the Cross- Jesus lay in the tomb. This is a Christian representation of the last moments of Jesus’ ‘human’ life.  Over the Easter period please go along to St Michael’s church to see our lovely silhouette art pieces.

1+2:  Hola! This week we focused on Spanish greetings and feelings vocabulary. We played a variety of different games to help us with remembering the different vocabulary and  pronunciations.

PE: Hockey ball skills was our PE focus this week. A couple of weeks ago Mrs Matos and some teachers attended an afternoon learning skills that can be used for better movers and thinkers. This week, Mrs Matos used some of what she had learnt in our hockey lesson. Not only were we focusing on ball skill and ball control, but we also concentrated on our co-ordination. We found this challenging at times, but we were all very resilient and determined not to give up.

To top this all off, we have had a very busy week taking part in Fairtrade Fortnight. Everyone took part and  dressed ‘wacky’ for dress down day on Friday- Well done to everyone.  What could we get up to next week?

Fairtrade Fortnight

A massive big Thank you and Well done, to all the boys and girls that took part in this years, Fairtrade Fortnight. Although we had a short week last week due to the weather, the boys and girls of Springfield Primary still managed to show their understanding and commitment to the cause.

Over the last two weeks, the children have been taking part in designing their own Fairtrade football. The Fairtrade football design was part of the Linlithgow Cluster schools Fairtrade competition. Each class chose their top three designs and after some very difficult judging we had our overall three winners, who will be attending the Linlithgow Fairtrade event tonight at Linlithgow Primary School. Well done to everybody, it was not a very easy task on having to choose the best ones as we had so many amazing and creative designs. But a big congratulations to all the winners per class, and a massive well done to our final top three.

To help us understand more about Fairtrade, on Thursday afternoon, Miss Baillie held a special Fairtrade assembly. The assembly helped us to understand the importance of buying Fairtrade products and how this ensures that farmers are being treated fairly.

Over the last two weeks, we have been encouraging the children to bring in a Fairtrade snack. Our Primary 6 children have been calculating each day how many Fairtrade snacks have been brought into school. We have two winning classes. Well done to P1A who had brought in a total of 64 fairtrade snacks and P5B who had brought in a total of 75 fairtrade snacks over the last two weeks.

To top off our Fairtrade Fortnight awareness, things went bananas on Friday. Everyone brought in a £1 to dress up as something wacky. Thank you to everyone who took part, the school sure had some very interesting and wacky dress ups. With all the £1 coins that were collected we raised a total of £174 which we will hand over to the Fairtarde charity organisation in the UK.

Thank you again to all the children, parents and staff, that supported Fairtrade Fortnight. You helped raise awareness and with your support in buying Fairtrade products and donating a £1 to dress down, you are helping ensure that a farmer is being treated fairly.

Rights Respecting Committee

Today the Rights Respecting committee came together , we watched a children’s rights video and learnt and sang along to the children’s right song.

We worked together in groups and created our own idea of a ‘perfect’ citizen. We listed what  makes a good citizen and we also recapped on our rights and responsibilities. Each group had an opportunity to share their ideas and thoughts  with the rest of the committee members.

Please remember : ‘ Kids deserve to be happy, healthy and Safe.’ – Author Unknown.

A short but eventful learning week in P6A

Due to the snowy weather and school closure, we had a very short week. Never the less we had managed to do some fun and exciting learning over the Monday and Tuesday.

Fairtrade Fortnight: Fairtrade Fortnight started on 26th February and will continue until the 11th March 2018. Primary 6 have been busy making information  posters about our Fairtrade Fortnight activities. We have been encouraging the boys and girls in school to bring in a Fairtrade snack over the next two weeks, we have also been going around to all the classes and explaining what is Fairtrade and why it is a good idea to buy Fairtrade products. As part of the Linlithgow schools cluster, we have been designing a Fairtrade football, three winners will be chosen from each class and then a final three will be entered into the Linlithgow school cluster Fairtrade competition.  With this snowy weather it is a great opportunity to use some Fairtrade products to make something nice to eat, such as using Fairtrade bananas to make banana muffins, or even just snuggle up with a good book and drink a warm Fairtrade hot chocolate.

Numercay: We have been focusing on division this week. We are encouraged to use a variety of different strategies, and to use a strategy that we feel confident with and that is efficient. But it is also good to know the formal written methods too. This week we worked on division using the formal written method, ask us to explain the ‘division family’ to you at home. Next week we will use our division knowledge and continue with money.

IDL: We have finished painting our still life pictures. We used all the techniques that the Scottish Colourist would have used in their paintings. Please have a look out for our still life paintings when you come along to parent’s evening.

PE: Who says that the bad weather can keep us from learning some rugby skills. This week we embraced the cold and learnt some more tag rugby skills in the snow. With a lot of slipping and sliding we had a lot of fun, and continue to develop our tag rugby skills.

Expressive arts: We had a very successful Lion King rehearsal at the Linlithgow Academy on Monday. It was our first time practicing on the stage, it was all very overwhelming, but Mrs Matos, Mrs Gordon, Mrs Hogg and Mr Logan, we very impressed with how well we have developed, and although we are missing out on more rehearsal time due to school closures, they have no doubt that we are still going to put on a show of a lifetime. A big thank you to the parent helpers who walked with us to and from Linlithgow Academy!

P6 Euroquiz Competition

I am sure that all the children are loving these snow days, but I am sure I know 6 children who may be disappointed. Unfortunately due to the weather the first heat of Euroquiz which was scheduled for Friday, 2nd March has been cancelled. I know that those involved have dedicated a lot of time to preparing for the quiz, but look at this as an opportunity for additional preparations.  I will update the team of when the first heats have been rescheduled for.

In the meantime, over the next few days while you are at home continue with your preparations.  Always better to be over prepared than to be not prepared at all.

Here is a link that you can follow to help you to prepare. Try some of previous quizzes, this will give you some idea of what the questions may be like. http://www.seet.org.uk/resources/euroquiz-resources.php

Remember to take a break from your preparations and enjoy sometime out in the snow.  Stay warm!
